I once stayed with a friend for a week who played WoW. I got off work and went over around 11, called prior to arriving to let him know I was on the way, he said he would unlock the door for me. I get there and the door is locked so I knock. He calls me and says he will open the door in a couple minutes... he has a raid he just started and couldn't take 5 seconds to open the door for me.

ooooo...according to my friend, those raids can and do get pretty intense.

I still play WOW on occasion. Don't raid much anymore, cause I don't have 4-5 hours to spend at the computer at a time, but I still enjoy it as a hobby. Some people do get very addicted and I know of people who have lost everything because they wouldnt go to work or anything else. Some people are just ... well I don't know what the word is.

My wife's little brother calls it "WOW, The Life Ender." He has lots of stories about straight-A students flunking all of their classes when they are introduced to the game. :lol

I doubt it... or they haven't been playing for very long. Playing WoW for as long as I did, in my eyes, it would be like HTC taking AH and tweaking the lethality of cannon rounds and flight models/performances on every plane at least five times every year, typicaly nerfing each unfavorabley multiple times, until the popularity of whichever vehicle/plane they were tweaking was so low that they decided to buff it... but nowhere near as good as it was when they first started nurfing it, but still most players (especialy those who had no memory of how the plane/vehicle originaly was) would flock to use it and scream to the gods that it's so "ZOMG woopass".
Do me a favor, take them to an airshow, then buy them a couple joysticks. Show them FSOs (if they want to be a part of a squad or "guild" as WoWers say), the Scenarios (tell them our 300+ man raids beat their 10-25 man raids, nevermind the oldschool 40-man raids in WoW), our dueling arena is so much more enjoyable (because you only loose a little pride if you loose) and it's more instant-action than WoW's arenas, and finaly our online arenas (look ma, no gold farmers!... (people trying to con you outa real-life money for virtual resources/money because you dont have the days upon days to devote to grinding them the way you'ra supposed to)).
And because of the grind involved and time devotion needed to get anywhere noteworthy in the game, it is a huge social-life ender to those who enjoy the game and want to get to the woopass content and gear (to improve your character and make it woopass). I was in a lot of high-end no-BS guilds when I played, and we played hard four nights a week, and the other three nights a week we all were off the computer and socializing with this great thing we all liked to call the real world.

I looked at a person playing it at my old school on his laptop. His orc ( I think?) was clad in some sort of leather thong/strap and was wearing a cape with strange colors and decorations on it. The orc was shooting glowing blue orbs (I think they call those spells? I don't really know, as I got away from the MMORPG when I got tired of RumbleFighter and Trickster Online.) at some sort of monster that looked like it was supposed to be a turtle that breathed fire, though it looked more like a tree stump that spat flames instead. Then I looked at his laptop and saw it was one of those thousand-dollar laptops with the widescreen HD monitor, as well as a special keypad and keyboard for his addiction. Then I saw his face, fairly pimply, with the zoned out look that generally comes to people who play those games. When he died from the turtle-stump, you could see that he was a conflicted stew of emotions; his eyes were almost tearing up and his teeth were grinding, though he didn't make a fuss as we were in the library. Now, I knew him from the previous years as well, so I can vouch that he had put on weight from when I first met him. Before, he had the lean grade-schooler-entering-middle-school look, but now his arms were fairly flabby, and you could see from his shirt that he created some stomach folds when sitting in a slouched position. Before his orc died, I had asked him what he was playing and said one word, "WoW."
Poor bugger.
He was a nice kid and all, but he needed an intervention, or WoWaholics Anonymous, or something. World of Warcraft was all he really was interested in talking about. So yes, World of Warcraft is an addiction not seen since Everquest II.

WoW is just a seriously messed up game! You have to put in so much effort into it!

People obsess over all kinda things.
Sustained turning radius of <insert any plane type> vs sustained turning radius of <insert any other plane type> f'rinstance.
I enjoy the small unit tactics - mix of capabilities - sense of humor Blizz has - people you run across.
As in any game with social interaction .. people can make or break the game.. greifers are everywhere in any online game.
Atm I spend a lot of hours in WoW .. I also spend a lot of hours in 3dMax .. among other things.
When I have a bad day .. nothin mellows me out more than goin out and depopulating a section of a zone, for laffs,
with whatever character I choose to use.
Not much matches a good 5-man team dismantling a tough dungeon.
There are no half hour climbouts, half hour searches just to find a target who isnt 20k above you with his dweeb pals
who think they are 'good' because 8 of them can shoot down a single plane.. if they really work at it.
go team -yawn-
