It's often remarkable how little has changed since the war. It's also rather poignant to think of the events that happened in these quiet villages.
You may or may not be aware of it but there's a magazine series called 'After the Battle'which specialises in articles comparing battles then and now. They also publish books, one deals with Normandy. They have a website. http://www.afterthebattle.com/ab-con1.html#spec
I find it fascinating and a must buy.

You see the pic of the seawall near the end? There's a plane on the beach.

Dad went ashore on D+3, forward radio observer, patton's 3rd.
He went back for a Normandy reunion a couple years before he passed away.
He said the Sherman he saw buried in a ditch was still there .. the crew never got out, they just put a bridge over it and kept going.
The bridge is stone now, instead of planking ..he said you can see the top of the turret now because the water has eroded the muck away from when the tank originally sank.
He had a few stories .. very rare to get him to talk, he was tip of the spear and lost a lot of friends.
Was up close and personal in a small french town ..screamin along to setup an OP, rounded a corner and
..the jeep slammed right into the back of a Tiger that was backin up.
Driver bailed his side, dad bailed out his side,
They beat feet, dad said that jeep wasnt more than 2 inches high when he saw it awhile later.
He hooked up with the driver and his unit about 3 months later
.. seems they were behind the lines aways and it took awhile to get 'back'
.. sheesh.
