Thanks for sharing. I was stationed near Schweinfurt during my time in Germany. In fact, the kaserne I was on was an old Luftwaffe airfield. There were several in the immediate area for the protection of Schweinfurt and Wuerzburg. Both towns were decimated during the war except for a castle in Wuerzburg. The museum there (in the castle) says it was because the castle was a navigation point for the bombers, so they avoided bombing it. Always interesting stuff to be learned in the most unlikely places.

I live about 10 minutes from the old Detling airfield where they landed after the raid 10/20/43. Its been the Kent county showground for years, but there are still a few pill boxes around the old aerodrome. Nice to connect with some history. Good read.

Thanks for sharing. I have 2 set of flight logs from WWII. One, from my late grandfather. He was a B24D pilot in the south PTO. He was very much a part of the Bougainville campaign, most of his missions were up and down the slot. A then Cpt Darrell "Bud" Gray had 32 missions under his belt when he was rotated home in early 1945. The second set is from my great uncle, a brother to my grandmother. He died in FL while testing new engines in B24's in early 1944. Cpt Ralph Oliver Brown had 28 bombing missions under his belt from the MTO.
Amazing stuff. I dont think any of us today can really comprehend what those fellas went through.
Thanks for sharing that. Lots of good stuff.
