Title: Sunblock IDEA Stolen from Cutthroat Squaddie.......Trapp
Post by: K-KEN on September 12, 2009, 02:37:51 PM
A command or some such to raise a "hand" and arm to block the sun. (edit: Maybe Shift H)  :D
Trapp has been bringing this up for 6 months or more on squad nights so I figured I'd post it and give him all the credit!  :x   He has had trouble getting into our newsgroups and not sure why he isn't here.

We have all thought it was an excellent idea.
Programing code issues etc. .. for sure.
It would give us a block for the sun that would not be transparent. It would block everything including other planes, mountains etc.

Well,

Really, not a that crazy idea... But what arm/hand would be raised? Right or left? Because if you raise one arm, you'll have to hold the stick with the other. You would be unable to use the throttle, for instance... How would you decide what would be unreacheable or not operable? This may get complicated...

Couldn't this be fixed by wearing some fine sunglasses? :D

Cheers,

This is a really neat imaginative idea that would be would cool if it could be done, but...

Can you imagine how difficult it would be to code?  Where to you put the hand each time?  Would the hand move to stay in front of the sun as you maneuvered your plane, or would it be in a static position?  How could you throw the hand up in a different position each time based on where the sun is in relation to your view?

Seems to me it would be very challenging to implement, (would it?) and in the end, it would be a great deal of effort for a very minor change in the AH game overall.

still thinking...  I suppose, you would always know the position of the sun, and the position of the head.  The hand could be distance X from the head on a vector from the head to the sun.  That would keep it in the right position while you maneuvered around...  Well, that would be a little better than RL, now, wouldn't it?

Maybe instead of a hand, you could just put on your sunglasses with a toggle.

Ahh, Just enjoy the sun glare.

Well they could code all that, OOOORRrrrrrr....just change arena settings so it's not always 8 am or 4 pm.......it's NEVER @#%@#%%@#ing noon

While holding both buttons down on the mouse use it to position your hand.  If you release the buttons it will be assumed you've returned your hand to the controls and the sunblocking hand will disappear.

If i remember correctly pilolts in ww2 used one thumb to block the sun this option in ah would be great.

I have four little arrows on my keyboard that allows me to move my head position, if I so desire, so that the canopy framing blocks the sun.

Try it.

YMMV

To reiterate,
This is not my idea. I certainly support it as a great one. Trapp has been slack getting into the AHBB.
To make it simple, it would actually just follow the sun. I guess all the right and left handed folks are going to have an argument. If the sun is on the left, left hand, and if on right - right hand. We currently have a pilot in the cockpit for external views so an appendage may be in order..  :lol

A hand, a thumb...either works. True on the thumb during WWII.

Well, if you hang out long enough, the sun travels east to west, there is a sunrise (dawn) and brief sunset (dusk) that is also involved. The sun and moon switch places. There also is a high Noon as well.

As I can tell, it jumps from mid-angle in the east directly to mid-angle in the west, without stopping at good ol noon

I might need to hang out more.   :O  I thought there was an accelerated time setting, but it went dawn to dusk and everything in between. I could be incorrect.

I use it all the time. This is just another way to instanly block it...maybe.... momentarily or as needed.

I'd like to see more accurate optical properties for sun glare before the addition of a hand to block the sun.

:huh dude the FAA keeps calling me to turn the screen off, because its blinding the commercial traffic over my house,   how more accurate you want it.

I believe his point is that the sun doesn't shine flawlessly through a pane of glass and, this is the big one, aircraft did not have house-window perfect glass in their cockpits. Even adding in the diffusion effect of scratches would help. I believe the optical effect of a curved piece of glass for the bubble cockpits would go even farther.

He said "more accurate," not "stronger." :)

I like to see it more like a shaded function like putting sun glasses on, which the pilot had in the war.

Hah!
Thanks KKEN.
You beat me.

I agree with much of what has been posted... except for the fat guy with no arms. I don't think it be be a toggle that stays on or off (arm/thumb up or down) and has to track the sun, rather a hotkey that could bring it up for an instant while you hold it down. Controls for that hand would be inoperable (left hand no throttle controll, right hand no guns or something like that) while the hand was in use. I thought about the visor, but not sure too many WWII era pilots had them.

Glad you like it semp.
