Post by: Jag34 on September 14, 2009, 03:25:50 PM
I'm not sure if this has been shown yet. But found this video of 3 of the only 5 F7F TigerCat at one place at the same time. Enjoy

actually Big Bossman is the best of the lot but has been sold with the remaining of Mike Browns planes to the owner of Rare Bear.

What do you base your opinion on, a shiny coat of paint?

No other F7 owners comments. He also had the deepest pockets of any of them and his was also the fastest of the bunch that showed up at the Reno Air Races. I,ve been attending for 15 years and if you saw Big Bossman up close you would see that everything is perfect on the plane not just the paint job. The owner of Rare bear also owns Glacier Girl and a F4U named Marine's Dream that was rebuilt by the guys at Chino, Fighter Re-builders. Steve Hinton said he's never seen a F4U restored to the quality that Marine's Dream was. Now there are other Marine's Dreams around that are not the plane I am talking about. So you can understand the quality that this guy demands when purchasing a plane you would realize he also thinks it's the best F7F out there.

I know the aircraft well.  I also know who bought it and Glacier Girl.

Just an fyi, it is an old firebomber that was stripped to make it fast.  That does not make it one of the best.  As for being complete, it is far from it, and being that there are several others that are around that are far more complete and representative of an F7F.  Is Big Bossman nice?  Yes, of course it is.  Is it the best, if you want a racer, than that is what you are looking for, if you want authentic representations of the aircraft, than there are other far more accurate aircraft out there.

Which ones cause theres only about 4 flying. It is the best maintained of the ones that I have seen. Authentic, well not may WW2 planes are. Most are lacking in some form or another. I personally dont know what is missing that is different from the other single seat versions but Rod Lewis who now owns Big Bossman also owns another F7F that I believe came from a museum in Michigan. I'll ask him next year at the Reno Air Races what he thinks is the best of the bunch.

Bigplay,
There are plenty of aircraft approaching stock configurations.  That seemed to be the market direction after years of stripping them down to save on gas and race at Reno.  There will always be the Reno racers, but those are not going to be the market direction any longer.  Spending $3-4 million to win $100k is not a money making proposition and the true bragging rights are in aircraft that are truly gems like the FHC collection and aircraft that are original.  In case you do not believe me, ask Mr. Lewis next year why he spent so much on GG.

The truly unique aircraft out there though are those that are on their way to coming on line now.  Many are hidden in secrecy because the rumor mills are just so bad with any small amount of facts released that the owners of these aircraft just choose not to release any and save on headaches.  In the next five year period, the amount of truly authentic restorations flying will likely double and possibly triple.  Those are going to be the amazing aircraft out there.

Not sure and I would rather not ask as it is not my business.  In all likelihood it is market driven.  Same for several other big names shedding assets.

From my understanding everything he owns is up for sale including his house. Not sure why but my thinking is he's tired of all it and wants to retire from everything. What I was told at the Reno air races is that the year before last when he was defending his title the judges let Strega fly inside of him to win the race. My understanding is that is against the rules and when they let that happen he was officially done with Reno. If you want to retire and don't need a business to support your aircraft . Then you can sell your business and move, Hawaii is where I was told he was moving.

I've heard a lot of rumors.  Not sure what to believe.  It's not my business, so I stay out of it.  Hell the entire warbird industry generates more enthusiast based rumors than any other industry I have ever experienced.

I got that info off a blog about Brown. His wife posted that they wanted to retire and move to Hawaii . The people that I know in the race community that know Mike said that he was pissed at RARA about the Strega issue. Now if that's a rumor it came from the best sources that I know.
