Title: Drink Beer! Not Water!
Post by: 1pLUs44 on September 14, 2009, 10:52:15 PM
My dad sent me an email, went like this: (Funny)

In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria. In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop. However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting. Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of sh!&. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service

Yeah, but I've never downed a case of water and then proceeded to chase a penguin around the yard in a golfcart! :x

I strongly disagree with the notion to lose all judgement, dehydrate myself, then start a city riot.

Yes, I know it was a joke.

He's getting real grumpy. I ask that they should at least put a light or darker shade for the water by the sand and he gets ticked. You come with a joke and he takes it seriously.

Den, relax man.

Seems you've had a rough day? Sit down, relax. Drink a beer watch some bugs bunny.  :D

Buy one of them fancy beer machines. ;)

As a Luftwaffle, I strongly support beer.

The more beer you drink, the more money we have for BMW engines for our 190s :devil.

Hmmmm...a little misinformation in that.

Neither wine nor beer have to go through a heat distillation process and both require some amount of water to produce varying levels of alcohol content. Distilled liquors (tequila, rum, whiskey, vodka) do use a heat distillation process. The only way E.Coli would not affect beer or wine is the alcohol content which does minimize the harmful bacteria.

I'd say vodka. Vodka goes through multiple distillation processes to produce a finer grade of alcohol, the more times it's distilled the better.

As far a public safety goes, wine would be safer. Even better would be a sweet red wine (good for your heart) add fruit juices to it and make sangria...lower alcohol content and you can drink more. Lower risk of dehydration and abnormal behavior when large quantities are consumed.

There's some merit to this, however. A number of ancient cultures drank beer rather than water because of water-borne diseases (specifically cholera. The Egyptians particularly come to mind in this regard). I BELIEVE that may have been the origin of beer in the first place, as a means of finding a safe source of drinking water.

Wow, someone found an ACTUAL use for a mac?

I thought the origins of beer came from some Mesopotamian culture in the form of an ale. The Egyptians were known for a variety of wines and beer.

Not quite right. I don't know about wines as I have never made wine, but beer does go through a "heat" process... the wort (pronounced wert) is boiled whether it is made from powdered or syrup malt extract or all grain, hops are added, and then goes through a chiller, then mixed with water and a yeast starter in the primary fermenter. Alcohol content is not 'controled' per se by mixing it with water, but more so by the sugar content of the wort and the yeast's consumption of that sugar, producing alcohol and CO2 as byproducts. The actual alcohol content is controled by the brewer as he can stop the yeast's production of alcohol once it has reached a certain specific gravity. In high alcohol (high specific gravity) brews, the yeast might actually go dormant as the alcohol content has gotten high enough that it (yeast) cannot continue to process the sugars.

If made from all-grain the entire wort is boiled and many extract brewers boil their top off water when not doing a full boil.  But that is to prevent any bacteria from getting into the fermenter that is harmful to the beer.  No known harmful pathogen can exist in fully fermented beer. From a combination of the alcohol, the enzymes and the hops beer can not "go bad".  It may end up being really crappy tasting but other than that can't hurt ya.

Beer is the reason man was driven to agriculture, thereby making it the motivator for all civilization.  Not that I'm sure that's a good thing or not.   :D

You are all getting far too technical...A simple test will sort this out easily.

Take 2 litres of water, 2 liters of beer and 2 liters wine

Obviously the beer and wine parts of this will need to be carried on separate occasions so as not to interfere with the test results. All liquids must be consumed within a designated time frame, for this test time is 1 hr

My Hypothesis on this test are as follows

2 liters of water      still thinking about the feces you may have just consumed, along with the trivial day to
day problems that plague us  (what's for dinner, damn I feel sick after all that water  etc etc)
2 liters of beer        still thinking...more about the fact that more beer is needed as I now have the taste  for
more...that food would be nice but not really necessary..and wow that chick is looking
                       mighty fine etc etc
2 liters of wine         still thinking....yeah right you are   hahaha

Neither does a night of Beer. Takillya, and flaming shots of  Sambuca  followed by cheesecake.

Tastes great going down. An hour later....Not so much.

Micro-organisms in Beer (http://www.beer-brewing.com/beer-brewing/beer_chapters/ch19_beer_spoilage_organisms.htm)

Yes I am absolutely sure about that.  The micro-organisms that is referring to is harmful to the beer effecting taste, carbonization, etc.. not organisms that are harmful to the human drinking it.  Although you may wish once you taste it that you didn't drink it.
