Found this photo of a P38 that is supposed to be WWII era colour photograph guessing by the markings it is a 8TH FG aircraft not sure what model it is & also interesting that it is OD brown. Anyways I figured some one would know more about it.

Been asking the same question for a while now. It's a J model and there is only one restored J flying and it only flew in 80th markings as Porky II.
It appears to be Allen Hill's "Hill's Angel" the OD J model he flew with the 80th. It appears to have armor plate and the radio sets in the right places too for a wartime shot. None of the restored 38s fly with armor plate installed and again it's a J model while most flying are L models with the landing light in the leading edge of the left wing.
I'd love some background on that image as well as seeing it in a larger size

IMHO the quality looks too good to be a WWII era photograph, but I'm no expert..

There are always exceptions as for example. It looks as if it was taken yesterday.

Wondered the same thing my self. Marker buoy? life raft for downed pilot? A Mae West?

Those must be fake, we all know the world and WW2 were black and white in 1940's. I've seen in in TV!
But seriously, great pictures :aok. The color photos from WW2 are rare, but they surely kinda blow one's mind, dont they.
A couple of years back a book with Finnish wartime color photos was published. It was a must to buy :)

You know what the actor Bruce Spence has had a very long career playing this role in Mad Max II. :devil

Check out the website Shorpy.com for old photos, many in color.
Here are a few (LARGE & HIGH DEF!) color aircraft pics. Most are B25s, but there are a few ponies too!
Enjoy!

Found some more info. The profiles look just plain old olive drab instead of brown. Also shame they did not show the profile of the other side of his plane.

Shortly after that picture was taken, the two rearmost P-51s collided and I think one if not both pilots were killed.
-
I think the original photo is a plastic model.
