I swear people are so whiny about these things it is unreal. When I played football we were very fortunate to have a very good team in high school (2 state championships in 3 years) and played on some good ones in college. With that said we did loose a game in college 72-0 to Kansas. Sometimes teams just give up a bunch of points and sometimes they score without actually trying. I remember when I was a backup player in high school and we got into the game we would do our best to score even when we were facing the starters from the other teams. Many times we scored 40 plus on teams and only gave up a field goal or a single touchdown.

Apparently in Florida it is a huge deal to not beat up on someone that bad these days.

Nearly a third of those came from turnovers and a blocked punt. Most of the starters were out by halftime and only 1 pass was thrown in second half.
Sounds like the winning coach did everything but tell his guys to take a few plays off.

Sounds like the other coach didn't do a very good job of coaching his team...fire him!
But in a high school landscape increasingly aware of sportsmanship issues - one where quick harsh judgments are made based solely on a score
Sportsmanship? You get your butt kicked...you suck it up and practice til you got it right. I played football in high school, we had a team that had beaten us every time we played them down by 32 -0 in the second quarter...ended up losing by 3 points because the coach didn't want to appear to be "unsportsman like". I was the starting varsity defensive tackle as a sophmore...last season I played. Who wants to work that hard just to be told you can't play to win?

They put a mercy rule in up here in CT couple years ago. Was first being used my junior year of high school.
2 inner city high schools in Hartford were playing one is a very good team that produces number of D1 players every year and the other is a below average team.
It was the game between the 2 in my sophomore year where that 1 school produced 8 D1 players 5 of them D1-A. Their varsity team put up 45 in the 1st quarter. They put their JV team in for the rest of the game which scored another 45. The final score of the game was 90-0.
There were numerous complaints and the mercy rule was put in that you cant score more than 50 points above your opponent. If you are 50 points ahead you have to punt the ball back to the other team. If you score more than 50 even just 1 point over the head coach is suspended for 1 or 2 games, I forget which.
If your team is that bad, Im sorry there shouldnt be a mercy rule. Play the game out should encourage these kids to get better.

My senior year in high school (in a 1-A high school in Texas), we won our homecoming game 77-0 and even the preacher gave us props at the Sunday morning sevice. :lol

There is a local high school here called Everman that is really, really good , One of there games they won by like 60+ points and they were catching some flak for it.
After halftime the coach said he played all 70+ players , let them play any postion and call all the plays , He couldn't help it if they still scored. :lol

If you suck, and don't try at all, you will get destroyed by anyone who tries, or just doesn't suck as much. Rather than an embarrassment, this game should be a valuable life lesson.

The weak minded these days love to award mediocrity and lazyness.
That mercy rule is ignorant. Why don't they just stop the game at that point and award it to the high scoring team.

yep all these mercy rules do is encourage laziness and dependance that will last throughout their lives...... next thing you know the govt will want to place a mercy rule for people too lazy to work and support their families......... oh wait
