Just saw this article today:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/6197169/JRR-Tolkien-trained-as-British-spy.html
J.R.R. Tolkien, arguably the father of modern fantasy, had been among the recruits trained for the Bletchley Park team of linguists that ultimately cracked the Enigma code. Ultimately he turned down an appointment to the team for unknown reasons, but still was a supporter of the war effort and retained an interest in doing more to help. Tolkien had a very vocal dislike for Hitler during the war, particularly the Nazi appropriation and corruption of the Germanic Mythology Tolkien loved and specialized in, and ultimately formed a part of the background for much of his Middle-earth mythology.

Cool and interesting.
The historian joked: ''We simply don't know why he didn't join. Perhaps it was because we declared war on Germany and not Mordor.''
:rofl

That is a crazy good story about that.
