For all you guys out there who think that Nintendo is nothing but a bunch of kiddie, family-friendly titles, get a load of this:

Taking one of their darker franchises in an even more hard-core direction. Although DAMN I hate that so many video games out there now look like CGI Anime. I am NOT a fan of that sort of character design.

No I am a great fan of comic books but I love the Marvel style of drawing. Manga and Anime just puts me off. I cant watch or read it, its rubbish.
-
I don't know how you could make CGI look any different without making people look absolutely disgusting.
-
True, but couldn't they at least pick a better character design than freakin' Anime?
-
Like I said...what other character design? I mean, I do have a very narrow scope of CGI, so it's an honest question. That's the only style I've ever seen.
-
its the most realistic looking style............ all other styles come off looking like a bad SouthPark
-
If any one can pull it off its Team Ninja....
Graphics in Ninja Gaiden look way better .... Myabe Nintendo does not have the hadware to do any better.

Although older, I think this is MUCH more realistic that the pointy-chinned, spikey-haired, big-eyed character design prevalent in so many games now:

Compare to this, who looks like she was lifted right from a Final Fantasy game:

This guy doesn't look TOO bad, but military uniforms in this design style ALWAYS end up looking like they belong in a freakin' marching band:

Samus herself isn't so bad either. At least they got rid of her goofy Anime hair from Prime 2 and 3 and went back to the ponytail:

Can't believe I didn't think of GTAIV. In that case, I certainly agree...but, at the same time, they're Japanese companies...

"Samus herself isn't so bad either"
I'd hit it :D

To be fair, the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie had perfect character modeling IMO: (http://www.andrewzeller.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/realisticphotos.jpg)

Yes, but a movie doesn't have to be dynamically rendered.
That is real purdy though. :D
-
How about cut-scenes then? ;)

In case you didn't notice, the Final Fantasy games are Japanese and therefore have a very Japanese look to their characters. Its a trademark of all Square Enix games and also of other Japanese game developers. There is also no disputing it, Square Enix creates some of the best CGI work in the industry. Just look at some of our CGI movies that we've made (Final Fantasy - Spirit Within, Final Fantasy - Advent Children) and you can clearly see that.

Unfortunately, a couple of 'hard-core' games that have been released or currently in development will not change the fact that the Wii is a family centric console system with the majority of the games reflecting that and being developed with that in mind. Metroid will sell well because of the history of the franchise but its not going to be a game that drives people to buy the Wii.
