It's time to sign up for BaldEagl's SECOND TRI-ANNUAL ACES HIGH II ONE-ON-ONE BRACKET CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT.
If you're in state so clearly and list your in-game handle even if it's the same as your BBs name.
If you don't know what it's about (I'm not sure how you could have missed it) the inagural tournament thread is here: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,269285.0.html. BTW, I posted the final bracket for posterity. Congrats to moot on winning the inaugural tournament and to batfinkV as runner-up.
Signup will run for two weeks. You have until midnight central time Sunday, October 4 to get involved. This should allow us to conclude the tournament before the holiday season arrives (sorry international guys... I have to consider Thanksgiving here in the U.S. as the official start to the holiday season).
Once again I encourage players of all skill levels to get involved. Since initial match-ups are by random draw you never know who or what you're going to get. Plus... "on any given Sunday..." If you do match up against someone better than you you might even get a chance to have them teach you a few tricks after the official duels. Well anyway, the best way to get better is to try so don't let skill level keep you from meeting new friends and having some fun at the same time.
The rules remain the same (posted below) with one exception. I have included a requirement that the winner of the duel series post films for the communities enjoyment from the quarter-final round forward. Of course posting films during earlier rounds is encouraged as long as both participants agree.
One last bit of business. I will give the inaugural tournament review committee the first option of remaining on the committee for this tournament. If I haven't heard from them in a week I will seek substitute volunteers (it's an easy gig ;)).
So, here's the rules:
- Brackets will be determined by random draw of names out of a hat (or other convenient container ).
- If there are odd numbers of players I will work them into the brackets although they may have to fly more or less rounds than other players. They will be those chosen randomly.
- Duels must be arranged between the players by PM, IM, e-mail or other means to take place by midnight CDT Sunday following each bracket update (6 days).
- Duels will be best of three.
- First duel plane selection will be assigned using a random number generator to select from all availble fighter and fighter/attack aircraft (except the Me163 and Me262). This will be done individually for each set of duelers.
- The loser of each duel selects the aircraft for the next duel. This allows the loser to pick his/her best aircraft to get back into contention and if it goes three rounds each player will have had one plane selection.
- All duels will take place in the DA canyon area.
- All duels will be 25% fuel loadout with players choice of gun package and convergence.
- All merges will be guns cold (no firing until you have passed your opponent's 3/9 line).
- All merges will be co-alt at 10K until within icon range at which point a merge break can begin. In addition all players shall observe a 10K cieling at all times prior to the merge.
- Anything goes after the initial merge.
- In the case of a draw (both run out of fuel for instance) that duel will be re-fought using the same aircraft.
- In the case of a collision:
* If only one player collides (only one gets the collision message) the duel continues.
* If both players collide (both get the collision message) the duel immediately ends and will be re-started in the same planes.
- Intentionally ditching or bailing constitutes forfieture of the duel.
- The intent is for players to remain in close proximity to one another (2-3K max). That said if at any time the players lose icon range on one another the duel ends immediately and will be re-started using the same planes. This should allow a dueler to simply turn away from a runner to nullify the duel.
- If an uninvited third party interrupts the duel the duel is immediately ended and will be re-started using the same plane. The dueling participants may move to another mutually agreed upon set of fields in the DA in this instance.
- Once one player has been shot down and the other recieves a kill message the duel ends. There is no need to land.
- If a player disco's the duel will be re-fought in the same planes as soon as the discoing player re-logs. If he does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he will lose the duel series by default. A second and any subsequent discos by the same player in a duel series will result in a loss of the duel in which the player disco'd.
- Both players will film all duels in case of a dispute.
- Films must be posted by the winning player for all duels from the quarter final round forward for the viewing pleasure of the community. Films may be posted during earlier rounds if both participants agree.
- The losing player will post in this thread after the duel series in the following format:
Plane - Winner
Plane - Winner
Plane - Winner (if needed)
The loser posting is a means to verify that the results are uncontested. If the loser hasn't posted by the deadline then the winner may post the results but they will be deemed contested.
- This information must be posted by no later than 12:00 midnight Central Daylight Time Sunday following the posting of the updated bracket so that I can get the brackets updated and re-posted on Monday.
- If a player does not show within 15 minutes of the arranged time they forfiet the series. In that case the winner by default must post a screenshot of the DA roster showing that the opponent is a no show no later than 12:00 midnight CDT Sunday following posting of the updated bracket.
- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in this thread prior to the posting deadline. If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance. If it is unclear which player is at fault, or if neither player posts, then a random draw will determine which player advances.
- In the case of contested results both players films will be reviewed by the review committee and a determination will be posted no later than 48 hours after the initial posting deadline. The review committee may overturn posted results. If a clean determination of a winner cannot be made a winner will be selected by random draw. The review committee's determination will be final. Because this will delay both the winner's and his/her next opponent's ability to arrange their next duel it is in the best interest of everyone that the players reach an agreeable conclusion to their duels on their own. In any case, then next duels deadlines WILL NOT be delayed.
- The initial bracket will be posted on Monday, October 5 and each Monday thereafter until a winner has been determined.
And here's what the open bracket looked like last time:

Just one question; If he's not on the BBs how will people reach him to arrange their duels?
BTW, if anyone was, don't worry about numbers. Expanding thte bracket from 64 to 128 players only adds one week to the proceedings and an additional week each time the numbers double thereafter. Judging by the first two days response it's looking like we could get to 128 participants.
Thanks to eveyone who's signed up so far. I'm glad to see the positive response to this event.

I'm very encouraged by the (almost) first week sign-ups. We currently have 67 competitors signed up with one maybe (jerkins) and just over a week to go.
If the tourney started tomorrow there would only be 3-4 duel series in the first week of a four elimination round 128 man bracket with 60-61 players taking a first week bye. That's ok but I'm sure we'll see more sign-ups over the next week. There's plenty of room for more. Join the fun. The sign-up period ends at midnight central Sunday, October 4.
Three of the four review committee members have agreed to stay on for this tournament. I haven't heard from Vudak. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow I will be seeking a review committee alternate in case one of the regular members is not available for some reason.
I wasn't sure if I'd sign up myself as I've barely played in the past month and have been awful when I have. I decided to give it a go anyway so someone will have an easy first round. ;)
Here's the roster so far (sorted by in-game name). Please make sure I got your BBs and in-game names right and that I didn't miss anyone. (BTW, bat... I need your friends BBs name).

Just a little.

I don't think 128 players is going to be realistic but it would be nice to hit 96 conestants. That way half the first round brackets would be filled giving 2/3 of the participants a first round duel and 1/3 a first round bye. 85-86 players would give 1/2 a duel and 1/2 a bye with 1/3 of the first round brackets filled. I'd hope we could at least get there in the next week. That's only another 18-19 players or 2-3 per day until sign-ups end.
-
If you had 96 players 32 would be given a first round bye if you fill the bracket in the standard fashion.
Another option would be to pair everyone until you reached a predetermined level or have a lone bye.
Ie.....
98.....49...25....13....7....
96....48....24....12....6.... .
Yet another option would be to take the first round losers and have them fill the open spots. This would help two great pilots flying against each other in the first round. So if you have 96 it would go something like this....
96 competitors....
Round 1 Part A 32 winners 32 losers 32 idle
Round 1 Part B 32 idle winners, 32 first round losers fight remaining idle players
It would be first come first serve for anything amount of players over 96. More work but would be fairer to the people who have to fight there way past each round verses giving someone a freebie.

there should be no "bye's" IMO
-
there should be no "bye's" IMO
The only way to make sure of that is to limit the tourney to 8, 16, 32 or 64 players depending on interest level.
I like Strips second idea but think we'll leave it as is for now. Because everything is by random selection it's still as fair as it can be. The guys who have to duel in the first round will have to be on their game and it will be even more of an accomplishment if they go all the way.
I don't really want to introduce double eliminations or best of five as it reduces the "any given Sunday" phenomenon. The way it is, even if you lose it could simply be you had an off day and I think the importance of each duel in the current format will keep people coming back even if they don't get past the first round (I know I could have won that one but...). Furthermore, if two great pilots get matched in the first round and one is eliminated it leaves room for a lesser pilot to advance. I think this also helps keep the tourney interesting for all skill levels. Just my thoughts.

I would say that since the match up selection is done at random, having a "bye" is as fair as a month long player drawing a veteran in the first round.
Just trying to say that the "byes" will be drawn from a hat so everyone has a chance to get one so I think the way BE has it now is best way.
-
I'll fly the 1st week. I don't need no stinking bye.
Quit yer cryin childrens. :aok

Vudak posted last month to say he was looking for a house, getting some more qualifications and trying to launch his freelance history teaching skills as a sustainable business! He probably wont be around much till christmas so if he doesnt contact you I would say he is probably going to be semi-AWOL for this tourney.
-
I have some time, I would be willing to be on the committee if you need another.

Who says you're getting a first round bye? Even though the odds are with you only the random draw knows for sure.

I still don't understand why there has to be any bye's?(sorry I'm difficult) one at the most,
why don't you take the number of players and divide in half and random pick which one's duel each other, and so forth till there is only one,
"There can be only one..." :D

Because 2 players play for the championship. To determin those 2 players 4 have to fight, 2 are eliminated and 2 advance. To get to those four 8 have to fight (4 eliminated, 4 advance). To get to those 8 players 16 have to fight. To get to those 16 32 have to fight. To get there 64 have to fight. Each round half the players advance and half are eliminated. As soon as you add 1, 2 or more people to any of those rounds it forces a bye for someone (or multiple someones) somewhere in the tournament.
I could match everyone up in the first round assuming an even number of players but if the total number of players isn't the right multiple (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128...) then the bye just gets moved later into the tourney. You eventually need to arrive at one of those multiples.
I'll ask everyone this question... please post your response:
A. I would rather see you limit the tourney to the first 64 players that sign up. Advantages: No or very limited byes, most everyone gets to duel the first week, you know exactly how long the tourney will last before you sign up.
or:
B. Don't limit how many can sign-up. Advantages: Everyone who wants to play gets a chance to do so, less likely miss the sign-up period if you don't frequent the BBs, does not artificially limit potential growth of the event.

The people crying about byes are just silly. There's no points for advancing to the second round. I vote give a bye to ink in the first round. Then I'm gauranteed not to fight him in rnd 1. :D
-
Choice B will reduce tourney attractiveness.
Just my 0.02.
-
I say no limit to number of players. I think it a little silly to have such a concern over some people getting byes.
I think giving the maximum number of players the chance to participate is the best method of getting such an event to grow.
In short, I will have to say my vote is for choice B.
-

lol I would just keep missing, and the first shot I gave you I would be in tower. :rofl
and no I would not want a bye :furious :furious
i definitely don't think we should limit players, so option B
-
Can we declare ourselves to have bye immunity? ie: I want to fight in the first round.
-

this we could work with, if there are too many that wish to fight in first round we could have a drawing for that as well.
i too would like fight in first round. no sense in delaying my death a week. :D
-
B, the fact that I might get a bye in the first round is not a problem me since it is hard for me to find time to fly lately. At least this way I will still be able participate (not sure if I make the cut 64 player cutoff for choice A).
-

-
Can we start this crap already, Im telling you the win is mine :rock :devil
-
I Would Just Like To Say :salute To Those Flying In This Duel And GL To All :aok
-
I can see how some think if you go with plan B, you'd be degrading the "tourney attractiveness" and I agree, even though it is a sign of the times in todays world where in most sports "everyone gets a chance" on lower levels. These days the words "did not make the cut" do not come up for most sports, unless it is professional sports.
I think to keep the event going that you should make a limit somewhere, to give this event more meaning then being opened for everyone. Pick a limited number of spots and keep it that way. If more people become interested after 2 or more of these then think about expanding it. or have some short "wild card matchups" to fill the last 1/3rd or 1/4 of the slots for the official event if more than say 64 sign up for it?
just a thought  Good Luck to everyone

Has not failed yet, lets give it a try.

Who says you're getting a first round bye? Even though the odds are with you only the random draw knows for sure.
Awarding byes in tournaments is often done in accordance with seeding. Seeding prevents the best players from meeting in the early rounds of a tournament and reduces the risk of spoiling the event if top players should meet and eliminate each other early. Byes are therefore normally given to highest seeds first, or to the best players, for three reasons. Firstly they are most likely to progress anyway and will probably get to play several matches before being eliminated, secondly there is then less disparity in ability in the first round resulting in closer more enjoyable matches for more players, and thirdly more of the weaker players may get more than one match. Since this is the second tournament, it should be possible to rank (seed) players based on their performance in previous events, and award the byes accordingly.
Just a thought.

although there is only one event like this ( BaldEagl's 1st Tourny ) to go by..... it still could be possible to "seed" , as Badboy described..and it would only get easier to do it this way the more events/Tournament like this that BaldEagl host for the community.......
either way I don't really care........ either it will be a limited slots event or it will end up being the never ending rounds of matches to the 1/4 or semi finals......regardless if it ends up being 3 rds, 4 rds, 5 rds, 6 rds, etc........ plus just remember the more you add the more chances you take on people not being dedicated to show for their matchup........ creating more problems, for those who are really serious about this event.....
my worthless 2 cent
