Title: Software Licensing file???
Post by: Ruler2 on September 20, 2009, 10:04:46 AM
Well, I got a virus last November and it killed my PC,I borrowed a Vista CD from someone and repaired it,but not everything was fixed and now I have a mess of duplicate files and overlaps. I was trying to install FSX the other day, when it finishes but says there is an error, I looked that up on microsoft's site, they said that their MSKB928080 would fix that. I got that and ran it,but when I tried to clean all that it is supposed to clean,it says that the SoftwareLicensing folder or file could not be cleaned,I forgot what exactly that file was,but when I got there I noticed there was NOTHING inside of it,does anyone know how I could fix that?

I've never had success repairing Windows with the installation discs.  Especially with a major virus its better to back-up what you can via various methods and format it.  I could find anything real via Googling your problem.

You can try starting with information here: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=441

I have only had success with repairs on missing startup files and it sounds like you have a much bigger problem.

I think what you have given me has got me on the right track, but I'm not quite there yet.

but I HAVE at least found the file location that isn't there,it is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SLDL\SoftwareLicensing.   I wonder if maybe it would be possible for someone to copy theirs and give to me?  :noid

You just discovered my number one rule for fixing windows.  reinstall fixes everything :)  dont lose the cd or the product key.  write the product key on a piece of tape and tape it to the inside of the case, back of desk and on the wall right next to your desk.  :D

If your computer is legal it has a certificate of authenticity sticker. If not you've bought a pirated copy of windows.

Plus a reinstall every year keeps your computer a clean lean running machine.

It's legal,I have the sticker on the side of my original case, that's what I used to activate it. I also have the "CD" on a small partition of my HDD so if anything happens,I can just reinstall again.
