Title: What's your favorite car.
Post by: Jimdandy on January 25, 2001, 06:14:00 PM
If you could own any car you wanted which one would it be? My personal favorite is the Ford GT40 MkII. It's just an all around monster. FAST, handles great, and it has a big block Ford in it which is a big plus in my book.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Next would be a 427 Cobra. This is aircraft and vehicles. Lets talk car type vehicles.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Dodge Stealth RTT

I know that doesent sound exotic but i ALMOST bought one a while back but im still young and had had an accident or 2 so I couldent force myself to pay the insurance on something like that.  But I did a test drive on 95, anywho they are a V6 with a 2 turbochargers, most folks dont think a v6 anything could be fast but it puts out between 300-320 hp, man that thing scared the crap outta me, it had faster acceleration than I could handle.  The thing is that they are not out of reach for the average Joe either, between 15,000 for the RT and about 22,000 for the RTT (the RT puts out about 255hp cause it only has 1 turbo)
This is the exact model I drove and ALMOST bought accept it was that new yellow color.

Always drooled when I read about the Callaway Corvette they called the Sledgehammer.
Docile enough to be driven by your grandmother to the grocery store, also had a top speed of 254 mph (not estimated, tested, proven, documented).  The thing was special order, expensive as hell, but it had all the amenities the production Vettes had, such as PS, PB, air conditioning, etc....
The reports said the engine torque, even in the nether regions speedwise, was ungodly.  Sounded wild to be pinned back in the seat when accelerating past 190 to 230....
Would also need a megabuck lawyer to keep me out of jail..... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I had it figured out once........lets see......leave Amarillo, hammer her down, and assuming no accidents/delays......the 116 mile trip to my front door "could" be made in around 29 minutes.
They had to "detune" the engine from its initial setup, as the twin turbos made more power with the radical cam, but the low end drivability suffered, so they took it down to 880 from 1100 hp.  My kind of car.

All great cars guys thx for the replies. BTW if any of you would be kind enough to post a picture of a GT40 MkII on here I'd sure be grateful. I can't get a picture on this damn board for some reason. I'm sure it's operator error. Oh dang, I almost forgot the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport! Someone has to put one of those on here. Bad machine! It would pull the front tires off the ground in second gear out of a corner! Ummmmm torque. As you can tell I lean to the older rides. Not that the newer ones aren't cool and in many cases much nicer cars. I just like the old rides.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

That I own:

1943 MB "jeep" and Bantam 1/4 ton trailer.

That I have driven:

A first year Pontiac Trans Am Firebird.. The 303cu in one. When it was a race car base.
And the silly owner let me drive it in rural Nevada. No speed limit back then :-) How
fast? I don't know, the speedo said 145, I was ...under 21 :-)

That I got to sit in:

A tie between a 1932(1?) Buggati Coupe and a Ferrari 275GTB.

That I just want:

The 250 GTO that Funked thought HE would get:-)

Ford GT-40 '67    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/cool.gif)

EDIT: LOL! didn't even finish reading your post when I allready posted   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) I think we share the same taste in cars allright! I picked '67 model because they won Le Mans 1967 and 1968 with the same car (THE SAME car I mean...same serial number   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif))  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif). Yep I know it has "only" 302 cid V-8 because of the rules that came into the GT-class that year. It should have had 427 too   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). I just love all Shelby-products...Cobras, Coupe Cobras, Shelby GT's...everything. And everybody knows that Ford is mans car and Chevys are for nancy boys, right Verm   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif):EDIT

Yes, another GT40 fan!      (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Did you know that Lee Holman builds a new 1966 GT40 Mk IIA's. It's only $250,000 US. At that price I think I'll buy two.      (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) lol Sounds like you like the Mk IV's. Those are cool too. The Mk II's were steel chassis and the Mk IV were Al. Both had the 427 cid, FE block side oiler. Mk II's were rated at 485hp and Mk IV's were rated at 500hp. I just like the look of the Mk II's better. The Mk IV's were faster.

New part:

The 1967 La Mans winner of the Gurney/Foyt team was a GT40 Mk IV with the 427cid. It averaged 135.49mph, covered 3251.18 miles (a record not matched until 1971). It also won the Index of Thermal Efficiency at 6.5 mpg from a 7.0 liter racing engine! It was the first and I think so far the only US made car to win Le Mans. They were GREAT cars. Ford actually used computers to analize the aerodynamics of the GT40's They are still considered to be a very aerodynamic car. Not that they generate massive down forces like the new ones there low Cd cars, slick thru the air. The result was the fantastic fuel mileage.

Sorry Jimdandy...my menory didn't serve me as good as I thought it would. My favourite car that I'm talking about, GT-40P serial no.1075 actually won Le Mans races in '68 and '69 NOT '67 hehe   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) So they must have changed the rules before 1968 Le Mans and it indeed is built in 1968. The reason for this one being my favourite is as I said above...its racing history. Just imagine what #1075 would cost if it were still around   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif)...jep you guessed it...nothing...it wouldn't be on sale    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

The big races this baby won:

-BOAC 500, 1968
-Nurburgring 1000km, 1968 (Class victory)
-Spa 100km, 1968
-Watkins Glen 6 hour race, 1968
-Le Mans 24h, 1968
-Sebring 12 hour race, 1969
-Le Mans 24h, 1969

You are definately right that Mark IIs look better than IVs...they are almost ugly! Mark II looks great, I just think Gulf Mk I looks even better   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif). There's no point arguing which looks better tho...beauty is in the eye  of the beholder   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). Anyways...they sure fulfilled the task they were made for...whiped the floor with Ferraris   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
Yep I knew about Holman's new-built GT-40s. I read about them from a finnish hot-rod magazine...one can always dream, huh? That's why I have 1/18th scale die cast model of the  No.1075.

This site has pretty good GT-40 pics and other information: http://www.gt40.org.uk/ (http://www.gt40.org.uk/)

If I could have any car I wanted, I think I would want something that I could actually afford to keep up--and something that the Insurance would actually allow me to leave in a parking lot unattended.

I could say a Cadillac Eldorado ETC.  I like Cadillacs, and they're actually somewhat affordable to maintain (unlike a racecar). Eldorados have pretty good, though not incredible performance which is perfect for a vehicle being used daily.  As an added plus it would be much better than my current vehicle, a 1990 Sedan Deville.

1075 is alive!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) It's still being raced in vintage racing on occasion! GOD I WANT ONE! LOL! Here's a good book for you. GT40: The legend Lives On. ISBN # 185532524-1. It has some great info and really nice pictures. One shows all three Gulf cars 1074, 1075, 1076. They are all painted now with the same style but 1075 was really the only one that had that paint job. I can remember watching those cars as a kid on TV. The GT40 has been my favorite car every since. I agree they are all cool! Big block or small block there all FAST! The Mk IV's are even growing on me.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Thanks for posting the site. I can see you have real taste. Those are cool cars mrfish. I knew a guy that owned one. He was a foreign exchange student from Japan. His parents were very wealthy. I think he was 16 when he got that car. For cruising around in America he got a new Lotus Esprit(non turbo). I think at the time (1982) it was a $45,000 car. What a high school graduation present! I've always liked the Mira. They are beautiful cars.

Superbird trivia. You will hear all kinds of reasons why the wing on the Superbird/Daytona was as tall as it was. The real reason was so you could open the trunk. You here people say it was to get up in the clean air above the car and the like. They never needed to build it that high to get the down force they needed. Perfect example is the modern stock car wing. So don't let any one tell you it was anything different. I read a really great article on it by the guys who built it. They worked on the car on the side in one of the engineers garages at home. It sure made for a bad bellybutton looking car in my opinion. Hemi, 4-speed, Hmmm Hmmm   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I have a buddy that has a 69' Cougar Eliminator 428CJ, Auto, non drag pack but had original A/C setting in his garage. It's been there since 1988. Man that would be a cool car to restore.

I like the GT40 too.. but I don't believe it was a Shelby built product.  I believe he just ran the team when it won LeMans.  I stopped by the GT40 web site.. but it didn't have too much history.

Interesting that there are so many GT40 enthusiasts out there.  Although I rooted wholeheartedly for the Fords in the late sixties (my father was a Ford dealer, and I knew what side my bread was buttered on) for sheer good looks I always (secretly) loved the GT40's arch-rival, the Ferrari 330P4.  I think it's simply the most gorgeous car ever made.  A couple of links:

Very nice Cobra DejaVu. Thx for posting it. Very pretty car Bluefish. A true exotic. Here's a site for you GT40 fans.
 http://www.holmanmoody.com/gt40/gt40home.htm (http://www.holmanmoody.com/gt40/gt40home.htm)

The GT40 was started at Ford and was based originally on the Lola Mk6 GT. Ford started the project because he was pissed at Ferrari for not accepting a buy out offer. The project was originally headed by Ford factory people. Do to problems with Ford's inexperience in racing in 1964 the racing side of the project was turned over to Shelby American. The manufacturing as I understand was still in Ford's hands.

'68 Challenger RT Daytona with a custom Dvorak 440 dual quad straight tuned exhaust with whatever internal changes he makes to that $70,000 engine to attain a top speed of 256mph and not a quarter mile car.

'46 Dodge Power Wagon. No contest.

Only thing that comes close is a '43 Dodge Power Wagon WC-3 with the Ford V8 conversion.

Hey it only goes 45 MPH, but what other truck comes with 35" tires stock?   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
And with the flat head V8, you can get 70 out of it.

Flat head sixs RULE!

Only trucks Dodge ever made that were worth anything  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) The new PW Concept truck sucks, I hope they never tarnish the Powerwagon image with that ugly thing.

DejaVu thanks for posting the Cobra. It's a cool.

BMF I've never heard of that version. Dvork must have been like Yanko was to GM and Shelby to Ford? It sounds like a truly bad bellybutton set up. You ever see the old hippy movie Vanishing Point. I think it's a 70' Hemi Challenger. It's a Heavy movie man. I've got a copy.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Also have American Graffiti and Two-lane Blacktop. I always loved the AAR's and the T/A's. Had a friend with a tri-power automatic AAR.

Dune those are sharp cars. My Uncle had a 67' GT 350 when I was a kid. It was a couple year's old when he got it. I can still remember getting into it and having to put on the three point harness. I remember the stock roll bar. I always felt like I was getting in a race car. They were pretty much a race car on the street.
My dad bought a new 1966 GTO, Tri-power, 4-speed, posi, with the Tiger package. I wish he had kept that. I love the louvered looking tail light on those. He said at 60mph on the highway if you stood on the throttle it would light up the rear tires. He said you had to be careful passing or you could loose it. They also bought a 64 1/2' Mustang when they 1st got married. It was a 6cyl. 3-speed coupe. Ragoon Red I think was the name of the color. Thats the car that turned me on to Stangs. "Mustang Sally now baby.." Wilson Pickett.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Jigster! I love the old Power Wagons. I hope to find a resorted military version with the wenches in a couple of years to play with.

If one of you wouldn't mind posting a picture of a 66'GT40 Mk II and a 63' Corvette Grand Sport I'd sure appreciate it. I haven't been able to post a picture on this. Operator error.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I went to a small private high school.  One of the girls used to drive one to school.  It was all original.  The paint was a little oxidized, but body was perfect and the engine sounded incredible.

I used to have a 1500 Bug (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)  I had it until I got married.  One of my all time favorite rides.. until I got into 71 Chevy Blazers (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I sort of fell in love with the Porsche 928 when it came out, I was about 8 years old at he time...

Last year I bought myself a 1990 928GT in forest green.

5l, 48valve, quad cam, V8.
330HP
317lb/ft

Nice, makes a nice noise too =)

There's also a 1973(I think) Corvette sat outside my house, but that's a friend of mines (It's currently broken and he hasn't moved it away yet).

Guess mine would be an Aston Martin DB2... very rare, or a DB4 Zagato... extremely rare and very beautiful!    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  A McLaren F1 would be very tempting though, even if it is priced at nearly £700,000.

Funked, yes I have seen THX 1138, can't quite remember the types of cars, but I believe one was the Ford GT40.

DeTomaso Pantera GT-5. It and the Porsche 935S Turbo Targa lead the pack of tiny sports cars for initial speed. I like the older stuff. Mopars' to be exact. I like the million dollar Packards too.

Replicant, the cars in THX 1138 were a Lola T70 and a Chaparral 2F which are both faster than anything in this thread.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I've always liked the Pantera's too. You can actually pick up the 70's Pantera's for "reasonable" prices. I like some of the 20's-50's cars like the Duesenburgs (I hope I didn't spell that to badly.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)) 32' 3-window Ford coupe, 39' and 40' Ford coupes, and of course the 55' T-bird and the 55'-57' Chevy's.

Cobra's are nice but with so many replicas around....

No.. The 1955 Austin Healey 100 is my favorite.

Beautiful car.  Fold down winshield and rare enough to get noticed.   0-60 in a tick over 4 seconds , quarter mile in the 12's and a top speed of over 150.   All this and...with the wind blowing in your face.... Just like the old days when you could ride a Harley with no helmet... back before the Amish noticed em.

Just like a big block cobra in that the exhaust sets off peoples car alarms as you go by.   Quite amusing.

Call me screwed up, but when my wife and I got married, we drove clunkers until we had enough money for a downpayment on a house (Having a Mountain Marriage helped too, we married on our property in Montana, at 7,000 elevation with a small group of friends and family, thus saving about 10 grand)...after we had our first house secured, we bought a new Ford F150 which was used to do landscaping, hauling stuff around, etc. It was not until after buying our 2nd house that we bought another new vehicle, a Ford Explorer, which is my wifes dream car.  Now that everything is in place, kids education money, etc...I get my dream vehicle come this fall..anything I wanted granted it was under 50K...guess what I'm settling for?  A plain Jane Ford F250 4WD (Diesel)....I've always considered a vehicle to get me from point A to point B, and the usage from that vehicle,ie. I *need* a pick up truck for hauling wood, hauling a travel trailer, hauling mountain bikes, etc.  I guess I never got suckered for that 'American Dream' bit when it came to a car.

For all my love of hot V8, big block, USA iron, and I do love it, I drive a 1993 Toyota 2-wheel drive extra cab pick-up. I also own a 1979 Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4 for dragging thru the brush. The Toy has been a superb vehicle for a daily driver. Good mileage and very reliable. I will never have another hot rod as a daily driver. I learned that the hard way.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) I will own another hot rod in a few years but not tell I can get what I really want. I been through the fixer upper stage and I think I've gotten over that. The next one will be a turn key. A completed Cobra kit w/427 or a Cobra Coupe w/302. If I can find one at a less than astronomical I would like a GT40 MkII kit or a Corvette Grand Sport. Some day  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Not without a reliable daily drive first.

jihad I had a '74 TA. I've always liked the TA's. My uncle bought one new in 77' 400 (the real Pontiac engine) 4 speed just before Smokey and the Bandit came out. We went and watched it and after the movie he pulled out on the road and did a big smoking 360 in the road. Man I was in heaven.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Remember Sammy Hagars song Trans Am.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) My personal favorites are the 70 1/2'-73' TA's. I'd love to have a 73' SD 455 4-speed.

Car I like to see the  most.
Late 60s GTOs

Car I would like the most
Im allmost with Rip.
Ford F350 Diesel XLT Offroad Supercab. Repainted that yellow colour that the smaller 4X4s are using.
I have been warned away from getting the Powerstroke diesel on a 250 as my dads friends have reported front end problems from the weight. So 350 it is.

Favorite car?

I work in a family-owned Autobody repair business with my father and brother. Over the years, I've been around/driven/helped build lotsa nice rides (none of them mine damnit!). Although I can see where funked and the others are coming from on the GT-40, and dejavu on the Cobra (real cobra I assume? big $)

I lean toward Street Rods when I think of something I would really like to own. Not necessarily for the car itself, but for the fun that can be had cruising that jewel to a Rod Run, where there's thousands (2-3k at Shades of the Past) more cars and owners that you strike up conversations with and possibly do some horse (car) trading. Makes a good family mini-vacation.

Right now, my pop has just started a street rod project. He's got a '34 Ford Cabriolet...

a pretty much stock car, that we're turning into a rod. Here's a pic of it just after he bought it at Hershey, Pennsylvania a few months ago.

He pulled the old flathead Ford engine out last weekend to make room for this engine,

a Cheverolet LT-1 dressed up by Street Performance. When the engine gets here in 3 weeks, we'll send the car to Fattmans' Customs to have the frame boxed and the suspension and drivetrain installed. Then it'll come back to us for the body work, then paint. Then off to the interior guy for the roof and interior work. It'll look something similar to this car we spotted in Daytona at the Turkey Run in November...
..with Halibrand wheels of course.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Sorry for the big pics fellas  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

hblair That's cool! I like the street rod too. Not as much as I like sports cars but almost.

I know I'm talking dollars again but... I would like a 32 Ford 3 window coupe with a blown alcohol Hemi, 4-speed  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) ,Ford 9-inch, no fenders of course  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) chopped, black with flames, tuck and roll, side pipes with dumps, Centerlines, of course big and littles. Love the rolling romp of a blown alcohol engine. I know a 4-speed is nuts but in my book it's mandatory.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

COOL! Both rare! You will cry when I tell you this one. I have a buddy that used to work in an engine shop. They got an SD 455 in that was being rebuilt for a restoration. The dummy that set up the boring bar for got to set the stop. He bored right into one the main bearings! Screwed a numbers matching block!

jim... if you like cobra kit cars there is an outfit that makes kits that use a 87-93 mustang as the "donor" car.  It is a pretty good kit and fairly reasonable.  The cars are quick and reliable.

Still like my Healey tho.  The problem is.. I need two cars.   The Healey doesn't have a top, or a heater or even door handles but like hblair, it is a blast to put around in.  When I was younger I lived on a Harley but these days It's pretty hard to get me out in toejamty weather in anything that doesnt have a top

Unique Motorcars is located here in Gadsden, they are one of the larger manufacturers of reproduction Cobras. As far as I know, you can buy rolling chassis from them. Here's a link to their website- http://www.cybercars.com/unique.html (http://www.cybercars.com/unique.html)

Check out this pic of a rolling chassis off their site. No wonder Cobra's handle so well, they gotta have great balance, look how far back the engine/trans sits in the chassis...

nice chasis pic hblair..  My Healey has the front of the valve covers about even with the back of the front tire also and it is 49/51 distribution on a 90" wheelbase.   My car weighs in at 2150 lbs.  The real cobras ran a little over 2500 in big block trim.  repos claim to be around 2200 but most run closer to 2500.   Even at that, engines that would not be tractable in heavier cars are very streetable.   I thought mine would be a little "flat" on the low end with the dirt track solid lifter cam but being so light....

For handling, the best thing I ever did was get rid of the old lever shocks and go with a bilstien tube shock conversion.   Some of the kits use coil overs with questionable shocks or even Mustang 2 front ends.  If I had a way I would post a pic of mine primer and all.

thanks hblair... It's fun to play around with.  Did you check out the 468 inch HEMI powered bug eye sprite?  The whole page is full of us old farts with (cough) "modified" Healeys.

Have you guys tried those Gtech meters yet? they give 0-60 times, quarter mile speed and sec, braking and g force in the turn.  Only $139 and they are very accurate (1/10 sec).   Plug in to your lighter...They kinda stop all the bull but they are a huge help in seeing if a modification actually did any good.  It's like in this game... Sometimes what you think is happening is not really so.. You have to do some controlled tests.
