Title: Canopy opening take off and landing

Being way up in years, and being lucky enough to have flown a few WWII aircraft in my time, I wonder if it would be possible to at least have the canopy open when you put down landing gear and close when you retract them.

You certainly kept the canopy open on takeoff and landing in most WWII single engine aircraft and certainly on all carrier based aircraft.

Would it be difficult to program something like this? 

Can drive an airplane, but programming has me stifled.

Pretty sure Bf109s, P-38s and P-39s did not do so.  Early Typhoons with the car door entry (not like the AH one) and Meteor Mk I's wouldn't have either.

i think he is more talking about like when you spawn in and taxi around it would be cool to have the canopy open. Ya sure the 109 wouldn't have it open in flight but there are other imprecations (like when bailing out)

No, my point is they wouldn't have it open on the ground while taxing to take off.  Fighters without sliding canopies wouldn't do that.   It is fine for those than do have them though, I really don't care.

Another one to add to the list:  Mosquito, its canopy doesn't slide or hinge, though the window next to the pilot could be opened.  Bf110 may have been a hinged canopy too.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I don't know how else to phrase this...

How do you know the canopy is opened or closed? Other than a slight frame here and there, the aircraft's canopy is completely clear, so it woudln't exactly make a big difference in visibility.

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be neat, but I'd rather see slight reflections and abnormalities on the canopy first to make it more obvious when it's opened or closed. =)

For the aircraft that would not have normally done it, fine leave them as is.

But the others, heck why not, then again it may take more coding than its worth.  Canopy sliding open, increased wind noise, increased engine noise, smoke, oil, or fire, depending on your crates condition.

Would be nice, but there are other things I would like to see first.

If you had to open the canopy to bail, it would make sense that it would take longer, and be more diffucult to get out of the plane as it was going down.  I can see it putting an end to some of the "gameyness" of riding your doomed rig down just long enough for the guy you also damaged to either bail or hit the ground first so you can get the kill instead of him... then bailing and ending sortie just before you splat on the ground.

Not to go too far off topic, but it should also be harder to get out if you are wounded. 

And if the canopy could open, there is also the possibility that it could be damaged and NOT open when you need to bail  :eek:

Wouldnt THAT suck?

one major implecation would be making it easier for taxing. Being able to see where your going because you can lean out of the cockpit, unlike at the moment where Head movement is restricted to inside the canopy.

WW2OL had( has? )  opening cockpits,.. and I will admit that it's a neat effect.  One, if not the only, aircraft feature they have that would be nice to have here.

It was very easy to know if was open simply because of the increase in wind-noise.

Or. if the canopy are open, then you cant hear your friends very good in your radio. You hear lots of wind or engine's sound.
The same can happend when you have holes from bullets in your canopy
