Title: Landing
Post by: 1776 on June 21, 2000, 11:20:00 PM
I have a question, tonite I landed a P-51 at 150 full flaps, started to steer with rudder shortly after landing and the plane went sideways and broke the gear and ended on its belly.  Now what is going on here??  Are there cross winds and if there are why don't I notice them when the plane is in the air and slow for landing???  How do I find out about wind conditions???  Air bases need a wind sock!!!  Won't this be fun trying to land on a carrier<subtile hint  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)>

Yup, it was the wind.  HT said today that they are still working on how to display it!

IRL carriers turned into the wind for landings and take-offs, although I can imagine this will be a little tricky in an arena-enviroment.

Ok, if it is wind, how come when in the air it has no affect on my plane????  I just lined up, dropped flaps, got slow just as normal.  My plane should a been pushed sideways before touchdown!!!

This wind stuff, while realistiic, is gonna make it hard to use auto-pilot and check the plumbing!!!

Wind will be fun, once HT figures out how he can show it on screen as opposed to the way a real pilot feels it on landing.  I landed my Cessna the other day in a 10-12 knot cross wind (15 is rating) and it was some hairy with a cross controlled (wing down and opposite rudder pressed to floor) configuration.

It could be a lot of fun if there's a way of feeling (seeing) the wind direction and strength.  I'm not sure it's doable though.

The other question is, what about the NEW GUYS who aren't either real pilots or experienced virtual flight sim types.  It's going to be very hard on them and you have to wonder how many will stay after 2 weeks if they're crash on landing all the time.

Maybe AH needs an auto landing function as well?

Regards,
Badger

Just an idea - a winsock with an icon above it showing wind speed at every airfield...

But I can see Bagder's point about new guys crashing and getting frustrated...

Hmm let me see you land at 150kts full flaps then try to turn, whats wrong with this picture.  did ya try to slow down how about brakes did ya try them before turning the a/c craft,  I am Sorry if i miss-read your artical by not trying to ass-u-me that you tryed to slow down first.  Secondly windsock would be perfect addition to game HT, also why not a little unicom freq to get local conditions baro pressure wind direction and speed and oh yes so we don't land downwind how about active runway. and join the rest of the real world in avation in day to day usuage of our local scareports  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)..

Good idea - a radio channel can just autoprint local info for the nearest airfield.

Landing into wind - yes please! And it's not that difficult to work it either but it adds that much to realism and immersion making it a sim rather than a game. After all - most of the posts here squeak about this and that parameter which in poster's opinion is not modelled realistically enough.

A nicer way would be to have a small smokey chimney somewhere on the airfield. You can fairly easily tell wind direction and speed from that, and it wouldn't be as atmosphere-spoiling as a icon  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

ya, great idea, smoking chimmey!!! Better then a wind sock!!!  Would be nice to have that also though.

When I touched down that is when the plane was pushed by the wind.  I shoulda had an indication of the wind before landing, it shoulda been doing what it did on the ground before touch down.

How about you do a dot command?

Like this:
<you come in for a landing, turn on final and type:>

.F13 final

<The host sends you a message like this:>

<host> Yourid, cleared for final, wind is 5 knots from the West, field alt is 240 feet ABS.

Also put a working windsock or flag on the field.

For cross wind landings the differential breaks are VERY handy  i tell you  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

C and V .. try it out folks

It would be cool.

Having a lot of problems with manual take off too.. jsut yesterday I took off with a NIK2J and when my tail went up.. suddenly the beast made a hard left turn...

Why is it ( and it it true?) that your plane is far more suseptible to wind with flaps down.. seems when I lower the flaps I suddenly have to correct for wind effect.
