I’m thinking about cancelling my GTX295 order after looking at ATI’s new flagship model, the HD5870! I've got an Asus rampage II which will works with either.
Good idea? Need opinions asap.

If your goal is to have the fastest video card on the planet, then the 5870 is a no-brainer. NVidia will not have anything to compete until February or March 2010 (if then) according to their CEO.
-
Don't forget the multi-monitor gaming capability of the 5870 :x

Reviews of the the HD 5870 compared to the Asus 295 which out performs the 5870 more times then not. Here is the link. http://www.techspot.com/review/198-ati-radeon-hd-5870-review/ (http://www.techspot.com/review/198-ati-radeon-hd-5870-review/). To me the warranty is the most important, be aware of the makers warranties, lifetime (295 from EVGA) verses 3 years. Called XFX on the warranty of their 5870 could not get anyone on the phone.

XFX has a Double lifetime, overclocker friendly warrenty, as long as you register within 30 days of purchase.

The 5870 is now the fastest single GPU card available. Period. While it's true that only in certain situations will the 5870 best the GTX295, we are comparing a single GPU card to a dual GPU card. The much lower noise and power consumption of the 5870 is not something to overlook either. Newegg is listing the XFX 5870 at 379.00 and the XFX GTX295 at 479.00. As mentioned, factor in Eyefinity and it becomes a much less difficult call from my particular cheap seat vantage point.
It's anticipated/rumoured that the 5870x2 Dual GPU card from AMD will be launched in late October to coincide with Windows 7 and it's expected that this card will completely trounce the GTX 295, also have Eyefinity and be competitively priced.
Personally, I'm looking hard at the 5850 for the best performance/price.

One should also consider the 5870 was run on beta drivers against the much more expensive 295. Very impressive results and definately more bang per buck.

This month?

Some sites suggest November, others suggest the Windows 7 rollout in late October. What I have gleaned is there may be driver development issues regarding Crossfire, which is required for that card to function ... and I would suggest that when they are resolved you will see this card.

I’ve cancelled my GTX295 order, I’m going to wait a few more months and see what GFX cards are coming out for X-mas.
-
Wise choice. You might even snatch an amazing deal just a few weeks after Christmas.
-
I have 4850 everything turned on getting 75 frames:)
-
I like the idea of running three monitors in portrait mode if it can really do that AND keep up with AA and AF while also processing heavy clouds in FSX. Everything you need for AHII can be done with far less power than the 5870 or 295 either one.

Been looking at projectors instead of screens, this would not impact on graphics card at all.

Just the room where your projector(s) will be. If it isn't dark, don't waste your time/money. But yes, it would eventually fall back on the Graphics Card.

I searched this out as I just got off the phone ordering my new system (had to send the OTHER NEW SYSTEM back) and it comes with this ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card. Dell wanted and extra $300 for it...but I said no...and gave it to me for $200.
this deal is going on until tommorow (jan-20th 7pm est) ....and I thought it was a dayum good deal.... got all this for $1329.00. I don't know crap about computers...but after doing some comparisons...it seemed like a good deal.

I have problems putting dvd's in. I'm soooooooooooo not computer literate

Foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/) is a much lighter and faster PDF viewer. It does not phone home, unless you want it to.
-
You should really just reformat once you get the computer...no Dell bloat then. :)

I use PrimoPDF instead of Adobe stuff and for CD/DVD burning IMGBurn has been working pretty good.

For about the same price as a single 5870, a pair of crossfire 4890's is supposed to be faster...?

A pair of crossfire / SLI is usually more than a handful of problems. I wouldn't go that way unless I owned a 4890 already and wanted reasonable upgrade. In many games cfire/SLI is not even much faster.

granted...but like I said...I got the card for half price... $200.00
now lets hope it all works......or it will be the third new dell system I send back in 5 months

why do you need all that extra junk? you already have a 2 year limited warranty at the bottom......
be a nice PC , if ya removed all the red and yellow highlighted accessorys.....
just saying my 2 cents
-
I concur....and literally everything you highlighted is coming off in the first hour.
the reason I had to return my last system was the Nvidia GT220 card. they had so many returns on that system (XPS8000) because of the Nvidia card mucking up the whole system...that they no longer sell the XPS8000....and they returned all the Nvidia GT220 cards. (that's another reason why I got the best card available...when I ordered the XPS 9000 system that's on it's way.)
No choice as to the bloatware. I had to fight them just to not have them load any anti-virus.
-
Rgr Zeta.......
what would be even nicer, would be to have an authentic Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English DVD instead of the Dell OEM Restore DVD that is going to load everything right back up if you have to Restore the Comp........
to make sure you remove those items you want to remove........ might I suggest getting yourself a copy of
"Your Uninstaller" or a similar program that seriously fully removes any & all traces when uninstalling programs....
wish ya the best of luck with the New Comp......... be sure to initially make a Restore point before removing anything....... incase it messes something else up.......
-
indeed...and thanks pal.
looking at ESET Smart Security 4 64 bit for windows 7 now.

All the Dell Windows CD / DVD's I've ever had are regular OEM CD's i.e. if you use them, you'll get a plain vanilla installation. Device drivers and bloatware are usually on seperate CDs.

now that you mention it........ When I got my DELL laptop thru that old company I worked for....I got both a Windows XP Home dition & a Windows XP Pro edition CD both brand New unopened....and my laptop came preloaded with WindowsXP pro and had 3 other CD's with all the drivers etc.....
so yep, I guess they all come that way..... ( from Dell that is ) ( sorry my memory slips a little more each day :-/ )
