Karnak: Have you ever tried to kill a hanger with a Panzer? Other than the VH, it takes most of its ammo load to kill a single hanger.
really ? I didnt know, i dont drve tanks a lot cause i suck in em...But, well, what the..Why?????!?!?!?**!?????
I mean, I dont know a lot about tank cannons...But common sense tells me that shouldnt be like this...it should take 3, 4 75mm rounds to kill an hangar...
Am I wrong?
Anyway...generally: arent u tank drivers angry? ..it takes so long to get to an enemy airfields (especially in some maps) and when u get there u can either:
- get detracked by an uber m16
- get destroyed by a: chog,il2,yak9u dweeb
- waste all ammo to kill just a couple of hangers
Are tanks correctly modeled? Were so difficult to kill a lil bunker :eek: ?
And if yes, were 1000 lbs eggs so much better than tank stin?

1 .50 cal bullet takes a tank track out in AH. A few more kills the tank. I spend very little time in tanks due to this bug. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
In regards to hangars, I think they require so much ammo as a gameplay factor..ie, you need cooperation and alot of tanks, supporting A/C to take out an airfield.

Also, I would think that the frontal armor of a tank would be impervious to 20mm and 40mm AA. No?

Once the damage model of the armored vehicles (Pz and FP) is fixed, they still won't be very effective.
The good old days of tank war ended a long time ago... it would be great to see those days return.
The panzer should be more of a threat to the bases, the FP should be a threat also just not as much so IMO.
The M16 should be a threat to nothing but soft targets!! (m16's m3's aircraft)
I believe the current weapon modelling in the game needs a little more diversification. 10 37mm hits to the PzIV we have in Aces should NOT penetrate it anywhere but the very rear of the tank from very close. While 1 75mm AP/HE (what was actually used by the german armor) is very likely to penetrate any part of the tank at ranges up to 2000m (64mm).

In aces high a 1000 lb bomb will not destroy a fighter hanger. :D
This is funny, I belive that a 1000lb bomb would be just about enough to take out the ENTIRE HQ.
Id be willing to bet that If a 4000lb bomb were dropped in the middle of a field, you would damage almost everything within a few hundred foot radius.
I hate game play consessions.

Highflyer, you have to add game play to historical stuff, otherwise you don't have a sim...we've already been thru 'soft hangars' in this sim, over 1.5 years ago, read the threads, they were toughened up for a reason.

In my opinon, you drop a nice big 75mm panzer shell on a Hanger and it goes BOOM. It's unusable. Period. I think that puting tanks in this game was a pretty lame idea if you don't have a role for them. And at the moment, we don't.

I was actually considering suggesting that 75mm rounds should take hangers down quickly. I don't think that it should take more than 10 75mm HE rounds, frankly it should probably take less.
Make tanks a threat and they'll get used.
Please HTC, make the tanks a threat to an airfield. Give us a reason to use one instead of a bomber.

well lets see.
3000 pounds of bombs, which contain 80%(?) HE.. 2400 pounds of HE....
16 pound HE shell..60% HE content.. thats 9.6 pounds..
so the equivilent number of pak 40 shells would be.... 250..
hey they are giving you a deal if you can kill a hanger with fewer then 4 tanks.
Not saying that for game balance purposes that the damage to kill a hanger from a panzer should not be decreased. But if we think that 3k of HE is what it takes to kill a hanger then that is alot of 75mm rounds...

True, but I was intending it to be a gameplay change. After all the durability to aircraft is a gameplay thing as well.
I would love to see tank use encouraged.
I know at least one person who is thinking of signing up, but he is mainly a tank guy. Tanks being an actual threat would encourage him greatly.

What do you mean by this? Tanks in RL are overrated or in the game? In the game I would say yes that’s true. In RL I would ask how do you figure? The tank is the king of the battle field and it always will be.
I believe the M1 Abrams took out more ground targets then aircraft did in the gulf war. How does that make it overrated?

Once upon a time you saw a panzer closing on your field you immediately made motions to deal with it, and it was great fun!! The panzer was a threat to the field, you had to stop it.
I say overrated now, because i think perhaps players who haven't used them much don't realize how ineffective they are at the present time in the game.
At the moment a single 50 calibre MG can kill a panzer in Aces... When the only gun in Aces that should be able to penetrate the panzer from any angle is the 75mm it alone carries. (not counting 88's and fleet guns or AC guns)

IMO, the things we attack here, like hangars, are symbols, not the actual item.
When you down a hangar you are damaging the fields theoretical ability to launch aircraft in many aspects. The hangars represent maintenance, parked available aircraft, etc.
I think that's why it takes varying amounts of HE that are greater than what one would expect to need in "RL".

I'm not suggesting that it is a realism issue.
What I am suggesting is that tanks do so little damage as they stand now that they are pointless.
For the sake of gameplay they should do more damage. By doing a significant ammount of damage tanks would matter and be used.

Just came from the MA operating out of A10 on the lake uterus map... peering out of my Il2 it sure looked like tanks are still used. :D

For absolutely great tank vs tank action try WWIIOL. It also has quite useful infantry. Terrain supports tank tactics quite nicely and planes are not a great threat to tanks at all, no more half hour drive to get blasted by B-26.
Next patch (I have been testing it on closed beta) adds historically accurate sights ie. germans have rotating range dial which gives nice advantage over allied tanks.
Lots of bad things have been said about WWIIOL but it is now far better than it was at the time it was released.

Actually, I just like AH a lot more than WW2O. When the new patch comes out I'll look at it yet again, as I do after each new patch, but it will have to take a major jump in performance for me to keep with it.

Tanks should be able to kill hangars in 10 salvos, so they are usefull again and we can come back to tank battles :)
The FP, should still need a lot of rounds to kill a hangar, so they relay to Anti-zaircraft role only and don't overshadow the PZs.

It does take forever to kill a hangar, 36 rounds er hits I think, and I can see the gameplay reason for it. What I'd like to see is a damage model which takes into consideration a damage model that allows the effectiveness or usefulness of a hangar to decrease as the hits add up - whether its bombs or tank rounds. Something other than the present 100% or 0% model.
Something like if a fighter hangar takes 1500lbs of bombs or 18 hits (50% of present requirements to destroy it) the hangar wouldn't allow certain types of ftrs (niki, la7's come to mind :) to spawn from it until it's back to 100%. Sumpin along those lines...

Not so. As Pongo correctly stated, a 75mm shell is nothing compared to even a small bomb. Therefore, it should never be much of a threat to any big buildings like hangars, especially if the hangars are presumed to have a metal girder skeleton. Hell, even 155mm would have trouble with that.
OTOH, a few rounds of 75mm HE should do wonders on flimsy wooden buildings like barracks and the tower. Tanks should also wreak havoc on field acks, killing them with ease and being relatively immune from damage by them except for 88s. The radar antenna should also be an easy tank target. Possibly fuel tanks as well, unless they are assumed to have thick dirt revetments around them to keep out ground-level fire. Ammo bunkers and the map room should be totally immune to tank fire unless the shot comes right down the doorway.

True enough, as long as tanks are highly vulnerable to light field acks. Fix that and tanks have an important role in a combined arms attack on an airfield. They come in, de-ack the field, and take out the radar, opening the door for jabos to take out the hangars with much less risk of ground fire and interception. They vulch planes trying to use the spawn spots to help keep the skies safe for their jabo and C47 co-conspirators.
With the introduction of trains and such in 1.08, tanks may also have an important role disrupting enemy supply lines.

Even recently ive been a part of some nice tank fights, 3 enemy tanks 1 FLAK vrs 2 friendly. A bud and i were playing on my lan and we took down 3 of them (we were the 2 obviously.) None the less it was a great smoke filled battle.
I agree that a .50 cal shouldnt even scratch the paint on the vehicle. One of my concerns is the terain, it takes around a hour to get anywhere. Were there no roads in europe??
Have we ever thought of adding in the ability of dropping a tank out of a C47? Or was this not thought of in WWII? (or even possible out of a C47).
They should also consider adding the ability for the driver to "turn out" so you can see whats going on out side better. (those who dont know, turning out is the act of driving with your upper torso and head out side the tank so you can see all around)
Im just tired of driving some where for a hour and when getting destroyed buy a M16 or buy one pass of a AC.
