Just as a observation....Even tho he was a great pilot and a respected member of the WWII community, I venture to guess that the many of the Allied veteran combat pilots still with us may see this event as "about DAM time". Just think about watching your wingman and your roommate going down screaming in pain and fear...before hitting the ground from 10k. I just think we need to remember that war is about Killing and suffering not just glory and achievement, even tho I respect his skill as a warrior and aviator......many or our allied airman never came home because of the true nature of air combat. Lest we forget :salute

I have personally seen Gunther Rall , Bud Anderson, and Shorty Rankin all share their war stories together. Not one of them hold any grudge towards the other. They said that the war was a terrible waste of young men on both sides. To see these men laugh and share tears together is a humbling experience. They may have been mortal enemies years ago but I can tell you not all American aces feel that way...And neither do I. We must learn from our past mistakes because no one was inocent of wrong doing in WWII.

I always enjoyed the interviews of Gunther Rall that I would see in the various documentaries. He was somebody that you think would be great to sit down have a beer with and just sit silently and listen to all the amazing things that he lived through.
Though some may even still today see him as wearing a uniform and still being an enemy; I think those people have wounds and issues that they are dealing with that are too difficult to allow them to see it any other way. He fought for his country but I don't ever remember hearing of him being accused of anything like a "war crime."
There have been Americans that were fighting for our country that were accused of and found guilty of some terrible things....But they too have a story all their own.
I've never had to be in a situation where I had to kill another for any reason but, I have been in some very nasty fights and, dangerous situations with people I later found deep respect and even lasting friendship with. I'd rather live in a world where that is possible and I choose to see Gunther Rall as a person that lived in that same world.

Why this has to be done is beyond me, but let's make it simple. Here is the pertinent forum posting rule everyone needs to have stamped on thier monitor, so they cannot miss it, as it is the most violated forum rule we have.
"4. Flamebaiting, flaming, being abusing, being disrepectful, trolling, spamming or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed. If you cannot make a positive contribution to the thread, then just stay out of it."
That rule, along with the rest are expected to be respected. If you cannot do so, then please leave the board so others who do respect the forum rules might enjoy it more.

:salute to Rall
So many of those old WW2 pilots are now gone, lets salute the dead and embrace the precious living that we still have.
By the way, Rall was a pall-bearer of many of the LW's greatest, and possibly some of the RAF (he did make very good friends with many of them). I will be polite and post a topic about the post war connection of the LW, RAF and the USAF.
Anyway, one of the greatest fighter pilots in history has passed. another salute :salute

Skuzzy,
I went back through the posting. I didn't see what/who it was that violated rule #2. What happened? Was the post removed?
Just learning here.......
Nothing bothers me more than someone that can't be respectful to others here. Sometimes I think channel 200 should be "shut down." But that's letting a few rotten folks ruin it for others.

Rall is and will always be my favorite fighter pilot to listen to. Everytime there is a WWII aviation show on TV, I wait patiently hoping that they will interview my favorite combat pilot. I wished I had the opputunity to meet him in person.

Could one start a thread dedicated to negative side of the person? If so,would making positive comments about that person will result in being edited according to

Not trying to insult, its just unclear.

A fighter pilot that makes it to 91 has had a darn good run. Alot of them never made it out of their twenties.
