I never got the argument against adding custom objects in each map.

Yes, make it available to the Xbox/PS types.  Give 'em free downloads during the summer months to please.

It would be nice to have 8 player/H2H back. My sons want to play against each other (and Dad as well :joystick:) with the our second PC to be built next spring. Currently this is not possible unless I cough up another $15 per month. And, I'm not prepared to have a 5, 8, and 10 year old playing online just yet.

Filesize.

Filesize of the map?  How much difference would it really make?  From the big picture, it just seems so much is held back for what real reason?  I don't think it ever took me more than a few minutes to download a map.  What's another 10 or even 30 seconds to dramatically improve the variety of the mapsets.  Just think what could be done if the library of objects were open to use by mapmakers and they could add to it over time.  Look at Rangers' volcano.  It rocks but won't see the light of day.  Why not?

Actually, he states in that thread that there's nothing keeping it from being in an MA map. Though I think he uses custom textures, which would make him incorrect.

Right now, maps are small because all of their objects and textures are in your hard drive/HTC installation. For every custom piece, the filesize gets bigger...especially with custom objects.

Custom terrain textures are allowed, just not custom objects.  MA map-wise.

OK..  But why not allow folks to create custom objects that fit within an acceptance criteria and add those objects to the library for use in other maps in the future?  I'm asking the question in ignorance as I don't understand why the roadblock is in place as it seems to unnecessarily inhibit something beneficial.  Basically, allowing player made skins and maps was a great way to offload work to the player base and increase participation.  The product is substantially stronger as a result of those decisions.  Adding that functionality to custom objects seems to be just as viable of a game design strategy.  I think the only argument I've heard is file size but it seems like a idealistic not realistic limitation.

The problem is, you're getting into a can of worms. Remember Squiddy, the giant pizza/beer bottles, and UFOs? I bet those were all custom objects at one point. But, that's five objects. As soon as one guy makes a custom hangar, then a custom runway, then there's someone who will want custom fields, then buildings and trees...and, IF that person has decent 3D skill, your installation size has just doubled. If not, tripled or quadrupled, not to mention the bugs that may come about. And who's gonna get blamed? Not Joe Mapmaker. :D And that's just one person. We have a community of mapmakers, each capable of making MULTIPLE "world sets..." You'd have to dedicate a hard drive to HTC.

Even if you try to limit it to, say, random objects like Squiddy, someone's going to whine that "he can but I can't, all I want is _____" and we're either pretty much back to here or starting that Cycle of Doom(tm).

You don't seriously think re-centering on that will do any good do you?  The hijack kept it moving in a productive direction.  Now, stop hijacking my hijack!
