Post by: BrownBaron on October 10, 2009, 01:29:35 AM
I've come by some extra cash as of late< and i cant decide which to buy, IL2 Sturmovik, or Microsoft Combat Flight Sim.

If anyone can recomend one of these, id forever be indebted to you.

Now I have a first reason to buy PS or xbox.

Quite the contrary. The first time you try to play a flightsim with the PS or Xbox controllers you'll regret the day you were born.

See the outside footage of the game, how the plane being tracked constantly bobs and weaves? It's because the player is yanking the lame console controller to left and right, then compensating by releasing the controller. No fluid movement like with a proper joystick.

And one must remember that in game things look awfully different. Just compare AH advertisement to true in-game view inside cockpit.

Il-2 and play with a joystick. CFS looks allright but the FM is bad. IL-2 is much closer to AH  :devil

Did anybody see any actual ACM in the clip?

You can buy IL2 1946 for 9$ on steam.

Don't buy Il-2 on steam.  People who have done that have had issues getting hyperlobby to recognize their .exe when they want to fly online.  Buy it from Direct2Drive ($10).

The version to get is Il-2 1946.  It may or may not already be patched to 4.09, but that's not hard to if it's still 4.08.

Yea, im leaning towards IL2 at the moment...they both have their flaws but if they make "IL2 Birds of Prey" for PC ima be all over that..... :P

You have got to be kidding me.  I wasted lots of valuable ATP responding to this post.

Yup, i think ima go with IL2 1946, also, if they make a JOYSTICK for IL2 Birds of Prey, THEN it would have much better gameplay, i think they were

pretty stupid to make a flight sim without the proper controls, but the damage models+graphics are the best out there at the moment.  :cry

If you watch the trailer i posted, it is ALL gameplay footage. No fancy tricks.

Flight Sim and Console System go together like oil and water.

With one exception...

Heh, I remember that. You could bypass almost the entire level by climbing to maximum altitude.

Get CFS3 so you can play Over Flanders Fields. I've heard it is a great game.

Or you can wait for "Canvas Knights" which is a total conversion mod of IL2.

IL2 1946 contains all previous versions of the game all condensed into one..  The latest update is 4.09 (which I think is in final beta stages)..  There are many mods that make this game look 10 times better than what it does out of the box..  I've been playing this one longer than AH..  My opinion is that the flight model feels mushy even on the most difficult settings, but it's definitely playable..  I would suggest TrackIR or setting up a FreeTrack rig as the viewing system is really not suitable for using a hat switch..  There's also quite a big community that plays online (which doesn't cost anything by the way)...

The flight model in CFS3 and IL2 feel pretty similar to me..  While there are also mods to make CF3 look, play, and sound better, it's still pretty dated IMHO..  Still, a decent game in it's own right..
The sounds are pretty good and many have ripped the sounds from CFS3(as well as other games) to include in their soundpacks.. :rock

There are several others you can check out..   Battle of Britain II for instance(released in 2005 I think).  Or European Air War: It's an older title(dates to 99 I think but will play on XP!) but still pretty good in my opinion..
The eye candy is dated by today's standards, but still very playable!  It's been a while since I've played this one so I don't exactly remember how the flight model was..  I don't remember anything bad, so it should've been decent..  I saw a copy of this one on eBay for 99cents plus shipping (which was 3 bucks or something)..

Another oldie but goodie was Mig Alley(readily available on eBay for SUPER cheap :aok)..  You could fly pretty much all the major rides from the Korean Conflict era..  Again, the graphics are a bit dated even with some of the mods available, but it's still totally playable and quite fun!

Do some research and look up stuff like "WWII Combat sim" and what not..  Then look up some reviews on games you're interested in..  Then look them up on Youtube or what ever video sharing site you prefer and check out how the game looks..  Videos of all the games I've mentioned are readily available on YouTube..

If you have a Half-Priced Books in your area, they have a software section usually has a few diamonds in the rough..  This is where I found just about every version of IL2 before I finally got 1946..
It'll be uber cheap too..  Or check the budget software section..  Saw Mig Alley there for like $1.99..

It is my thinking that AH pretty much takes the cake and is definitely the best WWII type combat sim..  You will feel spoiled while playing any other flight sim..  In my years of being
an amateur flight sim enthusiast(I say amateur because I suck at all of them), I think HTC has all their pieces in the exact proper places as far as Aces High is concerned....

Biggest draw IMO for Il-2 is the visuals and damage model. FM is only so-so, and I hate not being able to lean around the cockpit (although the views are MUCH improved with TrackIR, especially the VERY sluggish panning when using a hat switch). The field of view within the cockpit does feel better, and less "fish-eyed" than what we have in AH. Oh, and they actually have historical gunsights assigned to aircraft, and the gunsights actually SCALE to the right size (IMO I think this should be the case for aircraft in Aces High. Gunsights for each aircraft should be historical. PERIOD). I love being able to range a target in the F4U just by using the sight. :D

However IMO, the BEST WWII air combat sim there is is Aces of the Pacific. It's a much older sim so the visuals, FM and DM are VERY dated, but as far as the variety of play modes and immersiveness of the campaign there's just nothing that can touch it (except maybe EAW). You had campaigns for the USN, USMC, USAAF, IJN and IJAAF from Pearl Harbor to the end of the war right out of the box, and its plane set may be second only to Il-2:

Flyable

USN/MC

F4F-3
F4F-4
F6F-3
F4U-1D
SBD
TBD
SB2C
TBF/M

USAAF

P-40 (I THINK it had both the B and E, but I can't remember)
P-38F
P-38J
P-51D
P-47D
P-39D

IJN

A6M2
A6M3
A6M5
N1K2-J
D3A
B5N
D4Y
B6N
J2M (I think)

IJAAF

Ki-27
Ki-43
Ki-44
Ki-61
Ki-100
Ki-84
Ki-45 (can't remember if this one was flyable)

And that's NOT including the non-flyable aircraft like the B-24D, B-17D and B-17F, B-29, G4M, Ki-46, PBY and a freakin' TON of others, not to mention the WWII: 1946 expansion with the (flyable) P-80, F8F, F2G, F7F, Shinden and Kikka.

A box of Il-2 should not disappoint you.
I played AOTP as well as AOE and found it quite fun. AOTP wins for the sheer spirit. Was a lovely experience....as well as many hours. Would that still run on modern rigs? Xp?  Linux???

Think it will run on XP. Needs to be 32-bit, tho, won't install on my 64-bit Win7 box.
