So my lady heard female voices while I was flying and wants to start playing. Before I invest in s CH setup for her, can anyone suggest a mid-priced stick, maybe 20-60$ that is uber noob friendly for her to learn on until she figures out if she really likes the game or not? She loves to watch the game being played(KEEPER!) but I don't know how much she will actually like playing once the learning curve hits in. Any thoughts?
Oh and damn you too Niros for making such an awesome video that my Dior obsessed girly got super excited about the game over!
-
St290 is a great learner stick...normally around $25 bucks.

Yup, I learned on tat stick, except for a couple akward button placements, and a little calibration, it was a great deal for the price ($20)

Betty, better recognize!! Say wha.

It could have been Jaxxo's voice, he sounds just like a woman since that tragic chainsaw accident .

Well if he didnt fall down every 10 feet. He might of been able to outrun it. (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-violent006.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

You should have just said it was a squeaker.

MS Sidewinder Precision Pro. If you can find it in USB all the better.
Decent ergonomics, 2-handed placement (one hand on base, buttons for that hand plus throttle) and it's fairly reliable as far as accuracy goes (no pots! all light/sensors for stick position).
-
logitech extreme 3d pro is perfect
-
I've had several Logicrap extreme 3D pros. They are pure crap, and the pots go to hell after a couple of months.
Sad part is, the ergonomics are pretty good (except for the hat placement).

Get her the stick that you would like to have. If she drops out after a few weeks, you got yourself a backup. Mean time she sees’ you spending equal money on her hobby…. Get her a good head set as well. Lots of good cheap gaming machines available.

Gave her my older(last season) aurora R5. We decided to go with the new saitek cyborg, only other option was to get a logitech and I've had bad experiences with them. Hopefully it'll work well enough to see if she wants to stick with it!

I've had the same 3D Pro for 3 years now, and it still works fine.

Agreed. If you don't want to get a twisty stick, a Logitech Attack 3 is a great stick as well, very sturdy, but has no hat. I've been use the Attack 3 for 3 years in other games, so I can account for its sturdiness.

The 1% minority that do NOT get crappy logitech sticks are greatly outnumbered by those that experience (repeatedly) crappy manufacturing on Logitech's part.
More likely to win the lottery than to get a reliable logitech 3D extreme.

That's odd, my school's aviation club should never have to worry about funding then. And yet they do.
-
Ya know what enkre? Defend it all you want. 99% of the flight sim universe derides Logitech sticks for crappy quality. The fact YOU like it, is only a gift. Enjoy it. That you can be happy with them, is a good thing.
Others can't, most times. So I'll just leave it at "If you like it, fine" and I'll encourage everyone to avoid the brand in general.
P.S. They also make crappy wireless mice.
-

This is true.
-
Logitech= cheap, sturdy, learners sticks, completely lacking in almost all aspects of a higher end stick.
-
The only thing logitech made that was any good was... <crickets>... :huh cant think of anything but it will come to me...

Don't really want to get in some annoying war over manufacturers, but Logitech while not good at Joystick making (G940 looks promising though), they do have reliable and durable other products.
As for a good beginner stick, the Saitek Av8tr seems rather nice. Been using it (Hate Saitek, but needed a stick) for a few months now, decent ergonomics, plenty of buttons and dual throttle. Only cost about 45$ for me. :)
-
Ever since I started playing what could be called a flight sim (X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Fury 3), I had both the serial and the USB Sidewinder and Sidewinder Pro. Served me great for over 10 years, never skipped a beat. About a year or two ago though, I decided I needed to invest in a better stick for AHII. Picked up an ST290 Pro for around $25, never looked back. Great stick for the price. Nice to learn on. I still want to get a nicer stick and some pedals. TrackIR would be nice, too. But I'll stick with this new screen I got in the interim. It actually raises doubts about whether or not I have the juice to run games at such a large resolution. :rock

I'm still flying with a 10 yr old Precision Pro USB. Mine came as a serial plug but it has a USB adaptor. Love the stick, though I stopped using the base buttons in favor of putting my left hand on a mouse (mouse look, throttle, flaps, a few snap views mapped to it).
-
I stopped using the base because I got a throttle quadrant. Still have a few non-essential stuff mapped to it.
-
Just curious since we use the same stick: have you ever had any problems with a loose center?
I need to have a slight dead zone because both my Twist axis and my X axis are a bit loose near the center. Still love the stick, but it could just be that much better without this problem.
-
Not a fan of Logitech sticks, mice, or keyboards in the least but I do have a nice set of speakers from them that work great IMO. X-540... or something like that I think,

I have the gameport version only (has to be built to allow that USB adapter, and mine wasn't -- first generation), so I may not have the same issue. I had to scale it properly to get comfortable with it, and I disabled the twist (not the best, probably weakest part of the stick) once I got some rudder pedals.

Do you actually plug it into a gameport to use it? Of course that assumes you're still using it.
Sounds like my problem is just that I abused the stick over the course of 10 years. The twist is where the loose center is most annoying. Hard to have precision rudder control that way. Obviously if I got pedals, this would no longer be an issue. Aileron precision is not so much an issue.
-
Yes, I do. It won't work with the USB adapter. This is literally the first generation of MS Prec Pro Sidewinder, with the round dome throttle instead of the lever.
In my second gameport (one on mobo, one on sound card) I have my old CH pedals (non USB, non-"PRO"), and plugged into USB I have the throttle. Eventually I want to move away from gameport totally, but that's not going to happen soon.

Two minutes on ebay produced:
Buy it now: LOGITECH EXTREME 3D PRO USB JOYSTICK PC GAME CONTROLLER, FREE SHIPPING $22.95
(http://longhornloftbeds.com/share/stick.jpg)
Prolly more like it available all the time.
I use it. Own four. It's good for a cheap stick.
-
I've got a Cyborg Evo laying around here. Could use a bit of cleaning up (mostly, the angle adjustment knobs seem to "rust"), but other than that is in fine condition. I'd be willing to part with it if you cover the shipping charges.
I have a Wireless one too, but it's rather irritating to have your stick start cutting out when the single AA is dying.

funny, im using a 3d pro right now till my CH shows up and i own most of the people posting bad about them.... :joystick:
-
I would still use one of my three CH Flightstick gameport models. The one with only two buttons. But my gameport to USB converter doesn't seem to keep pace with the OS any more. :(

Hook this simple stick up with some home made pedals, and look out!~

Back to topic:
I have the ST290 pro. As I am a beginner and n00b, this stick is fine with me. It doesn´t cost that much and is good quality.

I went through four Logitech 3D pros. Constantly spiking, and overall cheep. Had one that lasted a year, the rest made about 4-5 months. Now I use a X52Pro. Had it about a year now and absolutely love it. :joystick:

Don't you find the size of it makes quick movements somewhat awkward? It affects my precision and makes snap shots in intense dog fights hard to nail.
-
Ummmm excuse me :furious, I think you are all missing what really needs to be discussed ...
A cool game ID!! :neener:
Welcome nimblette, keep me posted to what ID so I can :salute my girl in the MA!

Heh, and I can own you with a trackball, but it still sucks to fly with.

Took some getting used to, but not bad now. Going from the stiffness of the 3DP to the light feel of the X52P was huge. Was like relearning to play.

She chose beliva, we are mostly sticking in the TA right now working on the basics :) She doesn't want to make an MA debut till she gets some basics down, no sim exerpience at all. Hardest part is using the hat to look around so far and some basics. If you are around sometime between 11pm-2am this week you can catch us in there. She is very new to this so if folks would like to come give their welcomes feel free!

Welcome to AH Beliva!!!
I watched Ziff for about a year until one day he told me to fly his plane while he was busy doing something :airplane:
I flew right into a huge group of enemy fighters as fast as I could and collided with the first one I tried to shoot :joystick:
One of his squaddies said on vox laughing "oh, that was special Ziff"
Unable to touch Ziff's joystick again :headscratch: the next day I ordered myself the CH setup and have been hooked ever since!! :x
Nice to see another woman enjoying the game!
See ya in the skies :salute
-
get her the best headset and joystick out there, if she loses interest you got good backup eh see. by the way is she hot?
