I just got notified that the job I interviewed for last week.....I got!! Woot!!
I will be entering into the challenging and rewarding career of IT (network actually) SECURITY :x
I start next monday. in this position my main responsibility will be to monitor Verizon's internal network for violations (adult content, proprietary info release, cust CC #'s ect.)
e
I'm very stoked ! I felt that I had nailed the interview but, ya never know. My new boss also advised me that 1st of next year our dept training budget will increase so when i go to get my cisco certs in security not only does the co. pay for the school but i get paid while going. I aslready have the CCNA so im gonna get the security addon then get my CCSP!
The only down side is the 45min-1hr commute to work :cry I'm used to being 10mins from work. That being said the wife announced that she wants to move closer to where i work and get a smaller house. Currently we have a 4bdrm and dont need it really.
Anyways I was so excited I had to share with ya'll

Now this may sound like a rediculous question but this job ( Verizon's internal network for violations ) sounds like watching for inside the company violaters of using the emails or porn or whatever . I could imagine with a huge outfit like that , internal stuff is a major problem and policing it even difficult to do . And congrats on the job thats just plain awesome . :salute

Congrats!
As one who has worked in InfoSec for a while, being policy policeman can get old after a while. It is a good place to start out in InfoSec though as you'll see all kinds of weird crap that you have to dig into to figure out what is really going on. You'll learn fast when the firewall lights up after some pinhead installed Skype or Limewire on his work laptop and then brings it into the office.
Hopefully you have some good tools in place to monitor PII and PCI leakage. Manually parsing logs looking for that stuff sucks royally.

Sounds fun. I'm still trying to get a job. :D

cisco and security, it's like an oxymoron.

In a nutshell, thats what i will be doing. We have 2 major systems (sorry i can't name them) anywho, the 1st one gathers the info from the filters, the 2nd one catagorizes the "instances" and filters them some more. basically when it gets to me & the other guys we drill down and verify what the system found. In some instances we watch next to real time to gather evidence.
ie. my new boss gave an example of a manger lvl employee that was looking at kiddie porn. the analyst (my best freind actually) took screenshots as evidence passed it up the chain and the mngr was fired....then arrested by the feds since it was across state lines.
as a side note my new boss asked if i was ok with monitoring someone who is looking at kiddie porn and gathering evidence. my response: so long as it results in the person being locked up for a long time with some bigfoot looking fella that goes by the name "Shirley" then i got no problem with it :t
