Title: Did you know??
Post by: Bodhi on October 13, 2009, 10:20:50 AM
I was showing someone one of our Corsairs yesterday, and they were adamant that we had changed the wing attach points.  Obviously we haven't, and they were shocked to learn what holds the wings on the Corsair.

So, did you know, that only three steel pins hold the outboard wing panels on a Corsair?  Two 1 3/16 inch pins (one is hydraulically moved in and out for wing fold) and one 1/2 inch pin whold the wing panels on each side.  There is no carry through rear spar, just the main spar and the forward pivot point.

Wouldnt surprise me in the least....

Just one of those pins could support multiple times the aircraft weight in double shear.

I noticed that one year at the Reading, PA WWII weekend and airshow. They had a corsair one year and had the wings folded and it amazed me that that was all there was to it.
