Title: What will it look like in the Red Storm scenario?
Post by: Brooke on October 13, 2009, 04:35:19 PM
Winter skies in Eastern Germany.

(Don't panic, pilots of Red Storm -- most of the effect is due to changing sky color, which does not affect visibility distance.  Clouds actually are not all that dense.)

Was thinking the same thing...probably just showing us the cloud cover...

Where's the snow?

Two issues.

1.  The winter version of the rhine terrain is not yet available (post terrain-engine update, which requires reworking of many terrains).

2.  Even if it were available, the sides protested that many tanks and GV's are lacking winter skins and strongly preferred the non-snow version of the map.  (Understandable.)

In the future, we'll likely work to get winter skins into the terrain itself -- but updating terrains and making skins takes a lot of people and effort over time to accomplish, done by players who volunteer their time to do it.

There are a lot of terrains that still need updating after implementation of the latest version of AH.

If this is like what is in the SEAII arena....or if it is what is in the SEAII arena. It is actually a sweet sky to fly and if the 3k icon range is in place it makes things all that more exciting...It is amazing what dropping 3k from the cons icon range can do to quickly intensify a fight. It was quite refreshing there last night..no dots on radar friendly or con, base alert only when in close proximity to the base.... amazing the difference it made really liked it.

Yep, that is what it will be like.

The clouds will be a little different, but the sky colors are the same (gray, instead of blue), and the radar settings are the same.

The radar is setup up to show sector counters if planes are above 1500 ft. above ground level and within 25 miles of a radar tower only (no counters on everywhere at all alts) and to show radar dots only if planes are above 28,000 ft.

In the meantime, maybe we consider it fall skies, instead of winter skies?

Brooke,
You do know that the scenario takes place in January and Feburary. Not even close to Fall.

Though the clouds DO look kind of like spring ;)

Yes -- you did read this, right?

I meant that if it looks more like spring instead of fall

Sorry if I sounded insulting. What I was think sounded better in my head.

No problem.

The design is based on the fighting that took place in the winter.  It's just that snow has the above two problems this time around.

None of the skinners or terrain makers could help get winter GV skins and a snow texture added to current summer rhine map in 1-2 week's time?  I'd like to believe it to be possible given the current talent we've all seen on the skins/terrain forum.

The problem is that updating a terrain can be a big job (bigger than we think, as Dux is on it, a master terrain guy, and he says it's being a pain).  So that alone has to be done, and that's just for dealing with rhinesum.  Once rhinesum is done, it is used as the basis to make rhinewin, so winter tiles then need to be made.  Once you add in that people also would have to design winter skins for every ground vehicle, skins that have to be approved then put into the terrain, all of that work together takes it well outside the realm of what can be done in the time available.

Brooke when ever you guys start remaking terrains and need specific skins for them shoot me a PM. If I have time I would love to help out, and I'm sure other skinners would also love to help out.

Right now I'm slowly working on a winter terrain that will, hopfully, be used in the AvA and SEA and I'm going to build some winter default skins into the map, so no one can use that 'disable other peoples skins' to have an advantage while GVing.

Thanks, Larry.  Yep, that's one of the issues folks were worried about even if the skins were available by option -- that folks could turn them off and gain an advantage.
