Title: Which would you rather have: A new plane or a variant of an existing plane?
Post by: vonKrimm on October 14, 2009, 12:35:47 PM
I'd rather have a new plane.  Although (at a guess) it takes as much time to research a variant as it does a new model, same for coading; but a variant would take 1/3. the time to model and skin in my guesstimating.  So I postulate that we could have 2 new planes for every 3 variants.

I would bet your numbers are way, way off and make the two much more equal than it is.

In addition it is a matter of who does the work.  The 3D artists don't have to do anything at all for a variant like the P-47M and can continue to spend 100% of their effort on new content.  I'd also expect that the time to build the flight model of a variant is significantly lower as the airframe's handling is already there.

New plane and new variant of a plane are very similar.

New Plane, although variants are cool a whole new plane adds something for people to get good in and fly.

I like both options, but if I have to choose I would say new plane/vehicle.

Question:

Why one rather than another? I highly doubt that with as little effort as the P-47M needed that it took any sort of resources away from developing new features or aircraft.

I'd say that if HTC can sneak in "new" planes by modifying existing one with little effort while they're actively working on the next BIG update, I say go for it. Right now I feel a little spoiled by getting three updates in as many months.

Well, it all depends: which new plane are we talking, and which variant is up against it. If its the P-51H then for the love of god, the new variant!!!!!

If that new variant is the P38H I'd rather have the variant.  I find new planes more exciting, however when it comes down to it  I'm usually just happy to have a new toy available regardless of what it is.

Both. Because a variant that takes fifteen minutes to an hour to poke at (for HTC staff, the skin would take much longer of course) doesn't really detract from an entirely new aircraft that takes many multitudes longer.

i still have about 30 different planes to try..........so i don't care. i figure that many planes makes for endless fun and challenge for quite awhile.

Well I have an opinion but I'll wait to see what HT will do as he seems to have things moving along at a nice pace. The game is great with few problems.

I don't think we need any more 500 mph birds that just pass and run. The object is the fight.

Good suggestion.  Though there are jabo’s that can carry as much ord as some early war bombers.

Pardon my disorientation, I am in complete agreement with Shuffler.  Is there a snowball fight in hell right now?

Personally, I would like to see more planes from 1939 to 1941.  The problem is that these planes will be hangar queens once the novelty wears off.

As an aside, how come no one mentions the Beaufighter?

Run into my Allison and I guarantee you will have to work for it....

Dont run from 1v1's either with 95% of the planes either.

So if I am understanding this all right. To make a variant of say the P-38H it is only a matter to remodel the flight data for that plane and use the existing plane in the game to make the variant. If the plane saw service would be the cut off on a variant. Say the P-38 had about 600 built and they saw action in the war. So the P-51H would not fit this criteria as I think the P-51H did not see action in WWII or Korea and were mostly used by the Air National Guard in the 50s. It is also a different shape than the D model having a tall tail a new style air scoop and little tires & wheels. I don't care about the P38s I can't fly um just trying to figure out what qualifies as a variant for game purposes. If I am understanding this it is much easier to have a variant than a new plane like a HE-111 but would be easy to do a JU-87G with 37mm anti tank guns.
