I was just wondering. i read about the yak on some sites and the site said it was an antitank fighter. i haven't tried it out but dose the cannon on it give good damage to GV's?
-
Yes, it is alot less efficent than the Il2's dual 37mm thats why most dont go for it.

That's because it is firing HE and not AP.

oh.thanks :aok

Often cited as an anti-tank plane, this is wrong. It was a fighter through and through. There was some sort of nickname about it being a tank plane, but this was in reference to it having a gun the size of a tank's, rather than being a tank-killer.
Often this mis-translation is the source of most "Yak9T, T for Tank killer" quotes you might find in books.

i thought it was the il-2 bein referred to as the flying tank?
-
that's because of its durability, not its gun.
I guess the Soviets liked tanks, when it came to nicknames!
-
I have heard that 9T being referred to a "sniper's" plane. I suppose if youre a good shot, you could hit someone 600+ yards out. Havent flown the 9T for a very long time so I am not knowledgeable about it.
-
600? Heck yeah.
When you're at 15k or 20k, you can snipe B-17s from 1.5k out (thinner air, your round can travel farther!).
All about your comfort with the plane. Supposedly folks say the "drop" is pretty minimal on the big gun, so you can aim where you want and hit most times. I still fall into the habit of getting in close, though, "just to be sure" -- but I admit I haven't flown it regularly for a number of months. Used to like it a lot, then we got the P-39!! hehehe

In the world of AHII the Yak 9t can kill Panzer's you just have to keep hitting them in the rear end & in about the same place & only use the cannon so you can see what & where you are hitting. Been a while since I have tried to do it so with all the changes of late it may not be able to do it any more? M3 M16 are all easy prey with the cannon.

I managed to put one round of my P38's 20mm into a jeep and had it exploding so fast, it traveled 5 seconds back in time. :joystick:

The gun on it was the same NS-37 gun fitted to the IL2. Other versions of the Yak-9T had about every kind of Soviet cannon ever mounted on an aircraft, including a 45mm one. One version even had an internal bomb bay for PTAB bomblets. The 9T was effective against tanks in the war, even more so against shipping.
This is a great plane for the defense. Its small, nimble, packs a huge punch, and sheds "E" well enough for those fast landings under duress. Best of all its a great perk farmer.
I like to take one up at a base under attack, spin around the base in the grass until I can maintain 200 mph to 250 mph, and pick off targets of opportunity. Using 3 shot bursts of the big cannon. Its great against PTs or LVTs, or M3s. Even against flak I you have enough Alt you can come down with enough energy to kill the flak gunners.
And as has been mentioned, its a great bomber killer. I just started flying it and am wondering why I waited so long. Anyway these are my impressions of the plane.

Hard to maneuver the 9T, for me at least. Flies nothing like the 9U. Going vertical usually means I'm spinning up at the top with no hope if getting my gun on target...

No it sucks in the vertical, accelerates poorly, and feels kinda front heavy. What it does do marginally well is turn pretty good against many of the fighters you see coming in on the offensive. Like last night a P-51 driver learned a mistake when he allowed himself to get low, slow, trying to turn against a Yak.
It also dives pretty well and holds pretty steady in high speed dives. Other then that it is a small tough target and sheds "E" fairly fast so its great to force overshoots with. While its not fast its at its fastest down low so there are some planes it can run down. But you do have to keep it fast. Its views are terrific. Another reason why I like to fly them in the grass on the defense just waiting for an enemy con to make a mistake.
Really much of Soviet air Doctrine called for tactical low level work. They shied away from fancy super-chargers and other high tech gear believing instead in simplicity and numbers. The Yaks were the right birds at the right time at the right place. Neither they nor the Germans had fleets of high Alt heavy bombers and it reflected in their designs and doctrine. They had to have reliable aircraft that could operate in poor conditions and had to be simple enough to build with a manufacturing base that was literally picked up and moved east.
This is a really good 30 ENY airplane. The Yak 9s offer so much to AH players I would hope getting the Yak-3 would only be a matter of time. :salute

highly acurate on the 37MM unlike the germans 30MM's

We have some guys who are very good in this airplane. Maybe squirt off a PM to them if they havnt already replied. I'll bet a few ride alongs with them would help you a lot with the 9T.
-
Fly the 9T like a ninja assassin. Laugh but that's what you need to do with
such a small (but VERY lethal) ammo load.
You get in extremely close, very quickly. Do not fire until you're under 200 in
range and you go for ONE shot at the cockpit - regardless of your quarry being
a fighter or bomber. The goal here is for a pilot kill. After some practice you can
land multi-kill sorties no problem at all.
-
Unfortunately there has been a lot of confusion about the 9T in the history books. It appears that there may have some thought to using the 9T in ground support but it's primary use was as a fighter/interceptor. There used to be an interview with a real 9T pilot posted over at IL-2-not sure if its there anymore but the pilot indicated that he flew escort for IL-2's and other bombers. The 37mm cannon would insure a kill on an enemy fighter with 1 hit in most circumstances. The cockpit had to be moved back over a foot to accommodate the main gun. Over 2700 were built and 9T's began combat in the spring of 1943. The tank busting was left to the Il-2's.

I love the 9T, it doesnt really excel in any catagory though.
Its a tough plane to be succesful in 1v1 situations, but when you have a partner or are mixed up in a furball it can be a really fun plane to be in. I have had some success hunting bombers...however at high altitude and slow speeds the nose is really hard to keep still. It gets pretty wobbly if you try to maintain a 1.5k distance from the bombers. The center of the bomber is obviously the easiest part to hit from that range but I have much better luck taking them down by aiming for one of the engines. At 1.5k it seems 2 hits in one area will either take the wing off or set it flaming. 1k range is really easy to hit, its just point and shoot, at 1.5k you start to get alot more lob in your shot and often times the round will fall just in front of or behind the wing.
With tank killing I have alot of success against panzers. I have killed them with 45 degree dives into their turret rings and with single shots to their top armor from a 90 degree dive. Panzers seem to go pop easier than M3's. For some reason M3's always take alot of rounds from my 37mm to kill.

Now with the ermergance of the PT boats better flak the 9T has found new life in the game as a boat buster. Take it up to 3,000' and come down verticle on one, touching off a 37mm burst of 2 to 3 rounds. While front heavy the 9T is a decent diver and shows the other type mission it exceled in, other then killing other airplanes, and that was ship busting. The Russians fought the Germans around a lot of waterways, inland seas, rivers....ect
The Yak is a small tough target coming down on top of your PT at high speeds. :salute
