Title: Hail, Worthy Foe
Post by: Bino on October 17, 2009, 08:42:31 AM
I salute the RAF for the defense of field A8 last night.  :salute

I was the JU-88 lead for JG(K)11, and you folks positively filled the sky with red icons as we came lumbering in from the SW at 15,000 feet.  Several of our pilots and crew subsequently deplaned and have availed themselves of your famous English hospitality.  Kindly provide me with an address to which I may send packages of bratwurst und bier.   ;)

:salute Bino.  That was Rolling Thunder and the 334th FS, in Hurris and Spits, respectively.  We did something a little different and had the huge group of Hurris engage your escort while the Spits took on the bombers.   We were surprised not to see a forward sweep owing the the large point count of A8.

What confused us was the constant dar bar to the east of A8.  Other than one pass down the westernmost keypads of htat sector, I kept our Spits away from there as I was sure it was a fighter sweep.  I also kept expecting the A8 attackers from that direction.  Turns out it wasn't a sweep but it sure kept us at combat speed longer than we would have liked and drained out fuel so much that by the time you guys were exiting south at low alt, we were all dangerously low on fuel.  I had 2 minutes left and at least one of our Spits didn't make it to the runway due to fuel.

I also don't know how many 88s I hit in the engine or cockpit (those snaps are not all the passes I made) but those 303s are darn near worthless.  I wonder how the RAF actually won with those things.

Gavagai and I ended up rearming and having our own little adventure down on the coast towards Dover afterwards.  That necessitated another rearm with <6 minutes remaining and a dash at 300mph from A16 to A14 to land with 1:35 left in the frame.  All in All the most fun I have had in a FSO in months.

I'm guessing the damage model in RL was a little more... real?  ;)  Several of us commented on the relative lack of punch in the 7mm popguns we had, too.

Nice screenies!  :salute

I gunned for one of the 88s. I must have hit 4 or more Spits with my guns, but only 2 of those ended up going down.

You have to keep in mind that Axis armament was equally as bad, just bad in a different way.

Great pic Stampf. :lol

I wonder how the RAF actually won with those things.

Nothing wrong with the 8x.303 armament, but the simplified damage model makes them less effective than they might have been.  I've said before that starting a fire with a solid burst of .303s to the wing/engine of a Ju-88 happens frequently in Il-2.

Gavagai and Bino more or less covered it, but damage inflicted IRL by .303s (and the .50cal, for that matter) doesn't occur in the game. Although cannon are impacted as well, the significance to MGs is far more significant under the all-or-nothing damage model.

Great fight all around and <S> to all. I looked at my fuel state after the force hit A8 and had 1 minute of fuel with 3 mins from base.Tried to ditch it and ran out of fuel before I could get her down. Such is life in the RAF. Well played FSO Axis.

Was a great fight over A8 and many a hairy moment for all!
Landing when out of ammo and darn near out of fuel, with bombs still falling was quite the experience!
I'd started my film three different times, and forgot on the 4th....which is a bummer.
Because during that 4th filming period I flew right under a flight of JU-88's that had just dropped and dang near got blowed up by the falling ordinance!
Crew chief was pissed that he had to hose out the cockpit when I landed.

Great fight fellas! Looked like a daunting task escorting those 88's!

I do not get to fly FSO very often but, I have a great time Friday.

I look forward to doing it again . Maybe next time I will not bend my prop while landing to re-fuel.

Frame 3 was fun!  Even with the MG81's, some of those 88 pilots/gunners were real accurate with their defensive gunnery..... Not to mention 22 objects destroyed.   :salute

And IL-2s damage model is a step in the opposite extreme of absurdity. It's not at all realistic.

I could probably type up several BOB pilot stories where a flight of 4 Hurr1s happened upon a junkers or heinkel, and one at a time made passes on it until all were out of ammo. In one, the bomber limped off trailing a little oil, and they lost one of their hurricanes.

In AH the damage model isn't very finely detailed (with odds and ends) but the end result is, if you land enough hits, it goes down. At least in the stories I've read of BOB attacks, the planes could catch the bombers. Rarely true in AH.

60 some odd Ju-88s downed in frame 3, all from 303s. 1/3 of the entire bomber fleet of 180. The 303s can sometimes be a disappointment, as they were, but overall, I would say they get the job done, keeping in mind its a 1940 time frame not 1944, and they are not supposed to be as effective as batteries of 2 and 3 cm cannons.

Btw, nice pics. Very cool. :aok
