I know the big dog, COD4-MW2 is around the corner, but I picked up OFP2-DR and I'm having the time of my life. The free roaming on this huge iland alone is worth the game's price. It's typical OF game, u'll get punked in the face by an unseen opfor hiding in the woods 200 yards away, but the immersion factor is much more enhance than the COD type shooters. Big wow on the sounds/graphic effects on this version for me.
Anyway, I play it on the 360, slip the CD in, no stuff to config/compatibility issues, runs flawless with great graphics. Anyone else runing it yet, how u like it?

Everything I had seen was for PC. You're playing this on an XBOX? That might be pretty cool.
-
I'd be curious to see how it compared to ARMA 2 as well. I thoroughly enjoyed ARMA 2 and I'm still playing it fairly regularly. I'm really curious to get opinions on whether OFP2 offers enough of a difference in game play to justify spending the cash on it.
-
I wouldn't be able to tell, as I never played Arma2 :o
If u have a 360 go rent it for $6, I always do that before I pay full price.
OFP is heavily tactic based. You have ur team of 4, and u try to get stuff done. Since it's free roaming, u can plan ur next move as necessary, pass 20 min to sneack ur team to an overlooking ridge top, call in arty to soften up the town. Definitly doesn't handle Rambo style well, sometimes a retreat to set up an ambush is a wise choice. You can play the entire campaign 4 players co-op, that's prety fun.
The iland where the action takes place, takes about 9h to travel by foot, 15 min in a Cobra.
-
I picked up a copy of this last week. Not really pleased with the multiplayer, but the campaign has a lot of replay in it. The more that I play it, the more that I find. I suggest picking up the guide for it, as the game itself does not explain how to play the game very well.
-
MP games with random kids generally are boring because people screw around and dont take it seriously. If it was properly setup in a match it could be pretty good. COOP multiplayer is were most of the fun is at. Otherwise, using the Map Editor is by far the most enjoyable. Make whatever you want in maps. Huge tank/heli battles? Why not. Realistic missions? Easy.
I played the original and ARMA 1 (not 2). Very similar (as they should be from the publishing debacle), controls on OFP2 are kind of week. The quick radial commands is not quick. It's a pure console port which on PC is not very fun. But I'm a purest PC gamer. I can not stand FPS on console, period. Mouse and Keyboard for life.
-
Yeah, they should have optimized the controls on the PC version a lot better and make it more keyboard/mouse centric. It's kind of a pain in the bellybutton playing finger twister all over the keyboard in the middle of a fire fight while trying to call in artillery and give your squad orders. I hate to say it but it's better to use a game pad with this game than a keyboard/mouse.
I like the single player campaign a lot, the mission to rescue the downed crewman was a hair raiser and took me a few times to get past it.
The AI though is still a weak point like the original OFP and my squad mates have died because of their stupid AI routines. In the middle of a fire fight to take out some AT infantry in a village, we were prone behind come cover while I called in for a mortar strike on the village before we came in. My medic then gets up, shouts "AT gunner 100 meters!" and runs straight at the PRC troops and into the mortar barrage I had called in. There have been a couple of other missions that failed because of the weak AI.
Tried online over the weekend and had one game that was pretty fun, did a 4 man co-op night mission that ended in disaster but was still fun. Other couple of matches on another server ended up being a mess like though with everyone going Rambo and dying really fast.

I agree the quick command thing bites. I've been hit or killed a few times because I'm in that and my wasd keys are bound there so I can't move. And why is medic 3 keys away :P
I still have a lot to re-learn and some of the routes that the "normal" level has on some objectives seems to always lead you to an enemy squad.
-
The quick command just lags too much. Nothing quick about it. It's like in real life if you were to be switch to your pistol and you had to think about what you wanted to switched to for 3 seconds.
The AI is improved, but shows you how far we have to go in programming yet. They seem to try and flank behind you a lot. Can't think how many times my coop friend and I think we killed them all until we hear shots behind us.
Some of the physics could be better. You're able to literally sprint up a very high degree hill. I can't think of the mission name, but its the one at night where you're a sniper squad that is suppose to watch General Han land in a copter and observe/kill him. Well the second part of the mission is to blow up a radar station. My friend and I blow it up, steal a truck and for the heck of it just go right off the side of the hill (off road), probably 500 feet tall. We probably did 100 mph down this hill just fine and dandy until the bottom I couldnt avoid some rocks. Well, we spun/flipped a good dozen times. We took no damage to ourselves or the truck (other than being on its side),
-
It needs patching.
Right now there's a hit detection bug in that you can shoot someone, see the (really crappy) blood spray and yet he'll be fine.
And while we're on the subject of the crappy blood spray effect, it's stupid. You can shoot at someone from 150m away, score a hit and yet the enemy won't move in the slightest. From this range the blood spray effect is bigger than the enemy figure. Someone said this game has rag doll physics? My arse it does.
The original (and Arma & Arma2) made a big deal out of free form gaming, that you could go anywhere and do anything. OFP2 makes the same claim but I've yet to see it implemented well, can't really explain why but Arma2 just does the free form thing better, OFP2 feels blinkered even though the entire island may be available to travel around in every mission. And I really hate not being able to view my inventory and pick and choose my weapon loadout.
Oh and the views suck. And I really, really, really hate how the enemy can apparently see through the bushes they're laying in but if I go prone anywhere at all I can't see more than 3ft around me in any direction.
So far this game is not a hit with me but I'll stick at it and see if it gets any better.

The CPU shooting through bushes as been there since the original OFP, what 7 years ago? The ragdoll is there, just not the greatest. The same mountain truck driving mission i was talking about above, we encoutered enemy on the opposite hill to us. We picked them off with our thermal scopes and their bodies slid down the hillside.
As for Free Movement etc. It's limited. You can just abandon your squad in Multiplayer. If you get something like 500m from your squad, you die. In the same mission again, but playing it a second time. I went to go steal a truck to kind of goof around. I got too far out of range of my squad and I died.
Original OFP had more maps too, not just Skira, and where just as big.
I've played quite a few of the COOP mission, the AI can do some funny stuff. Mainly, decide running aimlessly at a PLA tank is a good idea.
-
Biggest dissapointment for me.
Looked fine the 1st hours I played (This Isn't a bugfest like Arma II -> Good), but like mentioned above... it has been tuned for console play. The Autosave ALWAYS saves at the less pertinent time for me (IE: Just as I have raised the alarm).
Borderlands is coming out tomorrow... maybe that'll s*ck less.
-
I actually really enjoy the game. Yes, there are a few things than need to be done, but overall I like it. Wish it didn't take 5 seconds you get your pistol out when you run out ammo in a clip, but still pretty good. Quick Command is Quick but you have to know where in the quick command the thing you are looking for is. I just memorize everything and it becomes easier to use. The 2 things I LOVE about the game are the massive landscape your mission takes place on (a few missions your objective is 2klicks away and there are enemy soldiers between you and it), and the mission support (especially artillery. Calling in the different types of Howitzer or Mortar shots is something new to me. I just wish you could explore the flatlands and the mountain on the far side of the island. The final mission is just a little past half way across the island and yet there's so much more to it!
I gave it a 7/10

I have it for 360. I would like to play a proper COOP match, if anyone wants to do that? Tag is Beneez .
I've enjoyed the game, there are a few things that could be better IE: swapping from your rifle to your pistol could be faster, pistol firing could be faster as well. Also, most times I play an on-line coop match, the game is really jumpy/laggy. Its impossible to drive or gun from a vehicle effectively, at least for myself.
*Edit. By the way, does anybody know where I can find a flyable cobra?
*Edit 2. I've read there are over 50 vehicles and 70 weapons for the game, yet I've only seen a few light arms and a couple vehicles? Whats up with that?

You can find new weapons by scavanging the dead or looking for ammo crates in the enemy areas. As for vehicles, the only US vehicle I've found that I can drive has been the Humvee but I've been able to grab a PRC jeep (looks like a GAZ) and a transport helicopter. On the first mission there is a waypoint that leads you to a PRC transport helicopter on the beach that's pretty well hidden and on the mission where you first go to the small airfield, a transport helicopter will land near the service road dropping off PRC SpecOps troops. If you shoot enough at the helicopter as it lands to drop off the troops, the pilot and co-pilot will run out of the helicopter, kill them and you can take the helicopter. This has been the only helicopter I've been able to fly that I 'captured' from the enemy, tried it another time on another mission and couldn't do it. On the final mission you can also fly a Blackhawk if you've cleared the area of AA threats. Still haven't found a LAV or US tank I can drive around, heard on the final mission there's an M-1 I can drive.

The last mission there is an M-1. But when I played it COOP with a buddy, we had to jump out quick because on the way to the Harbor Base there is a PLA tank watching the road. We didn't see it, so we had to bail out.
Otherwise, I've played around with the Mission Editor quite a bit and there u can do whatever you want. I've created maps with two sides and every playable vehicle in the spawn areas for players to drive/fly. Kind of run to goof around. When creating custom maps, you have to send the file to the person you want to play with. The game is too new for any real tutorials (outside of the mission editor help which sucks). Through trial and error I've figured out the basics of maps missions.

That's what I heard... that and it wasn't out in the US yet. Guess I'm a bit behind... lol. I'll have to check it out, I was a huge OFP fan back in the day (when it used to work on my PC). I particularly remember those 200+ yard away opfors shooting you in the head through two forests and the way the game was setup so that you always were better off sneaking into a town rather than charge into it like rambo. I was a member of a little group called STO back in the original OFP for the PC, and was also active in the map editing for the game. I remember the original OFP was fantastic in that it was one of the first multiplayer PC games setup for the online community to keep it alive after it was released by allowing the community (and giving it some awesome tools) for making addons and editing maps. I was always surprised by how many ideas I came up with and could get to actualy work out the way I wanted them to through the post-release editing and scripting.
I guess I'll have to pickup a copy... now, should it be for the PC or my XBox... hmmm.

The game does not look as good as the above rendered shot makes it seem to look like in game.

Obviously, the graphics are better on the PC if you have a system that can run it with the graphics turned up and looks good but nowhere near the supposed in game screenshots that have been posted on the Intardnet. However, the controls is firmly console centric since the PC version is really nothing more than a console port. It boils down to personal preference...if you want better looking graphics and by chance have an Xbox 360 controller for your PC, the PC is version to get, otherwise get the Xbox 360 version. One small note, you probably can get it for less on the PC (usually between $39 - $49) where as the console versions are all $59 (all console games are $10 - $20 more expensive than PC games). You can go to online stores like GoGamer and find it for less, think it's on sale for $35 on the PC.

Ditto, Granted I'm on XP and limited to DX9, but the main difference I can see right away is the smoke. Unless DX10 smoke is vastly different. it's pretty weak. I've seen smoke on plenty of DX9 setups that looks much more fluid than what is represented in the game.
-
That's how it looks on the 360. The joy of co-op when u have to actually endure guys talking like him :cry
On the Xbox, push the inventory menu button quickly and u'll cycle between primary/secondary/grenade. The med patch is not bad either to get, call inventory menu and go 1 up, it'll bring u right to it as it's brings u to the bottom item. I do like more realistic weapon change, video games always makes what u call out magically appear in your hand. It takes what seems like ages to properly store ur machinegun back on your back, and pull out a hangun. In COD it seems like u throw ur machine gun on the ground while your side arms falls from your sleeve.

Also I notice the AI doesn't see thru smoke or bushes, but they sure as death&taxes know how to lay down suppressive fire thru it.
My main gripes with the game is how hard eni is to spot in forest/bush area (but that's pretty much true to RL), and that they don't randomly spawn on the map, u find them at the same houses/places before u start a gunfight.
I do love the tactical freedom due to the free roaming, and the many hours I spent exploring/cleansing the map klicks away from the main objective. As afr as online goes, play it with your friends only. Not like COD where u jump in teamdeathmatch and find fun.

Thanks for the feedback on OFP2, sounds like I'll be giving that one a pass and sticking to ARMA 2. I don't own a Xbox, PS3, etc. and do all my gaming on the PC. What's more straight console ports drive me nuts. :)
Now if they could hurry up and get the A.C.E. 2 mod for ARMA2 out I'd be a happy camper. :)
