Title: Indentify this 1930s racer
Post by: Widewing on February 01, 2001, 12:20:00 PM
This aircraft was entered in the 1931 Thompson Trophy race, but finished well behind the Gee Bee Model Z. Over the course of the next several years, this aircraft was improved and fitted with increasingly more powerful engines. This aircraft and its sisters would win the Thompson once, and remain competitive through 1935. Identify the aircraft in the drawing.

Yes it was. The version in your image is that which won the 1933 Thompson piloted by its namesake.

Looks like a "Wedell Williams," but there were a lot of similar racers of the era. Roscoe Turner had a few of these modified for himself.
