I have an upgrade copy on the way from M$ and a OEM full version arriving tomorrow. Newegg had a deal for the full System Builders version that I just couldn't pass up $189 for a full copy. Plus I got the free upgrade with a purchase of Vista Ultimate 64bit a few months back. By Saturday I will have the new rig running the full version and the other Vista systems will be running off the upgrade.

I bought it because it was cheap but I wont be installing it until at least SP1. :old:

I would normally agree with that Chalenge, without exception. However, I think if you have Vista, especially on laptops, you are going to be better off with Windows 7 as soon as you can get it installed.
For XP owners itching to upgrade, I would agree that waiting until SP1 is released would be a good thing.
Windows 7 runs much, much better on laptops than Vista ever has and ever will.

Honestly as a home user I have been pleased with Vista...not 100% happy but just pleased...especially the 64 bit version. It just seems to run better. As for Windows 7 I have not had any issues since way back in the first beta when I could not find the drivers I needed for a few items but that was fixed just a couple of days later. Since then 7 has been the new XP SP1 for me. I am sure that there are issues that I haven't found but overall I have been extremely happy running the last RC/RTM version of 7 without any hiccups for a few months now.

Think of Windows 7 as Vista SP5. ;)

Fortunately laptops are a disease I dont suffer from and since I dont have a problem with Vista and drivers are not yet available for all my devices I will wait. Actually not all of my devices will ever be supported for W7 but I would rather wait and see than spend the money to replace them right before Christmas.

MS knows this too, that's why SP1 alpha was started at the same time with W7 beta. It's soon ready to be published and only for the SP believers.

Yep, Microsoft is doing everything it can (short of giving it away) to get Windows 7 to supplant XP and Vista. The really want to see Vista go away. They face a support nightmare if they cannot kill Vista.
-
It seems as if Windows 7 is nothing like previous OS releases from MS. Real slick, and works very well. I'm almost disappointed it's so easy (being a computer geek).

<- has Vista Home Premium on new laptop
<-needs to buy W7 ASAP.

Will probably end up buying Windows 7 Ultimate within the next couple weeks as my school offers the upgrade for $100.
The only thing I can decide is whether to buy the 32 bit or 64 as I really havent found a true answer on it besides the amount of RAM handled.
I do want to upgrade my RAM to 4-5 GB which I can do for $65.
-
I believe full retail versions include both 32 and 64 bit versions. I know the lower cost single use OEM versions only include one or the other.

There you have your answer then: Go for 64-bit. With 32-bit you are stuck at 3.5GB with .5 reserved for the operating system.
I'm "only" at 4GB now, but when I swap in 8 or 16GB down the line I won't have to worry about installing the OS again.

I know its more but Newegg has the full OEM version for $180 or $190 now instead of an upgrade. Just my personal preference to go with the full instead of an upgrade. I did that once but will not do it again.

UPS just delivered 64 bit Home Premium OEM version to me this morning for $99.99. The full RETAIL version is $199. OEM is only good on one machine and not transferable. Retail is good on one machine at a time and is transferable.
I wonder if it is legal to build a dual-boot 32 bit and 64 bit machine with one package/license?

try it see what happens. let us know :)

I can't, I only purchased the 64bit OEM version.

Installing RTM version of Win 7 right now. I've used the final RC for awhile and been totally satisfied with that. Bear in mind though - heresy in this forum at least - that I liked Vista too once it was tweaked and will continue to use it on this machine I'm using to type this for the forseeable future.

Got a question, now I have XP, so I can just buy the upgrade right, I mean I don't need to have Vista to buy the upgrade right?
-
You can upgrade XP to 7 but it will be a clean install.

Damn, I'll really have to think about it then.

Personally, I would rather save the $100 and purchase the upgrade version, then use that to do a clean installation (i'm sure it will prompt for the XP disk at some point)...

I didn't have anything to upgrade from since I built this system using Windows 7 RC 7100 64 bit so I can't use an upgrade. I bought the OEM version instead of the full retail or upgrade version. I'm not certain when I'll install it since RC is good till the spring at least.
