Seems to be a common belief that they were originally used as scapegoats (hence that word) in that if something attacked the domesticated herd and there was one of those goats in it, it would fall over and be eaten instead of the more valuable ones.

They're good eating too, meat is really tender.
there used to be a family near my old house in Chula Vista that used to raise fainting goats (the kids were n 4H). My friends and I would get really high and then go and chase the goats around to make them faint. Was funny as Hell to watch every time, it really never got old.
