Any gain for AH using Windows 7 over XP?
-
I have not run 7 but if it is like Vista there are tons of added security.
-
speaking only for myself........
I have seen increase in 5 fps on my monitor resolution. using the DELL driver for Win7 from 70hz to 75 hz using 1280x1024 screen res ( VSYNC ON )
all sliders maxed out......... no hiccups........... only nusiance you might say is the way DirectX? ( DirectSound) is not used the same way as it is in WindowsXP, so most everyone I have talked to had to do some minor tweaking on their sound output on VOX..... seriously this is the only thing I have heard in any negative way toward Windows 7.....
I have both Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit loaded on a dual boot setup........ and Windows 7 literally kicks WinXP's behine........ YMMV
-
Gain? Not really, not that i've seen.
Yes 7 closes some security loopholes.
It tends to hide more things compared to xpl
It has a lot more DRM controls than XP does.
Unlike Vista it has no real hardware disadvantage.
But that really isn't a reason to switch IMO.
However if your interested in getting onboard you might consider a dual boot.
Pretty easy to setup if you have a spare partition.
-
On my box Win7 x64 gave 30% lower framerates than XP.
But this does not tell the full truth because on win7 all sound stuttering is gone when shooting and the framerates are more stable, they don't variate as much as in XP.
All in all I'm very pleased with win7 performance. You should tweak it a little however, disable ipv6 and all optimizing features from networking. Cures warping and especially wireless connection problems.
-
I have seen between 25 and 35% reduction in frame rates between XP and 7. I never have any stutter or sound issues of any kind in XP though. However, I never use onboard sound chips either.
I suspect many people will see a gain in performance from XP to 7 as their XP system is probably overloaded with garbage programs. It will take a while, but their 7 system will get in that shape as well.
It makes the question difficult to answer. You cannot fairly compare a 2 year old XP installation to a new 7 installation for most systems.
-
With Windows 7 64bit CPU utilisation on my Phenom II X2 550 is around 20% or lower (AH @ 1680x1050), so no issues there.
My frame rate is vsync limited to 60 fps, and it's normally pegged there (8800 GTS 512MB).
I haven't run without vsync, as I didn't try that before with XP, so wouldn't have anything to compare with.

+1 on Skuzzy's remarks: a fresh install of almost anything (well, maybe not Vista) is likely to result in a cleaner system with less background stuff than a 2 year old installation of anything.
Now with all that said, my thinking is this:
If your new system comes with Windows 7, don't bother looking into reformatting the drive and installing XP. Win7 is good enough and the driver situation has now settled down for the most part. The only 2 exceptions I can think of is (1) if you MUST use old hardware that isn't supported by W7 or Vista and you can't easily or cheaply replace it with something newer -- Gameport joysticks come to mind, or (2) you need to manipulate audio or video in a manner that Win7/Vista's DRM-enabled pathways prevent you from doing.
If you have a system that's newer than 1 or 2 years old with XP and you want Windows 7, just buy a second hard drive and install Win7 from scratch onto it. You can still dual-boot to run any old software and games, but then run Win7 for all the new stuff.
If you have a system that's newer than 1 or 2 years old with Vista, just do an upgrade - it works pretty well. If you're at all concerned about the upgrade messing things up, then get a second hard drive for W7 as above.
If your machine is older than 2 years old, just stick with what you have, unless your 3-year old machine was a top-of-the-line $4000 monster.

The thought of the fresh install hits home. I'm sticking with XP for the time being.
-
I fully agree with Llama.
I switched to W7 because I had to install WinDbg and lot's of dev stuff on my personal XP computer cause the one provided by work fried the day before a deliver with a close to the metal bug.
So I had to clean up this mess radically (read format :)) I installed 1st Xp then decided to give W7 a try (I've 2 boot hd I can switch easily) and properly configured on my hardware both system are iso for performance under AH.
The only advantage W7 has is the "WOW" effect it had on my daughter and on my son ... but this effect lasted only 10 seconds :D.
To conclude :
if you are a dedicated AHer and have a stable XP system : keep it
............................. ............................. ....unstable XP system : format and next install W7 or XP.
If I'm under W7 as I type I'ts because I was to lazy to switch back to XP !
-
llama's plan is a good one to follow.
I would reinforce, if you have Vista, please upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as you can. It is a worthwhile upgrade.

Skuz, does Microsoft still plan on supporting XP Pro till 2014?

I’m currently running Windows XP 32bit on my brand new system, I was going to upgrade to Windows 7, but after reading all the performance decreases I don’t know now. I’m a gaming freak and any decrease in my FPS is a big no, no!
Core I7 2.6Ghz overclocked to 4.00Ghz, 6GB DDR3 Corsair RAM 1600Mhz...
-
I use Windows 7 and XP Pro SP3. I do not have a performance decrease using Win 7 64. What it really comes down to though is the amount of RAM and the video card you are using. I have a 9800 GT and no problem. It is better to give it a try. I have been using the full released version for 2 months (I have the key because of work.)
-
Skuzzy, should I upgrade via the upgrade method, or do a reformat? I'd much like to just upgrade...

You're a fool if you don't get win7 x64. First of all you bought 6 gigs of ram, 3 of which you can never utilize using XP32. Second your i7 runs multicore and w7 is best optimized for that. Lastly your hardware is way more than enough to run AH or any other game on w7.

For an intel core 2 duo E8400 system with an nvidia GTX260 and 4GB memory, is there any benefit to installing the 64bit version of win7 instead of the 32 bit version? I do some photo editing so I might eventually drop another 4GB of ram into this system, but of course I'd have to be using 64 bit win7 to do that.
Any downside to using 64 bit win7? Have the driver issues been sorted out?
And yea, I'm one of those people who are going from winXP to win7. I've been using win7 beta and release candidate on my laptop, and I have to use vista at work, so I want to move to win7 and just get the migration over with. It's past time to reinstall winXP on my main computer anyhow, so as long as I'm reinstalling something it might as well be win7. That way I also get DX10 support for my vid card too.
Thx

my understanding is MS will continue support for 2014 meaning code and bug fixes etc.. active support will end at the of the year i am told meaning if you want to ask questions about it you will have to pay it unless you have some other agreement etc etc etc..

Will there be do do list to tweak W7 for best performance?
He asked hopefully. :pray

Driver issues?
Wasn't that years ago?
I suppose if you have some older hardware there might be a problem, but otherwise I would be surprised if there was any problems.

the original question of this thread was there?
Any gain for AH using Windows 7 over XP?
I posted my personal experiences, in regards to what I have experienced between WinXPpro 32 bit vs Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit..... for AH
as far as my personal results/findings & beliefs of how much better Win7 is over WinXP......
certian software programs I use, for instance AutoCad MEP, performs 500 times better, since I have the use of my 4 gigs of memory, the better utilization of my dual core AMD cpu.etc.............as well as a good handful of other software I am(was since I am hurt/out of work ) required to need use.......
as for having an old 2 or 3 or 4 yr old installation of WindowsXP(pro) and it being bloated down from years of use....this is very much so the case for most common users.... on the other hand lets say a small 2 to 5 % of select users stay on top of their PC systems and keep them running in top performance regardless of what they might have installed OS wise, or how they have set them up......this is the exception and not the morm.......
so it is a toss-up in the air for each individual user if they will see positives or negative performance issues in regards to switching from WinXP to Windows 7...... again..this is just another person's observation.........but as I have posted in other threads I have seperate HD's for work and for gaming.... total of 4 seperate OS versions installed on my Current PC set up using 4 different HD's...... and again the exception to the norm of most people.....
not sure if this helsp or not, maybe it will...... I have not had any driver issues to date since beta'ing win7 starting back in January of 09.......

Sorry for jumpin' in. I was told a fresh install is best by several IT guys. Back up your data.
-
I would have to think going from XP to windows 7 that it would reformat the drive and not overwrite. Acedemic versions of windows 7 upgrade are 43.00. Of course you have to be in school or affiliated with education system somehow, ie teacher etc.

No worries! Backed everything up and am doing an upgrade (before I saw this response)...my OS is pretty fresh so I will probably wait on a reformat after Christmas or so.
-
There is no need to reformat if you already use the NTFS file system!
Windows 7 moves the old windows folders out of the way and calls it Windows.old. Then installs itself in Windows.
This is for a full installation (not upgrade).
Windows.old gets the old "Documents and Settings", "Program files" and "Windows".
Not reformatting allows you to find stuff you may have placed in weird places (some programs tend to do that), even after having installed Win 7.
Of course, none of the old programs will work (they just sit and waste space untill deleted from the Windows.old folder). But that's the point of installing a fresh version. All horrible old baggage disabled at once.
-
Never going to do the "upgrade" crap again, screwed up my whole system like people said it might. Time to reformat.
-
Aside from my little incident earlier, W7 is GREAT!

You can do a full install what is not an upgrade without doing any reformatting.
The two are not directly related.
