Title: AH1 to AH2, a look back

This is for HTC to look proudly at, any player who never saw AH1, and any "Vet" who'd like a blast from the past:

Funny.

My graphics don't look like that.

Most of us can't even turn all that stuff on much less play with it on.

Now turn off the detailed terrain and fancy water graphics, shadows and the hi res textures and turn off anti aliasing and show them side by side again as most of us see it.

Thats not the point of the post. He was merely demonstrating the differences between what we had then and what we have now. My system is far from top of the line, and i can play with all the effects turned on. HTC has done a good job in making the new graphics engine playable on all manners of systems. Its not their fault that you are unable or unwilling to get a better computer. If you want the fancy graphics, Pay for them.

Ranger, you oughtta include inside cockpit views. I remember flying the old modeled B17 with the old standard instrument cluster, and drooling madly when they redid it.

Unfortunately, those maps aren't included. NDIslies has the beer/pizza/UFOs (in the crater to the northwest; it was removed in the AHII version) and AKDesert (aka the Old Pizza) has Squiddy in the middle.

There were two less-famous maps that had Squiddy in some obscure location and more UFOs out on a plain in the countryside, but I don't remember which ones those were.

Great shots ranger!   :aok

If you have it, could you show the towns in comparison?

Remember there use to be a barracks in the towns that had to be killed to knock troops down.

Any, great shots from ranger and great work to all at HiTech.

I had forgotten all about that...but I had never really had a chance to pork in AH1. :D

I miss how the old objects used to spew stuff when they were destroyed. Made StukaBombing a town really entertaining.

And, of course, the infamous Porked Small Airfield.

Thanks to Roscoroo, you can download AH1, AH1 Terrain Editor & many old H2H terrains:

http://www.roscoroo.com/maps.html

I liked the way the town buildings looked in AH1 better I think.  Also, notice in OOZ's pictures above, that we had beaches in AH1, yet in AHII, it took years for them to be back.  Also, I think the water looked better in AH1 than most versions of AH2 (the new version still makes me wet myself tho).

Ah, the memories...  I always thought the Aces High terrain gelled really well even though it was low-res--I especially liked the beaches.  I really liked some of the CT maps like the frozen FinRuss map we had or that sweet customized Pacific island invasion map (can't remember the island) that had little pixelated cities.
It's taken us a looonnngg time to get back alot of the terrain diversity that we had in AH1 (and to ditch the checkerboard), and I've always been a little sad about it (Can we have another desert map like AKPizza?  :x).

I remember angrily quiting AH1 for a few months when they killed the laser bomb site and added bomb-scattering wind (even though they added the desert terrain and the A-20, too), but now I'm thankful since it finally forced me to start dogfighting full-bore...   :salute

I have no idea; never heard of it. Though it may be infected with that Jeefo virus I caught a while back...hadn't thought of that. I'll remove it anyway, since there's an alternative download in the thread and I've stopped using RapidShare.

Curious, I downloaded it

That wasn't a copy of the one Rosco hosted, but rather his that I had downloaded, used, and (when his site vanished) rezipped and uploaded. Certainly possible that my version was infected, though I'm pretty sure that was long before I caught Jeefo.

Man this brings back alot of memories. It's so amazing to think that I've been playing this game for almost a decade . Oh how I remember there were only 2 types of airfields (small and large) with 2-3 LASER ack that could shoot up to 10k. I remember how you could only takeoff in one direction and that there were no hangers so flight was unhindered. I remember how you could bomb and destroy both the tower and runways of enemy bases. And one thing I'm sure many of you will be thankful is gone, I remember paying $30 a month to play online.  :D

So many memories.

Heh KKEN IIRC I started in Dec 1999 while the game was in beta 3. I remember flying for free those months until HTC went gold, after which I had to mow yards all summer to pay the monthly fee.

Geez do I feel old and I'm not even 30 yet.  :old:

I definitely remember that... I played the 2-week trial and had a blast, but I sure wasn't paying $30 a month for any game... :O  I definitely signed up when it went $15, though.    :airplane:

At $30 a month it kept a few hundred of us plenty busy. Those of us who have flown Air Warrior @ $2 per hour and more, $30 a month was a deal!  :D  My first couple of months in Air Warrior in 1996 was nearly $100 each the first 2 months and then AOL came along and I think it was some package thing at $15 a month or so. I haven't missed a month of flying the whole time. It never gets too old for me but I do sometimes opt not to jump in.
I still hit it hard some weekend days while doing inside chores, laundry etc. Squad night is Wed night, has been for years.

The Scenarios are really fun, I haven't done any FSO or events other than Racing. I still manage to get 40+hours a month in!  :D Just built a gaming machine in Feb for $2,200. I cringe on the cost of PCs, upgrades in Hardware, cards, modems, NICs, RAM, hard drives..... A new Car comes to mind!  :rofl
I have no wife ack so it's usually quiet during my hobby and I really like it that way!
