So, why do you fly/play Aces High?

I've always been fascinated with WW2, especially aviation.  One night when I was about 10ish (so 7 years ago..) I was being an all around nerd watching the History Channel and saw the advertisement.  Parents wouldn't let me download it, and I forgot about it.  Time went on, attended air shows, read books, learned as much as I could.  Finally, in March of 2007, I thought about the website.  After searching the web I found Aces High and finally downloaded it.  What was "I'll only play it for a month or two and only at nights when I have nothing to do" became an addiction.  Now I not only play so I can fly my favorite era of aircraft in a fun way, but I play for the enjoyment of socializing with people from all over the world.

I'm a history geek, that's about all it takes to understand what is going on as my ten year obsession with this game and why I keep coming back for more.  I grew up outside of Sacramento, CA where my grandparents lived.  My grandpa was a bomber pilot and flew B-25's, B-17's, and B-29's yet never shipped overseas due to one reason or another,  he was retired already but my grandmother was a civilian contractor at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, and we used to drive over to the base and I got to wander around a bit and look at all the airplanes.  McClellan was a maintenance depot so you never really knew what you'd see.  I recall seeing F-111's, F-15's, A-10's etc.  So I'd go see Grandpa and we'd go over to the base and I'd ogle the airplanes then we'd go back to his house and I'd lay on the floor in front of the TV with thumb through WW2 books till I fell asleep, very fond memories.

Aces High usually reflects whatever my current historical interest is.  I cut my cartoon fighter pilot teeth on the P-51 back in the AH1 beta days as I was fresh off another reading of "To Fly and To Fight".  From there I got interested in the F6F and the F4F,  I started reading books like "The First Team" and "Fire in the Sky".  Then the P-38 obsession began and grew into an interest in the South West Pacific Theater in general, P-38's and P39's trying to hold the line in 1942 and '43.  B-25's commerce destroyers and their low level work in New Guinea and Rabaul.  Trying to recreate some of those childhood fantasies about being a fighter pilot.

I re-started this thread because a bunch of sweakers got it off topic... I think it can add value to allow us to expess why we like this sim.  But I can hear the sweaks from a few replies already...  :furious                       :D

I play AH because it's an environment that I can easily share my passion with other combat simulation enthusiasts in either a country or squad based manner.  Because I can actually speak to the guys I fly which helps with the immersion factor.  The game has lots of interface options (i.e. ground/ship/aircraft) that helps me immerse myself in the game.  I can turn off my external world and dive head first into the cockpit of a P-51, or a Spitfire, or a Bf 109 and pretend that I'm caught in a dogfight with an enemy who is as skilled and passionate about the game as well.  And if I get shot down, and get a salute on a good fight, it makes the entire flight worthwhile.  I've also made a lot of good online friends here too.

I'm also an dedicated admin becuase I believe that the guys who actually run this game give a dang about their players, listen to their complaints and issues, and work really really hard to make this game what it is today.

So, why do you fly/play Aces High?

Because, after decades of online gaming....this is still the best PvP type game there is.

I fly here 'cause the Air Force told me in 1992 my eyeballz weren't good enuff.  :cry

Always loved aircraft, specifically WWII birds. Grew up idolizing my uncle who retired from the AF as a bird colonel and flies commercially. Got my pilot's license in 1991 while in college but couldn't pass the eye exam for the AF Acad, so I stupidly gave up thinking it was a medical brick wall. Couldn't afford (or justify) continuing to fly just for fun, so I turned to motorsports, club racing specifically with NASA and SCCA. Like a lot of you guys I'm a history junky, WWII mostly, and stilll retained my love for aircraft and fighters. When I saw the tv ad for AHII on History Channel I had to check it out.... and my life hasn't been the same ever since. Sold the race car a month later.

Fast foward 7 months and I have a hard time keeping track of whether it's day or night, what day it even is, the wife has taken the kids and left me, the bank got the house and cars back, and I'm playing in the attic over my parent's garage while eating ramen noodles and sleeping in a cardboard box.

Just kidding!   :)

Had a game called Il2...got separated and was left with what I was wearing and the kids...so when they go to bed I need something to do.....decided one day to see if there was such a thing as an online flight sim/game....saw 2 weeks free...thought sweet........I got addicted.....I will shoot something down, I will. Didn't happen so I had to pay...got my first kill...woohoo....even more addicted now....then I had my first real fight that lasted more than 3 merges....still got owned<S> Archiaus.....but that bought on a new phase of the addiction.....now,it is all of the above plus the community.....sure we all have our moments but all in all it is a great set of people and when push comes to shove we are all of the same mind set and could sit/lean, drink, and spin some SHawk. The mix of people here reminds me of the forces.....I love it......Good,bad,ugly and gorgeous

PS   I had no clue about aircraft in general ...except that's how you get from one place to another cross country and sea faster..... now I find myself searching and learning about the different type of vehicles and aircraft...looking for their uses, strengths, weaknesses......my kids now have an easy time getting gifts due to my new hobby/interest.......

I came across the game by pure coincidence, and got curious enough to download it. That was about two years ago..

I have always had an great interest of WWII, and as a kid I read these comic pockets called Combat. There was alot of dogfighting stories in there, both from WWI & WWII. As a kid I also made cartoon plane drawings that I cut out and glued to my bedroom roof, making it a sky of aerial combat. I even drew tracers across the roof, and some planes that was gone up in flames..  :lol
That's over 25 years ago now, but I still remember that roof.  :old: :D Had P51's, P38, corsairs and spits there, and they were fighting 109's and other German planes. Alot of them were unrecognizable as they were just a ball of fire and smoke..  :lol Think I was about 10yrs at that time.

But I kept my great interest of aerial combat, and one of my favourite programs on Discovery Channel was offcourse Dogfights!

And after I started flying AHII I am literally in heaven!  :rock Its so much more than just a war simulator.. It's is a place to learn about history, make loads of friends and have tons of fun hour after hour. I just love it!  :aok

I am really looking forward to seeing how AHII develops in the future, and I am really excited about the WWI consept. Can't wait to get back in the game again, since I've had a break for a couple of months just now.. But I will be back!!  :salute  :airplane:

P.S. I'm from Norway, so if my grammar is not all correct I am hereby excused!  :neener:  :rofl

So, why do you fly/play Aces High?

Because work is not nearly frustrating or aggravating enough.  I play Aces High to make sure I push my blood pressure and mental limits over the edge everyday!    :headscratch:

I am a child of the 1950's, 1950 to be exact.  As I grew up there were only the leftover model airplanes of my older brother, and the green army men, the rest was all imaginaton.  I used to "dream" about playing something like aces high, but of course couldn't conceptualize anything like this.  At age 34 I discovered Air Warrior, and later Aces.  So in essence I am still that 9 year old boy.

I was drawn to it by nostalgia. An era of epic conflict, sacrifice courage and not always triumph. Was not an aerial buff nor military enthusiast,
but it was a roundabout link that reminded me of those that have passed and a few that still remain that I know so I gave it a go. I fly it for a vague sense of adventure and
challenge, but more for a comradeship with those that are here also.  Only has been just short of two years now and I truly enjoy the
time spent in conflict and concord with the characters within AH.

I started AHII through playing warbirds and people there would whine about AH and say It was full of ganging, hoing, picking, ramming tards who were insanely rude to each other. So, this is the place for me.
