Title: Name this Pilot
Post by: Holder on September 20, 2001, 11:41:00 AM
Okay for all of you American flier enthusiasts, name this WWI pilot and the unit he is shown with. For extra points identify the plane (and location, time of day, and name of photographer).    :D

Note, I removed his signature, etc. from the photo which is why it looks so crappy.

Captain Eddie Rickenbacker (American 'ace' with 26 victories), commander of 94. American Expedition group in France posing with Spad 13 about the end of WW1 (note the infamous emblem on the side of the plane)    :D  Am I right or completely wrong?    :p

Right Squad, right airplane, wrong pilot (and you haven't even tried for the bonus points).

Try again.  ;)

Major Reed Chambers (http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/usa/chambers2.html), SPAD XIII, 94th Aero

I'm guessing that the date was 9/3/19

Do I win?

More info on Chambers (http://www.ngb.dtic.mil/gallery/heritage_collection/twodown.htm)

Sandman gets it exactly right, the man, the squadron, the airplane, and the date. It is Major Reed McKinley Chambers DSC(3 oakleaf clusters) Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur and Croix de Guerre with 2 palms. 94th Aero Sq. 7 victories. Taken "somewhere in France" on March 9, 1919. Time of day? I'm guessing morning due to the low angle of the sun, photographer? Just a joke.  :D

Sandman gets an extra 50 points though. Well done and nice profile.

Okay... I can't take all the credit...

I'd like to thank:

the academy,
MadBirdCZ and Funkedup for the kite and the squad,
and Holder (who left the remaining clue)

CLUE: ".../chambers1.jpg"

er... I cheated.
