BTW the dent in the side armor remains to this day.

Grun,  

   the dent is in the side plates not in the armor.  The Iowa's have internal armor thats is inclined at 15 degress.

I've seen this on TV several times. I think some of the guys in the gun pods were killed, it was quite a large explosion with flaming debris all over the side of the ship.
