Title: Just want to see how many people can answer the following questions:
Post by: MachFly on October 26, 2009, 10:44:37 PM
1) You are stuck on top of a building, you have a chronometer and an altimeter. How do you find the height of the building?

2) You are outside a room facing three switches. Inside the room is a light bulb. One of the switches is connected to the light bulb in the room, two lead somewhere else. All three are in the off position. You are allowed to enter the room only once and once inside the room you cannot leave it. How do you find out which of the 3 switches controls the light inside the room?

3) I am the beginning of eternity, the end of every rhyme. The begging of the end and the end of space and time. What am I?

1) READ THE ALTIMETER!!!

2) Give me time to think on this one, wanted to get the other two answers in first ;)

3) The letter 'e'!!!

nope   :)

what if the building is on a hill? Altimeter tells you the altitude MSL not AGL   ;)

In which case I would say, assuming you have the knowledge and wouldn't mind parting with the altimeter, drop it and time the drop, use kinematic equations to find distance.

Turn on the first switch, wait 10 minutes, turn it off.
Turn on on second switch, enter room.
If the light is on, it's the second switch, if the light is off, feel the bulb.
If the bulb is warm, it's the first switch.
If the bulb is off and cold, it's the third switch.

Why so complicated? Just read altimeter at top of the building, go downstairs, read it again. Substract reading B from reading A. :)

"You are stuck on top of a building," :)
Could be a problem.

1) You are stuck on top of a building, you have a chronometer and an altimeter. How do you find the height of the building?

Read the altimeter if you're at sea level :P

If not, then read the altimeter then drop altimeter from the top of the building, time how long it takes the altimeter to smash on the ground. 9.8m/s formula..do the math...tells you the height of the building. voila.

2) You are outside a room facing three switches. Inside the room is a light bulb. One of the switches is connected to the light bulb in the room, two lead somewhere else. How do you find out which of the 3 switches controls the light inside the room?

You enter the room and use the force to move the switches until the frakin' lightbulb turns on.

3) I am the beginning of eternity, the end of every rhyme. The begging of the end and the end of space and time. What am I?

err the letter 'e' ?

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POSTS MAY CONTAIN THE CORRECT ANSWER

1. Drop the altimeter off the building while simultaneously starting the chronometer. When you see the altimeter hit, stop the chronometer. 1/2 x time(seconds of fall) x acceleration of gravity = average speed. Average speed/time= distance.

2. Put one switch on for 5 min. Turn it off and put another one on. Quickly go in the room.
If the light is on, then the last switch you put on obviously goes to the light bulb.
If the light is off, feel all 3 too see if one is hot. If hot, then the first switch you turned on is the right one.
If none are hot, then the switch you did not touch is the right one.

3. E

1. need to know the GMT to use the chronometer to determine actual latitude and longitude of said building to determine sea level

2. try the switches before entering room

3. e

1. Figure out how many floors the building is, multply it by ceiling heights and you'll be in the ballpark. Sell the cronometer to a guy on the street for lunch money.

2. Open the door to the room but dont enter it and check the switches.

2) turn 'ON' all three switches

3)  you are the letter 'E'

That my friend is the answer, everyone else who said turn all 3 switches on, I thought about that but the question asks how do you know which of the 3 switches controls the light.

1. Take the barometer, drop it from highest point of building and time the descent with chronometer. Plug numbers into the equation (gt^2)/2 where g is the force of gravity and t is the time to impact.

2. TinMan has a good answer and was along the lines of my first thoughts.

3. A period....or singularity according to modern physics.

The problem with #2 is that you are only allowed to enter the room once and once you do you cannot leave it.  I think FiLtH is right on that one.

#3 Can't be a period because of the question.  The letter "e" is correct on that one.

You might have me on three but number two...

The switches are outside of the room....
Title: Re: Just want to see how many people can answer the following questions:

I know, so if you turn one on, let the bulb heat up, turn it off, turn another on, go in to see if the bulb is warm from switch #1 or is still on from switch #2, the question and instructions state that once you are in the room you cannot leave, therefore if the bulb is neither warm or on, you could deduce that it's switch #3.  However, if you open the door and look in without actually entering the room you can try all 3 to verify like FiLtH said.

Not reading the thread...but drop the altimeter and time its fall
E is the third one.

That's how I'd do it.... But you have to look over the side, might get scary...or just use the surrounding buildings windows as a mirror...

For the dropping and timing thing...wouldn't you have to know the weight of the altimeter also?

No.

Yesssssss, one thing I did learn from going to the museum in Richmond as a kid is that everything falls at the same rate no matter the weight as long as their aerodynamics are the same.  They had a cool little exhibition of this, you put two balls that are the same size but different weights and cranked them up about 10 feet or so on this tower.  Then you pulled some lever and it dropped both at the same time, it was amazing to see how they both landed at the same time.

that's because they do not get a chance to accelerate fast enough for air friction to take effect

My apologies, I worded it wrong. You can not look inside.

BTW, I will post the correct answers 24 hours after I asked the question

for number 2 you could also flip on the first, look under the door and keep going until you see "the light"

look under the door

well at least you did not say "drill a hole in the wall"  :rofl
Title: Re: Just want to see how many people can answer the following questions:

CORRECT ANSWERS:

1) Drop the altimeter and use the chronometer to time the fall, then you will have enough information to calculate the height of the building.
2) Turn on the 1st switch and wait 5 min, then turn it off and turn on the 2nd switch. Go into the room; if the light in on it's the 2nd switch, if it's off and warm it's the 1st switch, and if it's off and cold it's the 2nd switch.
3) The letter "E"

Thank you for posting these. :aok  I love these types of puzzles and questions.  :D
I'm not reading others responses, I'm just winging it... first guesses...  Here goes:

Quote
1) You are stuck on top of a building, you have a chronometer and an altimeter. How do you find the height of the building?

Let's see, you could drop the altimeter off the top of the building and time it's fall to the ground with the watch.  If you know the terminal velocity of the altimeter, you could then calculate how tall the building is.

Quote
2) You are outside a room facing three switches. Inside the room is a light bulb. One of the switches is connected to the light bulb in the room, two lead somewhere else. All three are in the off position. You are allowed to enter the room only once and once inside the room you cannot leave it. How do you find out which of the 3 switches controls the light inside the room?

OK...
1) Turn the first switch on and leave it on a good minute or more.  If it's THE one, it will light the bulb and heat it up.
2) Turn the first switch off and the second switch on and enter the room.
3) If the light is on, well, it's obvious, the second switch controls it.  If the light is off but warm, the first switch controls it.  If the switch is off and cold, the third switch controls it, and your stuck sitting in a dark room thinking about Swoop's next Wednesday's Babe until someone lets you out.    Pretty sure I got this one, yeah?  :rock

Quote
3) I am the beginning of eternity, the end of every rhyme. The begging of the end and the end of space and time. What am I?

On acid?  :headscratch:    I fail.  :(

Was fun!~
Checking my answers with the others now.

 :salute
