Title: Spitfire Armament & Loadout options.
Post by: Karnak on September 07, 2000, 10:29:00 AM
I would like to see a few more options for the Spitfire.  The following would be nice:

Spitfire Mk Va: 8 .303 Brownings.  Bader's plane.  Not very useful, but it did exist.

Spitfire Mk Vb with the machine guns removed.  2 20mm cannon.  Field mod that was sometimes done to improve performance.

As far as loadouts go, the Mk V is pretty much correct.  I don't know if the Mk IX had rocket capability, but it very well may have.  I know that the Mk XIV had the capability to carry 8 rockets.  I have never found any information about Spitfires actually carrying rockets for ground strikes.  They did have the capability though.

I'm going to have to side with the Luftwobbles against the RAFanatics as far as the 4 20mm cannon equipped Spitfires go.  I'm afraid, given the way the Typhoon's durability is modeled (it isn't) that a 4 20mm Spitfire would be completely imbalancing.  The Tiffie already has a hard time justifying its existance because of the F4U-1C, no need to make it more pointless.

If the LW want the option to remove cowl MG's on the evidence of one photo why don't the RAF get 4 x 20mm.

To be honest i am not that bothered with the getting 4 x 20m and hey give the LW the option to remove cowl mg's. Frankly i would be for overmodelling Lw planes slightly in every concievable area. The purpose of this? hopefully it would destroy their persecution complex and there would be less whining.

1. The Mk V looks and flies like a VB, yet it has the VC's ammo capacity for the cannons? Remove the extra ammo and call it a VB.

2. The Mk V is missing it's 250lb wing bombs. Possibly the 30 and 90 gallon slipper tanks should be added too.

3. Add Mk VC(T) with 4x20mm, with the option to remove 2x20mm, as was done to Malta Spits. The VC(T) would perform much worse than the VB thanks to the added weight and drag from desert survival gear and Vokes filter etc.

4. Make the F.IX a "real" 1942 plane, not some hybrid of 1944 options with a 1942 engine. Remove the GERMAN 300l drop tank, add the 30/90 gallon slipper tanks, and remove the 1944 "E wing" and rockets.

5. Add a "real" 1944 Spitfire - LF.XVI, with the rear vision fuselage(teardrop canopy). Larger fin, "E wing" guns, rear fuselage fuel tanks, 50 gallon torpedo drop tank, same bombloads as Mk V and IX.

Concerning rockets; the RAF never used them in combat on Spitfires during WW2. They did test several types and installations though. However, other air forces equipped with the Spitfire did use rockets, the first time being in December 1944(Mk IX).

Is the way to measure the strenght of a storm.

Much like the Richter scale for the earthquakes.

I think Beaufort scale has 12 degrees, but I left it in 10 because I wont be part of the storm  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Ah.  I see.

The Richter Scale is open ended, but the largest that is possible on Earth, without an outside force, is between 8.5 and 8.8.  The rock just can't take anymore strain than that.

Geologists estimate that the impact off the Yucatan noodleula 65 million years ago caused quakes on the scale of 13 or 14 on the Richter Scale.

Juzz,
I thought the Mk V Spitfire was limited to 500lbs of bombs?

Karnak, the Mk V was the first Spitfire to carry bombs - 2x250lb wing mounted. The 500lb centreline came later. Possibly the MTOW of the Mk V excluded the carriage of both loads, but I don't think so considering that the heavier Mk IX could carry both.

I want a 2 cannon spit! v and IX.

I also want a 4 cannon mkv. Why else would you fly one? Adding 4 cannon would increase its use 10 fold.

Why are the brits always left out? a mk 12 came out in 43 and almost as many served in ww2 as the 1c.
What about the high alt mk 6? almost as many used as the 1c?
How about a mk 7 <this is realy my fav.
how about a mk 8? Its better than the mk 9 right.

I guess what im saying is that the spit was the best.
The brits made so many marks and options that its a shame only the mk IX ,V and XIV have been represented.

Why are spit dweebs not as organized as the lw guys?
If the 109 has 3 versions so should we!

Eye,
Not to start this, but only the V and IX are in AH.  I would expect the next version to be either the I, XIV or XVI.  Who knows when we'll get it though.
