Title: Ordered my TRACK IR 5 yesterday
Post by: Pongo on October 29, 2009, 11:59:20 AM
Looked through the posts here from the summer and it seemed like it would be a good upgrade from my track IR 3 with vector.
plus it will stay put on top of my lcd monitor!
I will be whining here about how to get my views set up so that I can check 6 in a hellcat!

I upgraded a few weeks ago. (also from TIR 3 with Vector).  For me it makes a big difference.  I used to get stuck in full down view often... never happens now.  I also don't run off the edges as much any more. (never been able to train myself to sit still)

Other than that, I don't really notice the higher resolution in Aces High.

I've also possibly found a bug... A couple of times I've lost head tracking (Version 5.0.230).. and when I've shut down and restarted Aces High, I've found the arena limit lowered (thus can't get back into my most excelent fight... )  I'm thinking possibly that this is related?

Nope, not related to Track IR - I sometimes lose track ir ingame, and have to restart aces high to ensure it picks up tir. The arena limits are set by HT and fluctuate during the course of the day.

Well I am waiting at home for the thing to arrive. Dam UPS.
A bit more control arround the perimeter of the view would be great, but I am hoping for a decrease in stutter, not that there is much as I pan, but I want none and have the hardware to hope for none.
I would give up the armour behind my head in the hellcat to get the rear view.

Nice thing about the 6DOF... it's pretty easy to get it tuned so that you can move your head against the canopy and get a decent  rear view past the armor.....

I used to be pretty good at switching views with my fingers... but with the 6DOF utility in Aces High.... I would not be without a 6DOF TIR...

Well,
got it set up and it makes everything way smother. (only tested in TA so far.) :O
I can also look around better, ie farther and smoother near the rear views.
So, someone will get a deal on a vector track IR 3. lol

What do I tune to get better rear views? in AH or in TRACK IR 5?
edited for the appropriate emote

You'll want to tweak the curves in the TIR software.  Change just one thing at a time, test it out, then change it again.  Maybe give it a couple of tryouts before you decide wether or not to keep that particular change.  Once you get that variable to where you want to keep it, go to the next one.  If you change too much at once you won't know where to go to first to fix something that's bugging you.  It's a process but not a terribly difficult one, just takes a little time and patience.

well in default it is a nice improvement on TIR 3.
smoother, wider field of view, never get crotch lock.
Nice product.

Can you get a good 6 o'clock view? I was thinking about getting one of these, if they're worth it and work well.

I can get great 6 views in anything that has some kind of view backwards, the hellcat, one of my favorite planes, I cant see back at all in yet cause of the armour. But I havent tried tweaking anything.
The TR5 vs the TR3, is night and day though for looking back, it doesnt bother the 5 ever to look 180 back. Really the 5 feels like it comfortably has twice the viewing angle of the 3, and all of it way more smooth.

One of the tricks with Track IR is to move closer to your screen, center it and it should then give you a better arc for your 6. (Basically, it mimics your head moving forward in the cockpit).

I have a tir 4 with the led clip running 5 software. Maybe toggling to pan view you set your views custom I haven't tried it yet. Not sure if vector expansion will allow it.

It would be great if there was some coordination between the track ir and custom settings, so that when you went 6 view, it used the set 6 view for that aircraft, but there doenst seem to be anything like that.
Pollack, I have the 5 with the non LED clip, I think vector is now built into every Track IR, it was just an add on for 3(my old one)
Thanks for the hints guys.

Once I finish work, i'll chop around with an old profile to see if I can get a better view in the f6f - if I can, I'll push the process your way Pongo.

I just got my TrackIR 5 tonight. Kind of weird..... but I haven't been able to spend much time customizing the views.
The ability to look forward/up and side to side is good but anything behind the wing is very uncomfortable.

I normally fly an F4U-1A. Trying to look behind me when vertical is impossible so far.......I can look up and back a little but I have to lean way back and turn... so far I have to let my hand off the stick.

Any clues would be much appreciated.

I'm sure its complicated at first but, you'll probably get the hang of it.

Noah, make your profile more aggressive - by which I mean, when you move your head, you want it to be moving more ingame than in reality. So when you move your head 20 degree's in RL, it moves much more ingame. For instance, the way I have mine set up, when I'm staring at the centre of the screen, it doesnt move, I look left 5 degrees in rl, and I'm looking at my 9oclock, another 5 degrees and I'm looking behind me. Ditto when looking right. The f4u has the big armour shield behind, so you have to move your head a bit further to see round it.

Noah,
Just on defaults with the non led clip, I have no problem looking right to my 6, so its your physical set up I would say.
Make sure you have a good distance, the unit is pointing level at your clip and you are reasonably close to the thing.
Really, my problem is not seeing to the 6, its seeing around the full armour plate.

I think part of my problem is that I got the TrackClip Pro.

It's pretty large and it's meant to go on a "Creative" headset.... I have a Plantronics headset that has the frame behind the neck. I've tried wearing my headset over my head but that makes the prongs of the clip too high. I've tried clipping it to one side of the headset but, then I can't see well to the side it's clipped to. I may need to either a new headset or the older baseball cap style clip.

I've managed to improve my views a lot but, in order to look behind me and up or, side now I still need to be sitting about 3 1/2 feet from my monitor. That's too far from my desk to keep my joystick on it and, it's harder to see the screen. Not quite sure what to do there yet.

Ya, I have a deep deep desk, and that helps for sure.
