Or does the 51 seem a little to good?
-
If you think its too good now, you should have seen it in beta before it was nuetered (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Seriously, I think that the P-51D is probably one of the best modeled aircraft in the game, unless something drastic has changed in 1.06 that I don't know about.

Never flown a real P-51, but from what I've researched, it seems spot on. Agree with Verm here, seems to be the best modeled P-51 I've seen. About it's only weaknesses are slow acceleration and average climb rate.

50% fuel which lasts quite awhile and the pony will climb very nice, hit 8K and it takes off at least for me 3500 with 220 IAS. Guns seem to not hit buffs very good but man it turns and zoom climbs rather well

Which version of P-51 is he refering to?
P-51D is about what I would expect.
P-51B handles decidedly better than I expected. This thing is an LA7 killer (try it).
Either way, I'll agree that plane performance in AH is excellent. Aside from small issues, most of them are exactly what I expect. The only plane I wonder about is the 109G10 (I think it should be renamed a K4), and even that is debatable.

P-51B is missing about 200fpm off it's chart climbrate right now too, so it can only get better. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

It might be that veteran pilots are flying them now. Also consider that fights are higher in this new arena and high altitude happens to be where this plane performs well compared to other a/c.

It's a good plane. But if you make them turn, many planes will eat them up. Plus many planes can out climb them, so you can beat them with a looping fight. And finally, they aren't the fastest anymore. I ran one down in an La-7 the other day and I'm pretty sure Typhoon, Tempest, Fw 190D-9 can do this also on the deck.

True Funked.
In my opinon the La7 is the most dangerous opponent of the P-51B.
While the Typhoon, Tempest, and Dora can also run it down, I think (emphasis on think, I haven't tested it) the P-51B will out turn all three of these planes.
I flew my first P-51B mission last night, and I will have to say I was quite impressed, quite agile in comparison to the D model. I ended up with 2 kills and I believe an assist, before I was kill over the horizon by a heat seeking 88mm ack shell to the cockpit from A11. Yes it literally tracked me down, when the base wasn't even visible to me.
Anyways, I think the P51B could be a real sleeper. Don't underestimate it.

Took it up for a joy spin, got in combat with LA-7 somehow lost control went into a Goose watch the Canopy spin. Needless to say pancaked on hill side next of kin were notified Pilot was drinking an was forbidden to take off. WIll give it another shot.

Naw...P51 is average..:P
The only thing that makes me roll my eyes is watching it do that little flick stall...I equate it to what some ppl say they see the 190 do. I never thought that it was good at low speed handling but some ppl (not necessarily the plane) have the ability to keep it's nose pulling up at 50 mph..hehe

Tempest will out turn the P-51B and I'm pretty sure the Tiffie will too.
