I can't WAIT for this one to come out in a couple days:

Got my character(s) created already with the free character creator. :D

Thanks for the link! This is what I've been looking for, a non MMO RPG to play.
-
This looks like it oughta be a GOOD one, too. It's bloody, it's violent. Oh, and watch the "Violence" trailer. Looks like they take the "Romance" side-plots of Neverwinter Nights & NWN2 and REALLY ramp it up beyond what the sanitized world of D&D games allow. :devil
When you have TRAILERS that require age verification, you KNOW it's gonna rock. :D
Of course, being an RPG they're still going to completely FUBAR weapons terminology (I'm dreading the one-handed "longswords" and ludicrously heavy two-handed swords)....

Lucky for me, my local gaming store doesn't give a rat's bellybutton about street dates and picked up a copy last night. Almost called in sick when I realized it was 4am and I had to get up in 4 hours when I stopped playing. Between this game and Borderlands (another excellent game), my weekend is gonna be shot.

I hear the main quest ALONE is 90-odd hours of gameplay, and this isn't even counting the side-quests.

Played about 5 hours last night of the origin begining for the city elf and haven't finished that part yet. Heard the origin story line is around 8 hours or so before I get into the main story line.
As I mentioned, Borderlands is also another great game. Too bad it released just a week and a half before Dragon's Age, it's almost as good and with the cell shaded artwork it's one great looking game. It's also funny as Hell and the loot is way over the top, reminds me of the crazy random loot drops from the Diablo series.
In a couple of weeks, Modern Warfare 2 comes out. Funny thing with that game is a lot of major games that were slated to be released in Q4 have been delayed until Q1 of 2010 because studios like EA and Ubisoft didn't want to go against the jaggernaugt that the Call of Duty series has become.

In the midst of the origin story now. The PC version is absolutely gorgeous and the character animations are outstanding, (from the reviews I've seen the PC version is the most graphically polished, followed by the PS3 and 360 in that order) and I love the soundtrack (I really hope they release one. I loved the one for NWN2, too, but I don't think they ever released that one, either). The one complaint I have is not being able to rotate the camera by mousing to the edge of the screen, which just feels more natural than using the keyboard. Looked for an option to do that but I couldn't find one.
I DO also miss the formation options from Baldur's Gate, rather than your characters moving as a random mob. It'd be great to have them moving with a wall of shields up front and an archer or mage that stands in the back. I'm going to have to either turn off or tweak the auto-action stuff, too. Getting tired of setting a defensive position on good high ground, only for my characters to charge into the fight as soon as I switch between them.
I can't wait for the contect creator to come out.
-
The Steam version unlocked last night and I spent a good portion of the evening playing. Already suffering from the issue that cripples me in all of these games, I'm never happy with the decisions I make regarding character direction and keep changing it up. :)
So far I'm quite happy/impressed with the game though.
-
The "No alignment but your actions DO affect the outcome" idea is very interesting. Granted, I'm already falling into my usual role (do the right thing above all else and hang the law) but I can see where this is going to offer a LOT more playability than your usual Lawful/Chaotic/Neutral and Good/Evil pigeon holes.
-
I don't know, havent researched, but is this a single player game or an online, WOW type game?
-
Dragon Age is a single player offline only game. Think of it as Baldur's Gate in the 3rd person view, that's probably the closest description of the game. It's excellent and I highly recommend it. Bio-Ware has promised to support the game with downloadable content, though they haven't specified what exactly it will be. There is also a very robust editor that comes with the game that will allow the community to make new quests, with everything from voice synced characters and cinematic cut scenes. On top of the 70+ total hours of game play, with the community stuff this game is going to have a lot of content.

Just beware, EA is the true source of the blight. This rant will sum it up quite well: Penny Arcade: A Truly Fascinating Phenomenon (http://www.penny-arcade.com/2009/11/6/), along with a comic related to it.
First of all there's like a dozen or more small single item/ability/whatever DLCs around, which seem to depend on where, how and what you buy. Okey, that's not too bad, I mean who cares about a few silly items that you cannot get by any other means than by being in the right place and buying the right version.
Then there are two totally different collector's editions around: hard and digital copy. The hard copy costs whole lot of bucks, containing an aluminium box, cloth map and something like that, BUT you don't get Warden's Keep nor Stone Prisoner addons. HOWEVER if you buy the digital collector's edition, then you'll get both of the addons. They say that's because you don't get the other goodies - alumium and cloth are difficult to download. Regardless you'll have to pay alot more for the hard copy and yet you don't get the addons.
Let's forget about the collector's edition. Who needs one, right? You'll finally get the game, install it and start playing. After a while of playing you'll go to a camp and there you'll find a character who's offering you a quest. It turns out that you need to get premium content for the quest that's included in the vanilla version. The premium content costs $7 for the Warden's Keep and $15 for the Stone Keep - if you didn't get those with the digital deluxe edition.
Let's just say I'm glad I didn't find the collector's edition available at any store in the EU. I might've preordered it and found out that I'm left out of important two addons. After all I've been under an impression that a collector's edition contains all of the stuff available on the date of release, thereby avoiding all the hassle with additional material that does not ship with the vanilla version. I guess I cannot anymore rely on that notion when purchasing games.
I'm glad I didn't preorder. Simply having the EA publish the game made me very cautious and like I was afraid, my fears were proven correct. I suppose it's needless to say that I'm not going to support this kind of marketing model.
Such a pity, before the release I was anxious enough to mod a wallpaper.

As an avid PC gamer, within the last year it's hard to find a few shining gems in 'new' released games as Fishu posted above. I'm a fan of FPS games and its quickly becoming hard to find the non-console port for PC. MW2, OFP2, Borderlands...etc etc.

Actually, the console versions of Borderlands and Dragon Age are actually PC ports, not the othe way around. Both games were designed and developed as PC games first, that's why Dragon Age's release was originally delayed so they could finish the console versions after the PC version had already been completed. If they didn't delay the release so all three versions could be released at the same time, the PC version would have been released last Spring.

This game sounds pretty good, how is the 360 version? Is it worth getting at all, or should I just use that particular $60 for MW2?

just ordered it :aok is it as free roam as oblivion?

No.
-
No.
To be more specific, it's much closer to Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2. There's still a definite storyline that you follow (as opposed to Oblivion, where you don't even NEED to complete the main quest) with a large number of secondary/side-quests.

There's one more form you need to get, that's a spectre/spirit form that allows you to see some doorways that you can't otherwise see/interact with. Unfortunately I don't remember where you do that. :)
-
It's in the Darkspawn Invasion area, you need to make creative use of your mouse form to get to it.
The entire Circle Tower quest--including the Fade--was a beast to complete. I spent--literally--all day Saturday on it, and didn't finish until about 1:30am, lol.
So far my favorite party combination is the P/C, Alistair, Morrigan and Lelianna. The dog was great early on, but seems to become obsolete not long after you finish Ostagar. Alistair is a great tank and his Templar abilities are excellent for fighting against mages (he's almost a must for the Circle Tower). I like Lelianna's versatility, you can use her both as an archer and she can still hold her own as a melee fighter if you make smart use of her Rogue talents (that and it's always good to have someone in the party that can disarm traps and pick locks). And Morrigan's just a walking bag of magical whoop-ass.
I wish I could have a fifth party member, tho. I really want to be able to carry both Morrigan and Wynne, because Wynne's healing magic is incredibly useful, but with as much as you're outnumbered in this game I hate having half my party not being able to survive melee combat....

While this may be true, that doesnt change the fact that the game had to be limited in order to work on consoles.
I bought it and it does, indeed, feel like a "port." First and foremost, they had to use an engine from 1998. Secondly, although number one in the annoyance category, is the limited nature of the maps. Even the most basic of online RPG's - Warcraft - felt truely unlimited in scope compared to DAO.
Want to walk over there? No problem. In DAO? Nah. There's an invisible wall keeping me from walking through that swamp. Pfft.
DAO had the makings of a great game but it's ultimately limited by the capabilities of the consoles to a paralyzing degree, IMO. If I wanted to play XBox games, I would have bought an XBox.

You just need tank, DPS, harry potter and healer. The tank can be Alistair, Sten or the dwarf. DPS doesn't leave much choice; either Leliana or the assassin elf, because you want those locks open and traps disabled. Mage is a must have (not much choices in this department). Wynne is a must have.
Tank attracts everyone's attention, handyman gets the locks open and clears the pathway, mage keeps the crowd entertained and healer keeps the party going on.
The mage should have some nice area effect spells that do and do not affect friendlies.
Some nice spells and combos:
Cone of cold & stonefist, which is also handy for Wynne: with this you can freeze multiple enemies and kill a white labeled enemy with stonefist - Wynne can shatter 2nd enemy without stonefist draining too much mana from healing. A negligible loss of mana.
Cone of cold is also effective at keeping enemy/enemies frozen almost constantly by recharging almost as soon as the effect ceases. Very handy against higher level mobs that cannot be shattered, but which you want to keep from pounding your party. Many orange enemies - especially mages - can be kept in near constant frozen state until they die. Also large groups can be held frozen until other members of the party are done dealing with their share of the mobs.
Cheap and effective spell that you'll love to have.
Earthquake & inferno: Both are roughly equally large area spells. Earthquake is very effective at keeping every legged creature to the ground (also yourself and the party members, so beware). Once everyone is stuck to the ground you can call in inferno, that will last for quite a while. This combo can kill alot of enemies in one go. Any stragler that makes through can be easily mutilated by the party. Even better, if you can keep the stragler in the fire while pounding it without catching fire yourself.
Wynne can be nice with glyph of paralysis and glyph of repulsion. Can buy some time at critical moments.
Dispel magic is a must have - crushing prison can be a real pain in the bellybutton without it.
Grease & fire: I haven't tried it, but sounds pretty much the same as earthquake & inferno, except in a smaller radius. I prefer the larger radius - more distance to cross while flipping over; hardly anyone makes through
Sleep is a nice spell to control the crowds. It will last for quite a while - as long as the sleepers aren't hit by anything. This can be coupled with walking nightmare, although it can be often confusing to figure out who's your ally - you don't want to kill them outright while another mob is beating you up. Either let them sleep or give them nightmares. It may be the best to use walking nightmare against mobs in the back, so they will be more likely to fix onto their friends near by instead of your party, which would be a waste of a spell.

Fish,
Problem is that list doesn't account for the player character, who can't be removed from the party, so would still require a 5th slot unless your character fills one of the types (tank, DPS, WMD or healer).
That's one beauty of this game is the level of strategy involved. It's not simple rock-paper-scissors, or blasting away with fireballs until everything around you is dead (I LOVE using Tempest on large groups of archers. I'll also set up a storm JUST in front of my party's position).
I also love listening to the characters. Alistair and Morrigan's sniping at each other is hilarious. :D

My main party through out the game has been Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana. Towards the end of the game, I started to bring along my dog Muttley and found out those landscape POI's were for him to piss on and leave his mark for a buff. The one time I brought the elf-assassin with me, we ran into a buddy of his and he turned on me so I had to kill him. Only used the dwarf on the quest that requires him and never used the large albino looking guy. Was hoping to use the golem but that quest is apparently bugged and messed up my entire game to the point I had to use a save game prior to doing that quest in order to get my entire party unbugged. I neve used Wynn outside of the quest I needed he for. Morrigan is my healer and nuker.

Yeah, I'm thinking of giving Morrigan a heal spell on her next level up. It'd be much easier to give her that capability than it would to build up Wynne to the same level of ass-kickery Morrigan has from the start. Although Morrigan's Herbalism skill helps make up for things by churning out a ton of healing potions (I'm glad I picked up the dwarf merchant in Lothering, love the unlimited potion crafting supplies).
Landscape POIs, you mean the "Landmark" items which apparently serve no useful purpose? Damn, would suck having to track all those things down again just so the dog can take a wee....
Interesting about Zevran, I may have to do that just to see what happens.... Alistair was pissed I let him sign on in the first place. :D I was thinking of taking him along next time I go to Denerim to see what happens on the Antivan Crows meeting I got invited to. :D
My biggest problem with Sten is that he's single-minded about fighting the Blight to the point of absolute absurdity, as any side-quest you accept drops his disapproval. It took a HUGE hit when I agreed to help Redcliffe fight off the undead armies attacking them, even though I reasoned with him that we needed Redcliffe if we were going to beat back the Blight. One would think that a warrior and experienced soldier would know you can't fight an army on your own. The fact that he NEVER has something to say in camp makes it even harder to get his approval back up. Even Morrigan is easy to keep a high approval with if you're playing your character as a total Boy Scout by giving her something shiny every now and then (actually, she may be my favorite party member. She's certainly the most interesting--and I don't just mean her wardrobe :D ).
I haven't recruited Oghren yet, but I already know it'll be tough keeping him out of the party. Every RPG needs a drunken, surly dwarf (Khelgar Ironfist was my favorite NWN2 party member. I was really bummed he wasn't in Mask of the Betrayer).
-
Sten is a communist bastard. If he would only keep his mouth shut and keep opinions to himself like a good commie. A true commie soldier should not question the orders of his superiors.

My next play through I'm going to leave him in the cage for the Darkspawn to feast on. I just need to figure out which race and class I want to do next, was thinking trying the city elfs since my first play through was the Dalish origin story line.

By far, my favorite is a blood mage with low willpower and high constitution. So instead of being an 'eggshell with a hammer', he can take tons of damage and still be able to dish out the spells. In addition, he has the 2 items in the game that lower the cost of blood magic so I do much better than a normal caster would (last I saw it was 20% the cost for casting spells with him compared to another mage). Not to mention, he has the spell that converts dead enemies into life so he is basically the energizer bunny.
Frankly, the rogue and the warrior bored me to tears, I actually dropped my rogue halfway through playing the first time around because I was having more fun playing the NPC mages like Morrigan.
-
First chance I got, I made Morrigan an Arcane Warrior, which is probably the most powerful class in the game. With the tactics feature, she really kicks bellybutton in either range or melee combat. It's cool to see her charge into a hord of darkspawn and shape shift into a Swarm or Bear and just go to town on them and then shape shift back and finish them off with her Spellsword.

The character I play tends to vary along certain lines:
When I play a male character as a warrior he usually ends up pretty high STR, with a secondary focus roughly split on DEX and CON. My male characters are usually the tanks: swords and shields, and heavy armor. Whenever I roll a female character as a warrior I always end up giving her only just enough STR for the gear I want her to use--typically a longsword and light-to-medium armor--and sink the rest of her attributes into DEX (the core game here irritates me, tho, because they go from mislabeled arming swords right to big massive zweihanders--which btw STILL wouldn't be as slow and unwieldy as the game makes them--with nothing in between). For whatever reason, I LOVE the concept of the ridiculously agile female warrior in RPGs. My female Planetouched (Asimiir) Weaponmaster in NWN2 ended the game with such INCREDIBLY high DEX that she almost never missed an attack, and her Parry skill was so high I could just turn it on and cruise through the really hard boss fights without taking a hit. :D
Not much variation between male and female when I play a Rogue. I generally split even focus on ranged (typically bow and arrow) and melee (once again, I prefer a proper 2H longsword) regardless of whether I play as male or female. It usually ends up on the front line firing with the bow and arrow until the enemy closes. I've had some characters (Baldur's Gate, especially) that had such high proficiency that he could 1-hit kill enemy after enemy, and take down 3-4 before they could even close to melee range (worked REALLY well teamed up with Imoen in Baldur's Gate, especially late in the game once a lot of high-level gear became available).
I rarely play a mage. Often the early phases of these game are STUPIDLY hard if you're a mage, because you've got maybe got one or two companions and get swarmed by five guys in heavy armor. I was also turned off by the D&D magic rules (thank GOD DAO jettisoned those!) and the way mages are largely hamstrung when it comes to their equipment. I really would want to play a TRUE multi-class like was possible in the Quest for Glory series (I miss QFG!).
-

It is even harder than normal when you have no energy to cast your spells until level 9 as a blood mage. It takes strict crowd control spells like sleep, cone of cold, and walking explosion. The complete repetition of playing a sword wielding character is nauseating.

Admittedly, I have not played another Bioware game. Perhaps thats my problem.
Being unfamiliar with their previous products, my first impressions, regarding the port feel, were that the map had to be limited to accomodate the limited capabilities of the consoles and that an aged graphic engine (no matter how "updated") had to be used for the same reason. While the map issue may be more their design style, I see no reason why a PC-only game would have opted for such a lackluster graphics engine.
:headscratch: You are high as a kite, free roaming as nothing to do with consoles. On the Xbox department, Fall Out 3, Test Drive Unlimited & Mercenary 2 are excellent examples of free roaming.
Ive not played two out of those three, but I did play Oblivian and, honestly, I hated the game. Could never understand why people were so smitten with it. Felt the same about Fallout 3.
Regardless, would not the memory and processing limitations of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, in comparison to an even mediocre PC rig, neccessitate the "watering down" of titles to make them compatible with both platforms?
Seems only a question of mathematics to me.

Great draw to this game is going to be its mod-ability once the community really gets rolling and figures things out ( there's no mesh exporters yet since the community needs to make their own due to some licensing issues). Still, there's some impressive stuff possible with the existing tools. Someone has already modded Morrigan's face so it's less blocky and more in-line with the generally more-preferred concept art:
And yes, he DOES have a version that retains her creepy golden eyes.
Another modder managed to extract Duncan's armor and make it equippable by the players as well.

Not trying to diss the game, so don't think that's my intention, as I've put well over 20 hours into it already. xD
But, it seems a helluva lot like Oblivion to me, and the control set-up I found rather... weird (whole left click/right click thing, auto-"combat mode"), but it's a fantastic game, especially after getting used to the controls. All in all, great game, another one BioWare has hit the mark on. ;)
In all honesty, IMO, BioWare and Bethesda are the 2 best single player game makers... ever. :D

I still wish there was another 1-2 party slots. It's absurdly frustrating to be constantly outnumbered 3 or even 4 to 1. If I wanted those odds I'd go play in Furball Lake....
On the other hand, they DID at least get rid of the more infuriating D&D rules from the Forgotten Realms game series (Baldur's Gate, NWN, etc.)

That is why I like my mage, he can handle 7 and even 8 to 1 odds without a scratch. Open up with blood magic, cast blizzard, decimate the few poor souls that emerge from the chaos with sleep and horror followed by a liberal dose of drain life and dark sustenance.
If I wanted those odds I'd go play in Furball Lake..
Not sure where you fly in AH, but generally, unless you're on the deck, outnumbered, or willingly let the enemy start at your 6 o'clock you'll rarely find anyone willing to engage you in a 1v1 situation.

there is a mod that gives you two extra party slots but their portraits don't show along with the rest of the party but they do show up in the character and inventory screens.
I also would have liked to have been able to at least have one more party member so I could bring along either another tank or an off-tank character. Use them to hold the mob in place while Morrigan just sits back and nukes everyone to death and with the hit points of the tanks and off-tanks, we'd be able to survive the friendly fire of Morrigan's nuke attacks.

Yeah, I know. However I believe there's also some potential game-breaking bugs with it, too.
One problem with combat is that unlike Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, there's no such thing as "choke points" in this game. No matter how narrow your position, enemies can just push right through you to mob your mages (which once you cast one spell, the ENTIRE horde is going to do everything possible to do just that. I once counted SIX of 8-9 enemies chasing Morrigan around the area oblivious to the tanks whacking them in the back) or encircle your party. It's like there's no flag that tells the AI: Character A is standing in position B, so Character C is unable to occupy that same space.
I think I already posted my Redcliffe example. I had myself, Alistair, Sten and Morrigan take a position on the narrow wooden bridge right below the mill. The bridge is LITERALLY three characters wide, and I had my three melee fighters standing shoulder to shoulder in the front with Morrigan at the rear providing fire support. It didn't matter. Enemies could just push through as if the three melee fighters didn't exist, even though my three melee fighters were pressed so closely together that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for a man-sized creature to slip through, much less one that has to contend with three armored fighters--one with a shield and two with 2H swords.
It's like they put so much thought into the strategic use of spells and talents, that they entirely forgot that a HUGE part of the strategy of combat in games like this is managing the terrain.

Is there a manual for Arcane Warrior unlock?...... I did the quest where you let the spirit out of the jewel and it did not unlock it. I gooffed it up or something.
Seems like Ive found a Manual for every other specialty unlock except for Arcane Warrior.
Dragonscales seem like the best armor so far.

You have to be a mage to make use of Arcane Warrior. And I've yet to see one of my party members be given a specialization point on a level up.

Yes, my character is a Mage. I was asking if anyone has found a Manual at one of the stores. I obviously can not find one. I have found Manuals for Shape Shifter and Spirt Healer... Which i dont need. Morrigan showed me shapshifter. and cant remember i think Wynne showed me Sipirt Healer or i bought the Manual that unlocks it.

AFAIK all you need to do is free the one spirit, who will teach you how. Have you earned a Specialization point yet?

Thanks i went back and re did that part of the quest. I had to have the spirit teach me before I put it on the alter....
Yes I have two specialization points. I unlocked and spent one on spirit healer and one on Arcane Warrior.
going to have to beef up the dexterity points a little tho.
I had the black smith make the two handed star sword. 18. damage does not do any good if you cant hit with it. LOL
