In case you hadn't heard, the mini series 'The Pacific' is starting on HBO in 2010. It is being done by Hanks and Spielberg, so I imagine it will be good like Band of Brothers was. There is a trailer out.

It is based on the book 'With The Old Breed' by E.B. Sledge and chronicles an enlisted Marine mortarman in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. I just finished it last night and it is really a good book. The suffering these guys went through is unbelievable. As one example he describes how it wasn't uncommon for a Marine to slide down a ridge or dive for cover, and land right on a rotten corpse with an explosion of maggots and putrid decomposition...then continue to live in those clothes for days on end.
