Title: Monitor Woes
Post by: Nutzoid on November 01, 2009, 03:04:47 PM
I've got a Samsung Syncmaster 931b that I've had for about 3 years. I have the problem that whenever I turn it on, it just sits there and flashes and will do that for several seconds, at least it did about 3 to 4 months ago. Now it takes upwards of several minutes before I can see the Log On screen. Once I'm able to get to that point, it seems to be fine. Yesterday, Saturday, it took about thirty minutes before I got a "steady", no flashing, screen so I could log in. Today I tried for about an hour, and it never quit flashing.

Any thoughts, help?

She's on her way out.

If you have a friend who is a competent electronics tech it could probably be repaired cheaply. Those symptoms point to failed or drying electrolytic capacitors. I have repaired a number of them at work, with the cost for materials running under $5.

For the sake of not starting a new topic, I have a "brand new" (read: sat around for years in its box and wrappings) CRT monitor that will go dark every couple hours or so. It flashes at about half-brightness for just long enough that I can see it and will sometimes make that weird little noise (might be the noise an EMP would make) that happens when you first turn a monitor one. Rather curious as to what it's up to.

Well I just picked up a Samsung SyncMaster p2350 23" for 200$ at Sams Club.
I have to say I am totally thrilled with it.

Going to a bigger screen just makes everything in AH easier.

That little popping noise is the auto-degausser (demagnetizer) going off. Every "newer" CRT had it built in. I had a 20 inch Sony that did the same thing as you describe and it wasn't the power management on my system causing it. Checked the video card, cables, outlet, everything...then ended up tossing the monitor since it would have cost more to fix than buying a new LCD.

No, it's not the degaussing ring. It's the "swish" sound that comes with the screen energizing. It usually comes slightly after the pop and buzz of the degausser when the monitor first starts cold.

Oh yeah, I remember that noise. I wouldn't even pay to have it put on a repair bench...just not worth it.

I wouldn't either, but I live in a town of electricians. :D They don't necessarily understand the circuitry, but they know how to not kill themselves...which is generally more than me. :lol
