Title: System Restore in Vista
Post by: HellFire on November 04, 2009, 01:59:49 PM
Greetings:  In my endeavors to make my system work better I tried to restore my system to a created point a week ago, in the past System Restore worked seamlessly w/no problems, however lately my Sys.Restore claims there's an :
"Unspecified error & NO files nor any changes made!"

Tried Microsoft for assistance, google & yahoo searches for "How to Restore System
Restore in Vista" with no success.  :(  Tried turning Sys.Restore off & then back on  again ...  still no positive results!  Can anyone help me??  Thank you.

First off start windows in SAFE MODE and try to restore again (not sure what turning restore on and off did for you).

If that doesnt work then check to see if the wininit.ini file is in the Windows directory and if so rename it to Wininit.OLD and try it.  :aok

I think you are better off using True Image though.  :old:

Based on my understanding of the software, System Restore can create more nightmares than it can fix. Consider this error a blessing that it avoided a potential problem.

Greetings Chalenge & Denholm   :salute

Thx much for ur advice ... tried everything on the System Restore, however, the problem's still domiciled on my PC   :furious

One (1) bad noticeable result for attempting to fix "System Restore" is that now every time I switch on my PC.... I get the following pain in the arse error message:

"Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one (1) minute.
Pls save ur work."

This latest error then LOGS ME OFF & restarts with the same error msg with similar results in a continuous loop, going round & round.   Infrequently it'll log me on without the error msg, this is one (1) of the times, thusly giving me a chance to voice my grievances & ask for assistance, pls help me to get rid of this error.

Thx for ur help, folks  :)

It sounds like a misbehaving ActiveX control. Next time start up in Safe Mode and then start internet explorer and access the tools menu where you will find a 'manage addons' option. In the list that comes up (somewhere) will be listed the problem control. It may be a banking control or online shopping type control its hard to say but if you can think of what it was you last added about the time this problem started you will probably hit the right one to be removed. At least I hope thats all it is.

it could be, but I thought it could have been a type of virus. I would just try wiping the memory, to reset all settings back to default and when you do so, this gives you a clean slate.

Have you updated drivers lately?  Sounds something like a problem I had last year caused by an ATI video program update. Dumped the ATI program and installed ATI Tray Tools.
