Title: A&P's
Post by: skidoo33 on November 05, 2009, 03:03:32 PM
I fairly new to the game and the forums,  but I wanted to see how many other a&p mechanics there are here, or any other airmen in general.
I've been an a&p since 2003, and worked mostly on helicopters and small single engine planes.  I have worked on Bell 206b3 and 214b1, aerospatiale llama sa315 and many small cessnas and pipers.
I was layed off and for the past year or so I haven't been able to find a decent job that would allow me to stay in the same part of the state(Montana), but I guess given the type of industry it requires a guy to travel to find work.
So, what's your story?

Do not come to Wichita, Kansas.  We have four big aviation and a few small aviation companies.  All together and i think 30-40 thousand people lost their job in the past year.

I'm retired and the last 4 years I was working was in aviation maintenance. I got my A&P for my last "career" while waiting for the wife to retire. I have no clues to give you other than to start looking everywhere. Most of the manufacturing plants like Cessna don't use A&P's for their operations other than a few positions and not in the main assembly areas. The airlines already have a surplus as far as I know with many of their previous mechanics laid off too. I'd start looking at some of the major small aircraft centers at airports since you have GA experience. Check and see if there are any independent IA's looking for mechanics as well to get you by for the short term.

i've got a bunch of places in northern Cali that are busy as hell if you want that. The head of maint is a close friend and I fly him out to NY to do my annuals. Palo alto, Hayward area would be the main areas of activity.
