I've been using L-View Pro since about '94.  It's gone through quite a few changes, but was still a good product the last time I downloaded it in 2006.  I don't know about free though.  It's cheap.  Maybe there's a trial.

Yes, gimp is free.

I love Paint Shop Pro X.  About $45 bucks, but far less learning curve than Photoshop with just as many features.  It leaves gimp in the dust.

It'll probably be in the 'save as' options.

However, you should read the manual - it'll have far more answers than we can provide! :)

Im pretty sure to make the animated kind with gimp just make each of the individual slides as its own layer, then save it as a gif. I think it will then ask you if you want to make this an animation.

OK, just tried that, but I can't put a picture in the new layer.

you may have to install a script to do that.  they have some great scripts to add on to GIMP.  it's a bit of a hassle, but they make it readilly expandable for most needs.

aside from the windowed interface, which makes me nuts, it's a great program.
