Title: PC Hades!
Post by: 5PointOh on November 09, 2009, 01:11:08 AM
Sooooo,

My virus protection ended on my PC at the beginning of the month.  I really didn't think much of it.  I typically do not travel off the beaten path of websites that are quality web pages.

I was looking for some new paint brushes for photoshop for a skinning project I have in mind.  So I google for some photoshop paint brush sites.  I found one (and I wish I could remember the dang name 1001 Brushes or some crap like that) that seemed interesting.  I venture in and find a brush set that seemed ideal for making scratches for my skins.

I click the little download button and boom its finished.  I close out IE8, and remember I wanted to check out the forums.  I click on the "E" and receive an error message, that I have never had before.  Ok, now I can't log on to the net :headscratch:.  So I swing my chair around and fire up my old pc.  I find a trial virus program that I can save to a jump drive and and throw on my XPS. Accomplish that, except naturally, the trial software wants to register on line.   Now I am starting to become peeved. Which typically takes a lot for me.

Ok, usually don't like to do this, but lets try a system restore.  What! All my restore points are gone too. Now I am livid, a) at myself and b) that I have some nasty virus that's preventing for reading the B-29 wish in the Wishlist forums. Ok, lets try safemode.  No good.

Now, I am lost.  I do not know where the virus hid itself, or even a guess. Let's try installing IE8. Access denied. Hmmm I am the admin on my PC, yet I am denied.  <Insert obscenities> How about a manual delete of the files.  I was thinking since the only thing effect was internet explore, maybe a re install would work. Negative Ghost rider, your PC is FUBAR.

So I restart for about the 20th time and tap the F8.  "Re image to factory Dell Setting", wow this is a road I do not want to travel. Ah what the heck. An hour later back up and running.  Well sort of...72 Windows updates to reinstall, along with AH, and of course the skuzzards Vista diet.

Ah, I feel better just needed to vent.

Anyone know a good anti virus software.  I prefer not to go back to McAfee.

Threatfire

Not typical AV scanner, instead it watch's for the kinds of things Virus's do.
Rootkit's, Registry changes, etc.

Basicly catch's them before they can really get started.

Also, lose IE8, get firefox 3.5

No it won't...not without the proper add-ons...no script...DOT...etc...even then it won't stop you from downloading a virus infected file.

5PointOh...once you have restored your system...completely remove the factory anti-virus and all the extra crap Dell puts on there...install Avira Antivir...then get DOT (domain of trust), it's a plugin for IE and Firefox that uses an online database to show you good vs bad websites...

Thanks for the tips guys, everything back up and semi normal.  Getting a couple of little stutters in AH, might be from all of the skins downloading again.

Thanks again
