The zip format is not the problem at least for me, it is the program you are using to create the document since I don't use that program I am unable to open the document except in machine lan which is of course unusable.

<shrug> I couldn't care less if someone with word 97 can read them, I don't have that program and I cannot read the assignment, simple as that.

I guess you could use note pad since everyone with windoz has that?

Do you need me to proof read the orders?  Make sure the routes, times, aircraft, ords and altitudes are in tip top shape.  I wouldn't want anybody thinking they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I'm just a good samritan humbly making my way through the world.

TUk just to let you know, I won't be preparing the Allied Orders.  I told the squad last week that "first to die" got the job.  I have never seen such assiduous flying!  They all landed safely but Picko wiped his wheels off landing and that's good enough for me!

Tuk, my orders have me confused.  I thought if I helped out with yours then you could help with mine.  Here's my problem.

We have been assigned bomber duty.  That's not the problem.  I love being able to fly B-52C's.  Nothing wrong with the C models.  We'll be able to cruise at 45,000 ft at 550 miles an hour.

It's just that our escorts are flying Sopwith Camels.  I'm afraid that during takeoff they will accidentally be blown back into last week from the jet wash.  They'll be late to the party.

If you could, tell your guys to please be patient.  The Camel jockeys will be there just behind on schedule.  I think I remember the Quartermaster saying something about the rifle ammunition being late again.  Don't be surprised if arrows and spears are being hurled at your guys.

Any suggestions are welcome in finding asolution to this dilemna.

What part of the statement " the zipping was not my problem" didn't you understand????  When I got the orders unzipped I could not OPEN the document because I don't use MSWORD, and 50,000 guys that do use msword saying they got their orders just fine doesn't change jack for me

It never ceases to amaze me why people complain when they are in a minorty instead of fixing the problem themselves. Instead of complaining about not being able to open the document, you could have found something that would. Start here: http://openoffice.idownload.org/?gclid=CIXuspLphZ4CFVw55QodT1hApQ (http://openoffice.idownload.org/?gclid=CIXuspLphZ4CFVw55QodT1hApQ). You will find a word processing program that will handle MS Word.

To CiC's; The same program will convert WORD documents to a PDF format for which the application to open it is easily found.

I don't use MSWORD either.  I use open office.

Next month any objectives I send out will be in MS Word so if anyone can't open them they need to get that taken care of.

Did not know OO would convert to PDF! Cool feature! :)

It does raise a good point.

.pdf or .rtf (rich text format) or even Notepad with a .jpg, are all universally accessible formats.

My preference would be .rtf or .pdf versions, both universal formats supported by most applications, as included backup to all orders.

And if you really get messed up and find yourself with something you can't ready you can always use this little link.

http://media-convert.com/ (http://media-convert.com/)

I've used it many many times to convert from OO to Word and back and forth for friends.  I've even used it to convert flash, wmv, mov, pretty much anything and it's free.  If they're really busy it'll be queued for a little while or you can select to have them e-mail you with a download link when the file is ready.

Well I appreceiate all you have done for FSO, but this statement is tandamount to saying to all us guys that don't use MSWORD "it's my way or the highway", while PDF is free and used by almost everyone.

I guess "it's good to be the king"

Just wonder where you get your numbers to say that MS WORD users are in the majority?  Thanks for the link, I will check it out and for future reference it would have been just as easy to provide it sans the insults :rock

Oh that is nothing new. Just been doing it that way since 2001. :) In all those years  :old: never had to convert them before. ;) Then again my objectives have always been lack luster. Nothing fancy or as cool as the other Admin CM's put out. Have always admired their talent in that area.

Having said that, now that I know Open Office can convert them to a PDF I 'might' try that. :)

Sorry fellas, but the only reason not to have any word processing program and or pdf converter application on your system is if it's used only for gaming and nothing else...but then even hard core gamers need both types of applications if they are active in online multiplayer games.

The .doc format has been the most used document format since WordPerfect went under...12+ years ago and there are plenty of freeware programs that will allow you to at least open a .doc file without needing Microsoft Office installed. There are also many many great freeware applications that allow you to turn almost any document file into a pdf file.

That is also true for zip archiving programs that can create/open .rar files...another type of application that most especially gamers should have on their systems.

Open Office rocks! Played with it since Sunday (have before but never in depth) for several hours. Converts to PDF so easily. Love it! :)
Already made up the objectives and converted all three frames to a PDF file.  :D
