Title: F4U-1A vs. Typhoon 1B
Post by: Getback on November 12, 2009, 01:50:38 AM
Was surprised recently that I ran down 2 Typhoons on the deck this past week in an F4U-1A. I looked at the plane vs plane charts and to my surprise the F4U-1a is faster above 5k while the Typhoon is faster on the deck but, not by much. In both cases we did a couple of turns and the Typhoon then tried to run. So it must be that the f4 accelerates a little faster or the Typhoon had rocket rails or maybe nobs from dropping eggs. Not sure on the latter.

I'm also starting to think the initial turn of the typhoon is a bit better than the f4u-1a. Both times the Typhoon got inside of my turn initially but couldn't hold it. Now that may be because of an e advantage on my part. Not sure.

I just found it interesting and thought I would bring it up for further consideration.

You can make a hundred such notes on every aircraft type in the game but you will have to fly the plane frequently for it to become second nature to you in combat. There will be times when you fight a great fight against someone that just doesnt understand 'the rules' and you will make it look like you killed them with ease. Enjoy it when it happens because there will also be times when even though you follow the rules a random shot will come from an unlikely angle and hit something vital or the other fellow knows the rules also and just quite simply gets there first.  :old:

Actually the Typhoon is faster up to ~12k. If the Typhoon driver is trying to run from a F4U-1A, he should try to get the race to about 2k. That's the altitude where the F4U-1A has it's weakest WEP performance, the Typhoon is actually faster in military power than the -1A in WEP.

But of course, the intitial E situation can be as such that the Typhoon may be unable to play this advantage

I rarely can catch Typhoons, surprised the 1A has a speed edge at any altitude.  I do find the Typh can hold it's own in high speed turning with the 1A.  I was very surprised by that the first time.  I'm much more careful with them now.

Yah, me too.  That's a nice hunk of iron.

F4U1-A is one of the best energy-retention aircraft in the whole set.  If you've built up some speed, you can run down anything with it (except for 262/163).
