One of my friends at school is a PFC. in the National Guard. He went through Basic Combat Training over the summer and goes to AIT this coming summer. But i find it strange that the Guard is 'giving' him his high school diploma now, The entire 29th Infantry Division is deploying to Kuwait then Iraq tomorrow, including him. I thought that by law he had to graduate with a diploma and be 18 years old? He assumes he is going to be Infantry over there cause he hasnt been to MOS school yet.

He must be 18 then, lots of seniors are that age, it just depends on when you turn 18 , some turn during summer and some right at the beginning of the school year, If he's going good luck and Godspeed to him <S>

i asked him, he is 17, he doesnt turn 18 til april and his deployment will almost be over, What really surprises me is that they just gave him his diploma

That's a really short deployment, even for a Guard Unit. Something sounds fishy to me, but what do I know.

Your parents have to sign a waver if you are under 18 to join the National Guard. I'm not sure about the deploying part since he's still in High school, you would think they would hold him until he finishes school.
-
There is no way he will deploy without a MOS.
11 Boo is STILL a MOS.
-
if you're 17 and not 18, they'll send you back to the state. (if they find that out)

BINGO!!
the funniest part of the story is they "handed" him his diploma......... ROFL
the National Guard .... or any branch of the military for that matter CANNOT give you a diploma......
if he hasnt graduated high school then he has to get a GED from a STATE by taking a test.......... not having a diploma or GED would not prevent you from deploying anyway...... so why (if it were possible, which its not) would they bother giving him a diploma?

UPDATE: in my embarrassment (and going to be 300 plus people on monday) his girlfriend informed me that he is just going to weekend drill. and that its a big spoof. :o
People at school were shaking his hand saying how proud they were of him and people said they were going to build him carepackages this weekend

LoL... The guy was probably using his story to try and score some sympathy "I may never see you again" tail... Didn't think far enough ahead to realize that he would get busted when he didn't actually leave for a year.

He best hope that story doesn't make it back to his Drill Sgt.

Friend of mine's kid did the 'early Guard' thing--his boot was to be split over the summers after 10th and 11th grade--but had a minor hernia during initial...messed all that up. At any rate, he's a Rat at VMI now, and pop is quite proud

Someone should drop a call to his First Sgt. Then see what stories he comes back with.

I was 17 when I enlisted in the Guard. I did the split op program where you got to Basic the summer between your Jr and Sr year. Before you even go to basic you have to have your MOS picked out. You can't get deployed until you have graduated and finished AIT he is messing with you.
